A UNIVERSITY accommodation block has been hit by an outbreak of scabies.

It is believed that five students at Warsash Maritime Academy have been confirmed to have contracted the skin infection, which leaves victims with an itchy rash.

The academy, part of Southampton Solent University, is home to around 240 students with more than 1,000 more coming onto the campus each day.

Out of the three accommodation blocks - Shackleton, Blyth and Hamblemead - Shackleton, which houses about 140 students, is said to have been the worst affected.

The college is one of the top institutions in the country for education, training, consultancy and research into the international shipping and off-shore oil industries.

Many of the students have now returned to their home towns for a two-week Easter break sparking fears that the disease could be spread far and wide. One student, who asked not to be named, said: "So far five people have been diagnosed with scabies, but who knows how many more are carrying it.

"Everyone is in close contact with everyone else here so it could have spread.

"We broke up on Friday and everyone goes back home.

"We're all really concerned about the infection. I hate to think how far the infection could be spread." David Purdue, accommodation manager at Warsash Maritime Academy, declined to comment.

A spokeswoman for Southampton Solent University said notices have been put up in the accommodation blocks at Warsash to make sure students were aware of the situation and to advise them of possible symptoms, and when to seek advice from a GP.

"We are currently aware of five confirmed cases of scabies at Warsash," she said.

"We are liaising closely with the Health Protection Agency regarding advice and treatment.

"Students are being informed as a precaution. As always, the health and safety of our students is paramount."

I'm off to university in September, and my housemates will love me.
Everything has to be clean.
Clean clean clean.
The kitchen in our halls of residence will never have had it so good.

I believe you mean "Bags o' shyte!" The "s" on the end of "Students" suggests it's plural.

I don't get why people are slaging off students! It is a fairly common condition which is picked up easily! It is often found in close living conditions such as halls and residential nursing homes! It's not these people's fault!

DC the College of Higher Education became the Polytechnic and then became the Solent University.

Standards dropped during the past 25 years.

You may think you are University material son but you don't come close.

Before that it was Southampton College of Technology. Fancy titles don't impress anyone, do they? So why do they bother changing the names of places.

The Warsash branch was called the "School of Navigation, Warsash" in the sixties and seventies (or to give it its full title at that time, "Southampton University School of Navigation".)

they dont dodge tax, just dont earn enugh to pay it YET, people go to university so they can get the job that they want and most probably a high paying job, so eventually pay alot more tax than some people, plus its not like we are using the tax payers money because we pay back the money we owe !!!

It's depressing reading the comments from a number of the ignorant contributors to this news page. By the way, an engineering course at Solent University has the same curriculum as Oxford.

Oh dear, you're obviously not familiar with the comedic works of Steve Coogan.

You've embarrassed yourself there, I'm afraid.

I am a senior engineering cadet at Warsash Maritime Academy (WMA) and have lived both on and off campus, and therefore consider myself qualified to make the following points.

In reply to various comments from various people I would like to say the following:

1. Warsash is a district of Southampton, not Portsmouth, hence the postcode being SO31, therefore Skates and other such nicknames/pseudonyms have nothing to do with anything, never mind the fact that the students at WMA come from all corners of the UK, and indeed the world.

2. We may not have to pay tax, but the job we do is one of the most dangerous around, not counting the armed forces, whom I give the utmost respect to for fighting to protect the rights and lives of the people of the Free World, and without the Merchant Navy, the ignorant people of this world would not have their foreign produced goods, i.e most of their foodstuffs, their fancy Chinese produced clothes, their Playstations and most other electrical goods, infact, most things!

3. Warsash Maritime Academy, formerly Warsash Maritime College, School of Navigation etc, only became affiliated with Southampton Solent University as of mid 2006, in order to be able to award the degree which is available at the end of the then new B.Eng Hons and Bsc Hons courses, and there the association ends!

4. I feel special comment is necessary for
"cynic, isolation ward tatchbury " due to his extreme ignorance, and professing to know what life is like at sea, having been what seems, with no disrespect intended to those others who do their jobs well, a non-important and replacable member of the hotel services department, with no professional qualification relevant to WMA, onboard a cruise liner, not a hardworking, professional, UK qualified Deck or Engineer Officer who is the product of a WMA education, and with a UK ticket are the most respected in the world in the field. There are a majority of British cadets at Warsash, followed close is second by Nigerians, with a significant number of Bruneians, and various other nationalities in a slight minority. Filipinos, from my experience at WMA, do not come into the equation, although most make very reputable, able and suitably qualified seafarers.

5. The phrase "Hello Sailor " is one commonly associated with the Royal Navy, not with the Merchant Navy, for which WMA caters. No disrespect to our fellow mariners of the RN whatsoever.

I feel I have made 5 points here which the idiots who have been posting on this website could do with reading, as their knowledge on the various subjects, with limited exception and judging the opinions they have voiced, is non-existant. I am also well aware that these points have nothing to do with the Scabies issue, but having read the previous comments I felt it necessary to comment.
