IT is the cheeky, head-turning protest that has a serious message.
Sporting nothing but their birthday suits and helmets, scores of people will take to the streets of Southampton on two wheels for this year's Naked Bike Ride.
The bold and brazen protestors will set out in the buff from Southampton Common on a tour of the city to encourage people to dump the car and go green.
Now in its second year, organisers are hoping this year's event - on June 6 - will attract even more riders than the 102 that turned up last year.
Organiser Thea Bjaarland, who stripped off in public for the first time at last year's event, said: "The Naked Bike Ride is a peaceful, imaginative and fun protest against oil dependency and car culture.
"It's a celebration of the bicycle and also a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body.
"It is also a symbol of the vulnerability of the cyclist in traffic.
"The message to people is come as bare as you dare.
"Nudity makes a great statement, and many of us will be completely naked, but if you're more comfortable in a little clothing, that's fine too.
"In previous years, riders have worn shorts, bras, swimwear, body paint, wigs and sunglasses.
"Body painting and adornment, customised bikes and other creative expression are all strongly encouraged."
The cyclists will take a route that passes through Portswood and tours the city centre before returning to Southampton Common via The Avenue.
The event is part of World Naked Bike Ride, which has grown in popularity since its inception in 2004.

I am not in any way criticising this event, good on'em! I wish I had the guts...! Or perhaps it is my guts that stop me! However can someone tell me why it appears perfectly acceptable for hundreds of people to cycle round a public council owned park, presumably officially sanctioned, in the nude, whereas Steve Gough from Eastleigh was constantly persecuted by the police for walking in the nude, but on his own?

Absolutely disgusting, this is blatant indecent exposure hiding behind the usual bogus "issue" of the "environment". These people should be arrested immediately and fined. It won't happen of course, the filth are probably too busy persecuting car drivers (as ever) - something both they and these flashers seem VERY happy doing.

i totally agree with them about dumping the cars and all of us riding a bike, but why naked? i dont see where that fits in with the big picture? if we lived in a nice hot country, then i would say yes, but i cant see it in the winter time, can you? in an idea world we should be naked but thank adam and eve and all the perverts out there, that it will never happen. i personally have nothing against any one being naked but i dont want to see naked fat bums riding down the road first thing in the morning, sorry folks

It's Christianity that introduced this idea that we should be ashamed of nudity (see Genesis for the full story). I however, have no shame, and shall proudly be riding my bicycle sans clothing to demonstrate my support for a greener Britain.
What a desperate state we have allowed ourselves to be in. Don't we have any pride in ourselves anymore.Just how much lower can our standards drop.Who ever sanctioned this naked ride to take place should be sacked. I'm certainly not proud to be British. Whats the point of a police force if this kind of thing is allowed to go ahead. But beware it's certainly a sign of the times it would be good if you would all take the time to read St. Matthew 24 in the Bible to see that soon we will all be judged by the wrath of God, and there's no compromise on His judgement.

I don't think there was any trouble of that nature (there are videos on You Tube, check them out). Everyone seems pretty friendly, if not a little bit nutty, loud and determined to enjoy themselves :D
soory but im not confusing nudity with perversion, its man that has done that, you are going to get every perv jumping out of the bushes and grabbing these people off their bikes, or flashing, go on the common and see all the flashers up there in the bushes on a weekend, or read the echo and see how many people have been grabbed up there. common sense prevails here. if you want to be nude then go to a nudist park, there is a time and a place. being nude will cause more problems and then watch the sparks fly. the poor police have enough on their plates without having to chase pervs who go after the naked cyclist.i wish we could all walk around naked and let our bits hang loose in the wind, but get real

But I do think people in this country generally are often too hung up on nudity and body image - so that's the issue I'm riding for tomorrow. To be honest, though, the main reason I'm taking part is simply that I expect it to be a lot of fun!
I agree with the issue and would want to join them in the bike ride and i think many others would if it wasnt as much preasure for it to be a naked bike ride. good on those though with the guts! :D
