Introducing new Saints head coach Jan Poortvliet

8:00am Friday 30th May 2008

Jan Poortvliet is steeped in Dutch football history.

Born on September 21, 1955, in Zeeland, a province to the west of the Netherlands, he grew up at PSV Eindhoven.

He was part of the successful PSV side that won a clutch of honours during his 12 seasons up to 1983.

Poortvliet, who racked up 420 domestic appearances and 57 European matches for PSV, picked up no less than three Dutch league Eredivisie winners medals, two domestic cups and most notably a UEFA Cup winners medal after playing SC Bastia of France over two legs in the 1978 final.

After leaving PSV, Poortvliet went on to have a six-month stint at Roda JC before three years in France with Nimes Olympique.

Poortvliet went on to have spells in Belgian football with Royal Antwerp and Eendracht Aalst, punctuated by another stint in France with Cannes.

But it is on the international stage that Poortvliet achieved his arguably greatest success as a player.

He was capped 25 times for his country, most memorably winning six of those in the 1978 World Cup.

He only made his senior international debut in Holland's last warm-up friendly before the tournament.

He didn't feature in the first game but appeared in every game thereafter as his country reached their second successive World Cup final.

Poortvliet played the whole 90 minutes, plus extra time, in the final wearing the number two jersey.

His side lost out 3-1 to the Mario Kempes-inspired hosts after the scores had finished 1-1 at the end of full time.

As a player, Poortvliet was part of the total football Dutch team, coming into the side right at the end of Johan Cruyff's spell in international level.

After hanging up his boots, Poortvliet headed into coaching where he has an impressive record.

He has built a reputation for forging promotion-winning teams on a limited budget by playing and developing the club's young players - something that must have appealed to Saints.

Poortvliet landed his first coaching job in Belgium with Eendracht Aalst where he stayed for two seasons, leading them to consecutive play-offs.

In 1994 he started three years at Brabantia in Holland where he guided them twice to the fourth division title, winning promotion once, before two years at de Valk where he again won the title.

Back in Belgium in 1999 with Overpelt, he won them promotion from the second division in his first season and guided them to 11th in the top flight the next campaign before joining Den Bosch in Holland.

There he took over with the club in administration but led them immediately to the first division title and promotion to the Eredivisie.

Then came a three season stint with Telstar, where Poortvliet built a team on a tiny budget using youngsters that gradually improved to the point where they reached the play-offs.

Two seasons at Nuenen followed with an immediate fifth division championship and then third place in the fourth division which guaranteed a play-off.

Last summer Poortvliet tried a fresh challenge with Helmand Sports, another club in the mould of those he had previously managed and the one he shortly will - one with limited money looking for promotion from the country's second tier of football using young players.

He guided them straight into the play-offs but they lost out in the second round of the three-round knock-out competition for promotion.

Helmand didn't want to let Poortvliet leave but agreed to give him the chance to move to Saints.

He has paid his own severance fee to Helmand in order to move to England.

Helmand ?

We need a football manager, not someone who's been fighting in Afghanistan...

Introducing Rupert Lowe's yes man, Jan Poortvliet.

Because that's all he is. Someone who Lowe can manipulate.

It will be Rupert Lowe picking the team next season. These two dutch chumps are just window dressing.

Lowe is out of control and Wilde is just a big a disgrace.

Saint Ash, At work says...

Feel a bit dissapointed that NP wasn't given a chance to carry on the good work from last season, I think he played a major role in securing the club's championship status.
As always being a Saint's fan, nothing is ever easy or straight forward, and by looking in to the persons past, he seems to have a very wide ranging and compident CV.Taking club's with limited fund's forward using younger players, organising his team by playing football on the floor, the "Dutch way".I think with our excellent youth set up he could well be a blessing in disguise.Don't like to say it, but has Wupert pulled one out of the fire?
Regardless,if he's our new manager, as Saint's fan's we WILL get behind him and HIS team.

"Regardless,if he's our new manager, as Saint's fan's we WILL get behind him and HIS team."

Speak for yourself sunshine. It's Lowes team now, nothing to do with the Dutch blokes.

Their track record is rubbish. Never coached above Dutch league 2, which is rubbish.

Teams that try to play football in the physical Championship, tend to end up in League One.

I like to see kids given a chance, but with no clear boss in charge of the team, I predict the players will be confused by this set up and it will be an almighty failure.

This kind of set up has NEVER worked in Championship football. It won't work now.

Why come on here to post this pathetic little post? Surely your PR company pays you to be a little more enthusiastic about your client's decision.

Or does the fact that Lowe is back in power mean that you are winding down your efforts cos the main job of getting the dictator back in power has been achieved?

So now it's official we are now just a feeder club, to develop youngsters which we know the two bell ends in charge will just sell at the earliest convenience to swell their own coffers.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the training ground sold for development after all wilde is a property developer isnt he? perhaps that was the attraction for rupert to get into bed with him, as I can see no way that this partnership is for the good of our club.

PLEASE LEAVE US IN PEACE YOU ARE BOTH LOSERS AND ALWAYS WILL BE.

Looks like my hunch yesterday was correct... i knew the manager situation was being kept hush hush.

The only issue I have with this guy, is that he has managed more clubs than Anelka has played for!.... So it feels like a short termist appointment.

But hey, thets see how it goes!

Oh I’m lovin this. Lowe makes what could prove to be a very astute appointment and the anti-Lowe brigade post their usual brainless, bigoted views. They are dreading being proved wrong.

Picture the scene, final game of the season and Saints achieve automatic promotion. The usual anti Lowe mob start posting……….”SFC promotion is nothing more than a money making ploy by Rupert” or “Typical, Lowe comes back and now we will have to pay more for our season tickets, Lowe out!” or “ Lowe out, this promotion will mean it will take longer to get to and from the ground when we play the likes of Man U an Chelsea” or “Lowes shares have now doubled proving he only came back to get us promotion so he could make money, Lowe out!”

Some 'fans' do have sort memories.

Mr Dave, Edinburgh says...
9:52am Fri 30 May 08

It's a new month, which means Saints have a new manager. Our 482nd since January 1996 I think. Given the laziness of newspaper editors, what's the reckoning that every saints win will have been because we "went Dutch", every loss means that we now need "Dutch Courage", and when he's invariable sacked - probably next month - it's because we've "passed the Dutchy on the left hand side".

Still, want to say good luck to him. Hope the fans give him a bit of a chance. I want Saints to do well, win the Championship and regain our rightful place. In order to do this the manager needs to be good, and have the backing of us, and hopefully he's the man.

If you throw a dart blindly at a dartboard you will eventually hit the bull, so hopefully the law of averages mean that Roops might have chosen someone worthy for once.

When you pass Leeds through the trapdoor next season remember to wave goodbye!!!

SFC4EVA - you can say look where that got us when he did not bring hoddle back but that does not mean anything would of been different if he did come back.what makes me laugh is that when anyone has an opinion (like me) and another person does not agree with it they automatically think that that person is not a "real fan" well i am a real fan and am a season ticket holder and even if i didn't and i was a arm chair fan does that mean that im less passionate about my club? any people saying this is good for saints has to be blind and ignorant.how many times has something like this happened in the championship? a unknown dutch manager and surprise surprise a chairman with a great radical new idea that just so happens to be a cheap option, what a load of rubbish and just another gamble that lowe has taken against the fans wishes.why can't he just be a normal chairman a not a ponce who thinks he knows bloody everything!

You must still believe in fairy tales if you really believe Lowe did what the fans wanted, in not re-appointing Hoddle.
Lowe does what Lowe wants, irrespective of what the fans say or want, end of.
Saying it was the fans fault he didn't re-appoint Hoddle is pure spite to deflect the responsibility away from himself.
With regards to the new 'Coach"? WHO???
I'd like to hear what Lowe & Wilde have to say to justify the appointment of a man who'se experience of coaching teams, seems to be with clubs on a par with non-league football in the UK.
It's ok to quote statistics about him leading a team to the top of Div 4 in Holland, but where does that equate in terms of comparison to the CCC league?
How many levels below the CCC league is it?
Even getting into the top league with a team in Belgium raises doubts over the man's ability to work with full time professional footballers, as against (I assume) the semi-pro footballers he was working with in the past.
It may still be football but he is moving to a totally new ball game, by coming to SFC.
As a Saints fan I always want success for the team, but as someone who feels Lowe is not the right man to head a football club, this could be the moment when Lowe commits professional suicide.

So he's a failed Dutch coach who had no success with the youngsters of his previous club and who are "sorry to let hom go" football speak for he's a nice guy and we all love him but thank goodness he's gone.I wish him well but I fear he's on a loser with the interfering Lowe in charge. He will have no room to move or make decisions.I reckon they should have given Lowe the job then we could have sack hom after 14 games and we could wish him well to which club he decides to go to and good riddence to him.Sack Wilde he's a drain on the clubs finance and use his money for players. After all he's servrd his purpose by getting Lowe reelected Lowe he doesn't need him anymore. Just a wonderful dream.Watch this space

Ignore the record mate, as it is misleading. If you actually went to the games and saw the difference in the players self-belief and commitment between before when Pearson took over (Plymouth beating us 2-0 at St Marys) and end of season (1-1 W.Brom, 3-2 Sheff.U), this is why most saints fans are disgusted that Lowe has done this, considering he wasn't around to see the changes. Pearson will become a very good manager given 12 months. These dutch nobodies will not even be at St.Mary's, I guarantee it...

A few things I would like to say.
1. I am sorry to see NP leave the club, I think he is a great manager and a player motivator.
2. We as fans have no say in the day to day running of the club.
3. I will support the appointment of the new coaches as I will always support the team.
4.If you read between the lines the next thing to go will be dead wood players, which in fairness all of us supporters have been asking for.
5. The youth players will step up to the senior team, again most supporters have been calling for this all season.
6. I believe this coach has big ambitions, who else would pay there own release fee? Now there are obvious benefits to him for doing this, is it a stepping stone to succeed with saints and be noticed by the big guns or has he seen the potential of the youth players? Iam not sure but results will tell.
7. The two chairmen who iam not a supporter of, have in fact done what the fans wanted. They have appointed a coach well before the start of the season, Iam led to believe that player announcements will be made next week. So in fairness by next week the fans will know exactly where we stand.
I would like to point out that I am a saints fan and not a spin doctor like some. I have sat down and tried to get around all this before doing this post,
COYR SAINTS FOREVER

This reliance on youth is nothing but lambs to the slaughter. If it was such a good move, why don't other clubs do it? By all means 1 or 2 at a time fine, but as a backbone, not a chance.
Pearson achieved a great deal for this club, those of you who criticise his record have clearly not being going to St.Mary's.

Saint, says...
10:51am Fri 30 May 08

Rupert Lowe is consitent on changing manangers so often. Dose any other club have a better record than him now?

This is a almighty gamble! You can not solely play youth no matter how cheap it comes! I really hope it pays off, though I really can not see it. At this moment in time we look like we are looking at ten years plus in this league, and that is not good enough. What was wrong with NP, and please why are the board and especially Turn coat Wilde point to nothing but wages. When it suits they keep info like this to themself, but when they want to justifie themselfs. They put it out for the public, so if things go wrong. They have a ready made excuse to hand.

This board so far is taking every opportunity to blame the previous board for everything, and that is so easy. They are very much to blame for this too. I would say NP lost his job solely for this board to stick two fingers up at the old board, and wipe anything they might be able to claim credit for. This behaivour is so sad!

We may look back in time and see how we let a up and coming manager slip through our hands!

Yorkie, Pocklington says...
10:51am Fri 30 May 08

This is the biggest job of his career.

Not only does he have to appease some 20,000 regulars at SMS, he will need to deal with the press, Michael Wilde, Rupert Lowe - and then there's a small issue of winning games and palying attractive football.

The beautiful game...using British youngsters from our own Academy. Personally I don't think it will work - but I live to be proved wrong!

How will us fans measure success? Last year it was surviving - what about this year?

I go to a game to see commitment, aggression, goals and decent football - so why do I follow SFC? Many of those qualities were missing for nearly the whole season last year - I don't believe it can get any worse...

I don't really care who runs the club, or who mamages the team...but the internet makes it bloody difficult not to get embroiled in the whole debate.

Promotion back to the Premiership just seems further away than ever!

The more I read about this chap Jan Poortvliet though I feel we could have done worse. He seems to have a good record, but with no experience of the english leagues this is a big gamble. If we start winning games & make the play offs, we will all be happy. Only time will tell whether this gamble will pay off.

Never normally comment, but I have exactly the same feeling about this season as when we went down. At that time posters were saying we had our best ever squad whilst seemingly oblivious to the progress other clubs were making. This time people we need to read between the lines. I see the situation as this -

- The finances are far worse than we think, at least in Ruperts eyes, and this is a disguised fire sale.
- Pearson needed to make signings to do his job his way and we are not able to do that.
- Any experienced players on 'professional' contracts will be sold, and I mean anyone - BWP, Safri, Davies
- Only youth players on peanuts will be kept, and this may work, given Jan Poors record.
- On the other hand it may not, we go down, BUT he will not be sacked as this is a long term plan - Think Ajax(?)
So in summary, you must be this tall to ride the rollercoaster, hold tight.

Why come on here to post this pathetic little post? Surely your PR company pays you to be a little more enthusiastic about your client's decision. Or does the fact that Lowe is back in power mean that you are winding down your efforts cos the main job of getting the dictator back in power has been achieved?
Why is it anyone who supports the CLUB is labelled PR I will always support the Saints does that mean I am being payed to come on here? I am not happy with this decison but will ALWAYS support SFC as do many others, the Echo has too much negativity on it and any optimist is instantly slandered

Wish all this crap would stop! We Southampton supporters used to talk about our team with pride, the good entertaining football they played, the dedicated players we had...Where has it all gone? All we talk about now is money, managers and those 2 idiots who are going to supposedly turn our football club around! We Support a FOOTBALL team not these 2 idiots who get more publicity than they deserve.I hate RL always have always will but this is my team whom I have followed for 30 years I won't let him or anyone else ruin my love for it. Let's remember it's all about a game of football not 2 arrogant, pompous business men!

Mr Dave, if I have told you once, I have told you onehundredmillion times, DO NOT EXAGERATE.
482nd manager since January 1996?
Don't you think that you are rather stretching the truth?

I support the club, It the club of my birth place and I want it to be a great club, but I will not support Lowe's regime, or blindly put money into something that is not working in the best interests of the city and quite frankly, treating me like a mug. Do you understand this?

Many fans are taking a stand because we love the club, we wouldn't spend all day on here if we didn't, unlike people who support Rupert who are being paid to do so, as we all know he IS BAD FOR THE CITY. END OF.

I hate Lowe and Wilde and not sure about this appointment, but will keep my views neutral until the season starts.

The worst thing we can do as fans is be devided before the season begins. I say give them a chance. They are being given a full pre-season. Lets hope the playing staff respond as I feel they deserve the biggest kick up the ar$e.

Would have liked Pearson to stay on but this is done now. Saints are Bigger than Lowe and Wilde. Lets hope this works out for the sake of SFC and not for Lowe.

i am getting sick of hearing how bringing hoddle back would have saved us. how do you know that? can you predict the future? because as i recall he went to wolves and flopped hard. when has reappointing a manager for a second spell ever worked i cant think of one example. why would you want him back anyway the man has no class

Reading between the lines we have no money and this is the only viable option. Clearly we can't afford the likes of Richard Wright so need to get the best out of the youngster who are courting interest from the likes of Liverpool.

Give Lancashire, Lallana, James etc a go alongside the older pro's. Since relegation we've seen what Bale and Walcott did at this level so why so glum? We never got good value from Viafara, Rasiak, Skacel and the rest.

I have sat down and tried to get around all this before doing this post, COYR SAINTS FOREVER
Well said saint38, who knows, it could be the best thing thats happened to Saints for a long time we will just have to wait and see.
The facts are, that at the moment we have no money and no investors but we have a bl**dy good Academy so lets use it. The fans have been screaming out for the young 'uns to be given a chance, well here it is and whatever our views are on Pearson, the new management and the new board its done and dusted so lets all get 100% behind the new look Saints and just hope that Lowe has actually learnt from his mistakes and maybe, just maybe, he's pulled off a master stroke.

Not to sure who this dutch guy is, but we as saints fans have to back him, his assistant wotte was in line for the job when Burley was put in charge, he seems the harder type who will put the players in place if they are playing poorly. Henderson has a good understanding of the club and will know how the likes of strachan ran the place. Hockaday, i have been told from some of the saints youngsters has strong belief in the urrent youth side, keep an eye out more for the likes of jamie white and mike byrne and joseph mills, rather than the likes of simon gillet, they are the ones that possess the real potntial. Will it work? depends if the senior players believe in this new regime as they may see it as more as a youth set up, we will need senior players in order to progress, are youth is good, but they will need support.

one thing i dont undertand is though, will we be signing any players? or are they just going to get loans and bring through youth?

Ans as for NP, he did well keeping us up, and he wanted money to spend in the summer that was not available, and i was not convinced by some of the signings (pericard, pearce). But i think he could have done well an his relationship with the fans was good, but Poortvliet was also very direct in his comments in the press conferece earlier, lets get behind him, but most of all the saints!

Here we go again that muppet Lowe in again everyone kept in dark until last minute so media can not update fans back to the dark old Lowe days.

Nigel Pearson should have been given the time and chance to turn things around not just dumped by the money greedy Lowe who just wants to cream the profits out of the club.

How do we trust Wilde he leaves and then come back why???

The new managers are just puppets be hay lets hope Im wrong and turn things around will back Saints to the hilt as I love the club but cant stand Lowe.

Simon, you support the club so much that you have stated your intention to boycott next season. I will attend every match I can next season and give whole hearted support to the team. I don't care much for Lowe, Wilde nor Crouch but I do care that the team gets the support of the fans to cheer them on to win as many games as possible.

If a seat at St Marys costs a lot, how much is a noose? The season is nowhere near to beginning yet and everyone is already ready for commiting suicide. I can imagine the opening day of the season, everyone wearing a pair of clogs and a funny hair cut, and then when we lose 1-0 the nooses will come in handy.
