THE tradition of pancake races have become a staple diet in the Hampshire events calendar.

This year Shrove Tuesday is on February 25 and ahead of that we have taken a trip down memory lane.

The gallery above features images spanning 30 years from 1970 to 2000.

1970

Sarisbury Green hosted a pancake race on February 10.

Children of the primary CE school enjoyed a break to watch their headmaster, Mr A Hindhaugh, in his role as the official starter.

A total of 26 runners entered and all finished the course of 200 yards, the pancake being flipped at the start and twice during the race.

Daily Echo:

First home was Mrs J Martin, closely followed by Mrs Blackwell and Mrs M Harrison.

The winner received an inscribed frying pan – the annual trophy donated by Industrial Dynamics Ltd.


1980

It was the perfect recipe for fun – 36 eggs, 18 pints of milk, nine pounds of flour and a bunch of good-spirited contestants.

The Tichborne Pancake race on February 17 its third year, was in aid of St Andrew's Church.

Daily Echo:

The frying pan honours were hotly contested between Tichborne and nearby Cheriton, with the latter the overall winner in the village relay stakes.

However, in the pub race, the Tichborne Ams gained victory over flowerpots.

1990

Discs of batter weren't the only things to occupy the sky at the Great Lakes Sponsored Pancake Dash on February 10 – there were rain clouds and consequently a lot of umbrellas.

Fancy dress was the order of the day as pancake pace men and women braved the elements to chart a steady course around the picturesque Hiltingbury Lakes.

Daily Echo:

It was the seventh year for the Chandler's Ford race which attracted a wide cross-section of contestants.


2000

Some were used for fun and games, others were covered in lemon and sugar; these pictures show pancakes in various states at a few different events.

A couple of the images show pupils of Kings Copse Primary School in Hedge End when they made pancakes for school inspector Ian Ian Troup.

Fun can be witnessed as the Mother’s Union posed for a picture during the warm-up of the Brockenhurst pancake race in Brookley Road.
