Motorists spared more go slows - for now

MOTORISTS in Hampshire have been told there will be no repeat performance of yesterday's go-slow protests - at least not for now.

Up to 100 agricultural vehicles clogged up the A31 causing traffic chaos as farmers vented their anger over soaring fuel prices.

But even though the convoy attracted national attention, the campaign organiser has vowed the next round of protests will take place elsewhere.

Bruce Horn of Farmers for Action, told the Daily Echo: "We have not made any plans for any more convoys in Hampshire in the near future. But we are going to keep niggling away across the country and keep up the momentum.

"If it proves successful then our next protest may be through London."

A stretch of the A31 between Cadnam roundabout and Stoney Cross came to a grinding halt yesterday as around 100 tractors, lorries and farm vehicles inched along the dual carriageway.

Police escorted the demonstration in a bid to keep disruption to a minimum but many of the surrounding roads were jammed for around three hours.

Officers said the event passed off peacefully and that there were no reports of incidents.

I thought it was about switching production of food to make fuel rather than for eating?

am I the only one who thinks this has been hyped up a little. If the media stopped being idiots and kept bigging up the fuel this and the fuel that - no one would care and we wouldn't be in this situation.

A stupid place to hold it in view of the high number of fatal accidents on this stretch of road.
Another example of poor thinking by police.

"We cannot afford to pay such he prices for our fuel, so by way of protest, we are going to drive our vehicles backwards and forwards on a totally unnecessary journey, using up precious fuel which we cannot afford"
Am I the only person who cannot understand these type of protests?? The fuel companies must be rubbing their hands together and laughing.
I would just drive onto a fuel station forecourt, get out of my vehicle and walk away.
When the forecourts are full of abandoned vehicles blocking the pumps, the right people might start to take notice.

I did'nt realize it was a police protest or choice???

Its all pointless unless you protest in London. the government don't notice these events outside the city of westminster. Thats why they changed the law to restrict protest in London.

all area's of the UK need to organise a protest in Westminster at the same time. there needs to be so many people the authoritys have to stand by and let the peaceful protest through!

How much fuel did these wan-kers waste on a pointless protest. The petrol stations are already running out of fuel because of strikes and they are wasting gallons of their own and the other poor sods who are caught up in it. The thick bast-ards use red diesel and claim that back through VAT. I bet they don't wait for hours at a petrol station waiting to fill up.
I hope they get burgled while they are out.

What a waste even more fuel that we cannot afford, whilst playing directly into the hands of the oil companies by making people panic buy when fuel is at it highest price?
No thanks.

I am fed up with hearing the whingeing bosses of Haulage companies and the like complaining about fuel prices. If a price rise puts some of these companies out of business it would suggest to me they are not very well run.
They are happy to live in a capitalist country and capitalism dictates only the fittest companies flourish.
Its the same with the farmers claiming to be struggling yet living off tax payers subsidies.
Let them sink as far as I am concerned.

A farmer who had a quarrelsome family called his sons and told them to lay a bunch of sticks before him. Then, after laying the sticks parallel to one another and binding them, he challenged his sons, one after one, to pick up the bundle and break it. They all tried, but in vain. Then, untying the bundle, he gave them the sticks to break one by one. This they did with the greatest ease. Then said the father, Thus, my sons, as long as you remain united, you are a match for anything, but differ and separate, and you are undone.”

Aesop quotes (Ancient Greek Fabulist and Author of a collection of Greek fables. 620 BC-560 BC)

Why don't the lazy farmers get their animals to do the pulling of machinery? These poors guys in Africa do it and do you see them complaining, get a life and protest where someone actually cares.

What a turn out for a worthy cause. The people stuck in the queues will mostly understand because these people were doing this not only for themselves, but as a general gripe about the level of the price of a gallon. Don't forget, they don't drive their tractors down the pub on Saturday night for their well earned glass of coke. Finally, they had to do the protest on a weekend because they are working 14 - 16 hour days, out in the fields and on the farms during the week. Well done the protesters.
