Delivery crew get that sinking feeling

IT was definitely enough to give them that sinking feeling.

For before their very eyes they saw a luxury speedboat which they had been hired to deliver from Southampton to Ireland slowly disappear under the waves.

Today the £200,000 Sealine 37, which had been imported to the UK from America, was lying at the bottom of Davy Jones' locker.

The two delivery men had made a fuel stop at Falmouth, Cornwall, but minutes later disaster struck when the boat crashed into sharp rocks at Zone Point near St Anthony's Head, close to the entrance to Falmouth Harbour.

The red-faced pair were able to leap to safety on nearby rocks.

They could only watch as the top-of-therange powerboat, complete with its power sunroof, bathing platform and LCD televisions, slowly disappeared under the waves.

Lifeboat crews and Falmouth Coastguard launched an immediate rescue operation.

A RNLI spokesman said: "The motor launch was travelling from Southampton to Falmouth where she was due to refuel before setting off on the second leg of her delivery journey.

"There were two people in the crew, one of whom was down below taking a rest when the vessel struck the rocks at an estimated speed of 15-16 knots.

"The impact caused a split in the hull and she started to take in water."

The lifeboats arrived on the scene within minutes and the two very shaken deliverymen were transferred to the all-weather lifeboat, where they were comforted and checked for any injuries.

The RNLI spokesman said: "Apart from some minor cuts and bruises received at impact both were fit and well but much shaken up and shocked."

Lifeboat crews tried to tow the crippled craft towards the shore where she could be safely beached.

Sadly it was a lost cause. The 36ft speedboat was so full of water that it had to be abandoned.

The RNLI spokesman added: "The motor launch then sank from view."

A spokesman for the Falmouth Lifeboat station said they were not sure how the speedboat hit the rocks.

After the rescue the deliverymen drifted back to Southampton with a lot of explaining to do.

I initially smiled when I saw this. Someone spends 200k on a toy while others live in poverty, then loses it. Ho Ho Ho.

Then I realised that it was probably insured and these idiots just put up my car/house insurance. Doh Doh Doh !

well done - you've perfectly illustrated the nasty mean spirited envy that shows why you will never have one of these boats of your own. - You might prefer to drag others down to your pit of jealousy rather than use their success as an inspiration to raise yourself up, but at least have the sense to keep quiet about it.
As for the two blokes who sunk it, well we're all laughing at them, but only because nobody was hurt.

Nope, boats like this one are usually driven, normally with a total disregard for all other users of the water. And £200,000 for a plaything like this? What an obscene way to splash your money about. Brings out the socialist in me that I didn't know was there!

200k for a boat like this seems cheap. Probably a tax fiddle going on somewhere. I would also wonder about the timing of the accident. What were the tides like when they set off? All very suspicious.

I read the echo too, says...

The comment by "tango" was not "nasty mean spirited" but a valid contibution about a story. He is entitled to his point of view, as are you. The nastiness, mean spiritedness is in fact contained within your comments, which suggest you, for some reason, over-reacted, and appear to be a tedious moralistic individual who got their knickers in a twist, unjustifyably.

Fastnet is in the Atlantic ocean not the Irish Sea. Try looking about four miles south west of the most southerly point of County Cork.

This "Socialist in You" doesn;t want anyone to own boats. or presumably cars, or houses, or designer clothes, or cosmetics or expensive wasteful holidays. So there is no point in working hard to earn more money then is there. Does that remind you of anywhere? Yes, it's a bit like North Korea or Albania under Hoxha. Anything else that nobody is allowed to do in this socialist utopia you'd like us all to live in? Better make sure we all know the rules up front.

That's because they aren't socialist, Southy. The places you mention have one thing that totalitarian states don't have, which is an affluent middle class of people who have worked hard for what they have and are entitled to spend their reward as they see fit.

Knowing one of the men delivering that vessel I can assure you that there is rather more to this story than the press managed to drag up to date.

If people are jealous of others with the guile, skill, or wealth to beg borrow or steal 200K to buy a sealine 37 then they need to open their minds and dream more.

As stated by another reader the important thing is that neither man was injured and more to the point no innocent bystanders or search and rescue people were injured either.

A motor vessel of that weight going at that speed would destroy most things in its path (except Cornish Cliffs). Luckily for the delivery crew they ran up a rocky outcrop/ledge and did not hit the cliff or they would in all likely hood be dead.

FYI Marine insurance premiums are really very high as they are a luxury item so a loss of this minor significance (money wise)in the broker/underwriters portfolio of clients is unlikely to affect anyones premium except the Sealine Owner. That person or his/her agents could possibly be more discerning and organised about how they go about employing delivery crew for their 'allegedly' badly equiped (safety gear wise)and poorly maintained yacht in future.

If you really want to know what affects your premiums then check out the Lloyds of London daily list of losses for maritime and aviation risks - now that really will make you gulp for air.

Live and let live and all power to those who dream and make it happen, because many many families around the world benefit (nay depend on)from the build, sale, maintenance, insuring and financing of luxury goods.
