NORTH West Hampshire MP Sir George Young formally opened the Michaelmas fair at the Fairground Craft and Design Centre at Weyhill on Saturday.

It was aimed at giving visitors a chance to step back in time and enjoy an exhibition commemorating the golden age of the fair, which was once regarded as the greatest in the kingdom'.

The Gallery - which normally hosts exhibitions local renowned and up-and-coming artists, photographers and crafts - has become a local history museum until 8 October.

The exhibition coincided with the fair, which featured more history on display including costumed stall-holders and an authentic pleasure fair.

Visitors were also able to spend the newly minted Fairground Groat, produced on site by resident metal worker Marek, on original Victorian rides.

Sir George reckoned the fair was an enormous success, re-creating the atmosphere of the original Weyhill Fairs that took place centuries ago'.

He added: "I hope that those who enjoyed the weekend will go back to the fairground and buy from the craft shops that are there during the week."

As part of the weekend a special flower show was held at St Michael and All Angels Church at Weyhill.
