HAMPSHIRE Autistic Society (HAS) and Hampshire Constabulary are working together to support people with autism who may come into contact with the police.
They have developed an Autism Alert Card which anyone across Hampshire who has been diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), can apply for.
The cards should be carried at all times and can be used to tell a member of the police that the carrier has autism.
They are designed to alleviate some of the anxiety an individual may feel when speaking to the police.
HAS chief executive officer Andrew Monaghan said: "Hampshire Autistic Society is extremely proud of this joint initiative with Hampshire Constabulary.
"Autism Spectrum Conditions are regarded as the hidden disability as so many people have yet to be diagnosed and the general awareness of such conditions is still in its infancy. This project will enable all cardholders to receive the support they need in a time of anxiety and help to raise the level of knowledge and understanding."
Cliff Parker from Hampshire Constabulary's diverse communities unit has responsibility for disability. He said the cards will help police improve the service they provide.
