PLEAS to save a Hampshire golf course fell on deaf ears last night as councillors approved proposals for its closure.
Golfers from Eastleigh’s Fleming Park Golf Course spoke against plans to turn the council-owned 18-hole course into public open space with allotments, picnic areas, cycle paths and parkland.
Chris Dore, from Hedge End, told councillors on the Eastleigh Local Area Committee: “Fleming Park Golf Course has been in existence for over 30 years and continues to be enjoyed by many local and visiting golfers.
“With the credit crunch hitting us all it can be assumed that many golfers will be reducing their costs – it is very likely that more people will be looking to play at Fleming Park for its sheer value for money as well as being a picturesque and interesting course.”
Golfers also called for the course to be reduced nine holes rather than shut altogether.
But, after hearing of the declining use of the course, the committee voted in support of a report recommending the golf course be closed, freeing up 71 acres of land for public use.
Eastleigh Borough Council’s Cabinet will make a final decision on the proposal next month.
