Flying the flag – thanks to the Echo

COUNCILS across Hampshire will be proudly flying the flag of St George on Thursday – thanks to the Daily Echo.

Confusion had reigned over Government advice over which flag to fly on the day of England’s patron saint.

But after the Daily Echo stepped in to inform council leaders that the guidelines only referred to central government buildings and not local authorities, every council confirmed they would fly the cross of St George.

It had been reported that guidelines stated that Government buildings with only one flag pole should hoist the Union flag on Thursday and not the St George’s Cross.

But Toby Sargent from the Government Department of Culture, Media and Sport explained that this was not a rule for local authorities and they had the freedom to choose which flag to fly and would not be breaking any rules.

Test Valley Borough Council, Hampshire County Council, New Forest District Council and Winchester City Council were all at odds as to which flag to fly, not wanting to be seen defying the government.

But each confirmed that in the light of this new information they would fly the flag of St George, joining Southampton City Council, Eastleigh Borough Council and Fareham Borough Council.

Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Ian Carr, said: “I am really pleased that we have gone back to look and the advice and will be flying the flag now because I don’t think that we do enough in this country to celebrate St George’s Day.”

The thing that puzzles me about St George's day is that he is somehow regarded as being British, which of coarse he wasn't.

Adopted by the British, just like the Royal family.

I think you find that if anything that is a British tradition not an English one Big Adam! Take a look at the site of the BNP. Its plastered with British Union Flags, but then it would given that the BNP is a BRITISH Nationalist Party!

One question.
"It had been reported that guidelines stated that Government buildings with only one flag pole should hoist the Union flag on Thursday and not the St George’s Cross."
Why not?

And another if I may.

Why are the UK politicians so affraid of the English? Too affraid to even let us fly our flag.

Quite why are folk so eager to celebrate St George's day? He was not English, is the patron St of 10 countries, and is hardly likely to encourage racial harmony having preached Christianity and battled Muslims?
Why not have a day to celebrate King Alfred the great? A real Englishman!

Having spent a number of years in the USA where virtually every house was adorned with the Stars & Stripes, I failed to detect any indication that it produced and unity amongst Americans.

I don't need to fly the cross of St George to show everyone that I am English! I know it, and don't need to prove it to anyone.
I am content for public buildings to fly the Union flag. This is the flag that indicates to one an all that Britain is GREAT BRITAIN!

The General Hospital canteen has been celebrating English food this week - but some idiot has used the Union flag throughout. Shame on you.

No doubt there will have been numerous committees and think-tanks set up, at great expense to the taxpayer, in order to come up with this. Just wait from the complaints from down St. Mary's way.......

YIPPIE! Common sense finally prevails! There is nothing wrong with flying the English flag - we are after all in England! I can understand that this country has come to making it a headline that we are actually doing this! Fly it with PRIDE!

I too ask your final question. It's mad that England's own Government cannot fly the George Cross. It is not offensive to those who aren't English living here as we have respect for their signs and flags when they display it, and afterall, WE ARE ENGLAND!!! Fly it with Pride as I do every day outside my house!

England doesn't have it's own government. Two Jags wanted to split the country up into regions- like Wessex round here, in a bid to divide us.

Your point being ???.

As for flying the Union Jack (yes I said Jack) what a load of sxxt.
Union Jack = Britain.
St Georges Cross = England.
We are not celebrating the Saint of Britain.

Why are we even discussing this subject??? Do other nations around the world spend time discussing wether or not they should display their flags or not?? Are we that assamed of being ENGLISH? Go to Scotland, wales or ireland and you will see their flag everywhere. They have some sort of independence. The English have to be british, the scots can be scots, the welsh are welsh etc. The only time we'english' get any recognision is through football where we are all regarded as hooligans anyway. Let the home nations go there own way, let them cut the appron strings and let us go back to being English and proud.
