Ashamed MP Viggers says sorry for claim

HAMPSHIRE MP Sir Peter Viggers has spoken of his shame and humiliation over his expenses claim for an island for the ducks in his pond.

He said that including the island in his taxpayer-funded second home claims was a “ridiculous and grave error of judgement”.

The ducks had never liked the feature and it was no longer being used, he added.

The veteran MP was forced to announce that he was retiring at the next election after details of the claims were published last week.

Among them were £30,000 towards gardening at his home, including £500 for manure and £1,645 on the ‘floating duck island’ for his pond.

However, it is not clear whether he was in fact reimbursed for the duck home, as a Commons official wrote “not allowable” by the side of the claim.

In a statement today, Sir Peter said: “I have made a ridiculous and grave error of judgment. I am ashamed and humiliated and I apologise.

“As has been reported, my claim for the duck house was rightly ‘not allowed’ by the Fees Office.

“I paid for it myself and in fact it was never liked by the ducks and is now in storage.

“Gosport is my home town and I have always worked hard for constituents. I am very proud to have been a Member of Parliament.”

Tory sources indicated that Sir Peter would be repaying a five-figure sum after his claims were ruled excessive by an internal Conservative scrutiny panel. He said today that the prospect of any repayments would be considered “in due course”.

Sir Peter, 71, who has been MP for Gosport since 1974, was told by Tory leader David Cameron to either quit or be fired when the claim was disclosed.

Wasn't there a For Sale sign outside this property a few months back?

Believe he was going to resign in any case because of his age.

Why did we pay anything for his constituency home (no doubt moved several times!) Any expense should be for the London property which would have been paid for years ago, furnished and any wear and tear should then be down to him.

What about party workers who gave up their time and gave everything for free so he could be voted in. Bet even the thank you party was booked down to expenses!

Who would work for him in any capacity now. On your lawnmower Viggers and GO NOW!

Love the proposed Hampshire Flags - particularly the PIG one. Can see this flying over Peter Vigger's residences but not suitable for a general Hampshire flag.

The designer should copyright the design - would make a bomb we could all fly them on our cars and hoot as we go by. Make a great on yer bike present to Viggers with a duck in the corner.

it is strange that all of these money grabbing toffs are very apologetic AFTER they've been caught.........a message to every criminal in the land is, when you get caught just say it was a very bad error of judgement, you're sorry and you will pay it all back.........that should get you all off the hook with the magistrates or judges!!!!

Its amazing how many of these hypocrites express their shame NOW they have been caught, its also perhaps less amazing that these are the self same MPs who tried to exempt themselves from the Freedom of Information Act...which ultimately has been their downfall. Looking at Viggers, I suspect he is already too old to be an active MP and probably planned to stand down anyway. My suspicion is that there will be many others who will jump off the gravy train as it hits the buffers, having already established their financial security at taxpayer expense on a one-way one-sided property development career. My probelm is that those who will replace them will be as bad, albeit certainly more circumspect. As ever though, they will conceal what they can't legitimise, and legitimise what they can't conceal. And any so called referendum on MPs "allowances" will not result in any real choice for the electorate, simply the least bad of two choices.

For my own part, I wish I could get so many "allowances" that my salary, as with MPs, becomes my "spending money" and my living expenses, from duck islands to food, would be paid for by the taxpayer and is non-taxable..oh, and get the best pension scheme in the world at the end of very few years "work"...
