Battle to save Lymington Lido

CAMPAIGNERS have launched a bid to secure the future of one of the oldest outdoor swimming pools in the country.

Lymington’s sea water baths usually open from May to September but this year its doors have remained firmly shut.

As revealed by the Daily Echo in April, health and safety problems have limited the time it will be in use this summer.

The 176-year-old baths, said to be the largest on the south coast, are regarded as the perfect place to cool off when temperatures soar. But the 90-metre pool is currently empty.

Now keen swimmer Cynthia Covey has started a petition in an attempt to get its owners, the town council, to open it as soon as possible.

She is angry that work needed has not been done while the baths have been closed over the winter.

She said: “My main beef is that it wasn’t sorted out over the winter. They’ve had since last summer to do it.”

Deputy mayor Councillor Paul Hickman said the council had received health and safety advice that there was a rusty handrail in the pool which could cause a cut, there were cracks in the pool wall and boards missing in the fence, which meant someone could get in when the pool was closed.

In addition, there were weeds between the blocks around the pool.

He said: “We were without a town clerk for eight months and many of the tasks that were needed to be done were simply not programmed. I can’t give a definite date for re-opening at the moment as we are subject to a health and safety audit and obviously we can’t go against that otherwise corporate responsibility would be compromised.”

He said he hoped it would be open by the start of the school holidays in July.

So what have the Council done since they have been without a Town Clerk then?

Is EVERYTHING on hold in the meantime?

How about they get off their rear ends, show a bit of initiative, create a 'working party' and get the work done.

FFS these people are supposed to be intelligent - they can't get local companies involved to sponsor some of the work??????

Time for a clean sweep - get some local younger businesspeople involved with a bit of drive....

'Use it or Lose it' - that will be their next statement I bet...

I expect Counsellor Hickman has been given a nod and a wink to downgrade these baths. I sometimes wonder if the position of a councillor is really just a figure head -most of them have had their teeth extracted and no authority other than to do as their Masters tell them. Even in the economic 'high times' there was still a lack of maintenance and improvement on anything agreeable to the public. So my suspicious mind is asking,is this piece of land more valuable as a block of flats? Money, money money.

I have a feeling that the Sea Water Baths was donated to the people of Lymington.....mind you backhanders aside, i am sure this could be developed.

I cant believe that this piece of heritage, something that is practically unique is under threat. I Currently dont live in the Uk but when i worked in lymington over the summer i would nip down for a swim in my lunch breaks, not everyone can get to the beach so this is the next best thin. This cant be allowed to happen.

Yes - these despicable masons who meet in secret are at it again plotting to close swimming baths and close New Forest Car Parks. The mayor of Lymington is actually a CIA clone and the town clerk has been abducted by aliens. If only Mulder and Scully lived in Flushards they'd get to the bottom of this - but who says they don't? ..... And who put the weeds in the cracks anyway? This is just the tnin end of a very thick wedge indeed. The truth is out there, and Goard is on the case.
