THE strongest push for the biggest reduction in traffic speed in Winchester is set to be launched by civic chiefs.
City councillors are to press for the limit to be cut from 30mph to 20mph across the city on all roads except for A-class ones.
City council officers have identified Stanmore, Highcliffe and Winnall as possible areas for action.
However, the county council is unlikely to agree to the measure in one go, and the city council has currently only earmarked £10,000 for the scheme.
The county currently has a policy of only introducing 20mph where the average speed is 24mph or less. If more, than other traffic calming measures have to be introduced which are much more expensive.

It's usually bumper to bumper on those roads, average speed is more like 2.4 mph!(not 24)

I've got to be honest as a cyclist I dont have any problems with 30 and 40 zones. I can see the benefit of 20 around schools in certain places but things should be fine at 30... ..its just some driver's behaviour that needs correcting, not the speed limit. The little toerags will still be toerags imo.
