MP accounting for her claims

SATELLITE navigation kits and books on Tony Blair are some of the items listed in Basingstoke Tory MP Maria Miller’s expenses files. Other claims were for camera equipment and office plants.

When the expenses scandal first broke in May, The Gazette had access to the MP’s expenses after she brought them in to our Pelton Road offices.

Now, after a Freedom of Information request prompted the Commons authorities to publish all of its MPs’ expenses for a three-year-period, another examination has been possible.

More than £400,000 in allowances have been claimed during Mrs Miller’s first three years in Parliament.

Her additional cost allowance (ACA) claims for her second home in Merton, South London, mostly consist of mortgage interest payments of about £1,400 per month. She designates a rented property in Old Basing as her main home.

Other claims revealed in the documents include monthly cleaning bills of £200, a one-off carpet cleaning bill of £190 and a £90 bill for her garden.

In total, Mrs Miller’s claims came to £21,632 in 2005/2006; £22,080 in 2006/07 and £23,000 in 2007/08.

The maximum she could claim under the ACA was £21,634 in 2005/06, £22,110 in 2006/2007 and £23,083 in 2007/08.

Claims made under the Incidental Expenses Provision (IEP) were spent on running her Westminster office and her day-to-day work as an MP.

Many of the claims were for stationery, postage and other running costs and paying the Parliamentary Resources Unit for research and briefings.

Other documents revealed spending on electronic goods, including two satellite navigation systems, costing £387, and camera equipment costing £1024.91.

Kitting out the office in the last three years included office plants, which cost the taxpayer £97.50, office chairs costing £480, a fridge at £99.94 and TV for £79.99.

On the communication allowance for publicity, which Tory leader David Cameron wants scrapped, the MP spent £6,446 in 2007/08, which included a £1,762 bill for her website.

Responding to the new publication, Mrs Miller has insisted all her claims were entirely connected with her work.

She said: “I think that it is absolutely right that there is complete transparency in the money that is spent on MPs’ work, both in running the office and doing their work.”

In February 2008 a receipt shows she paid £154.61 for books including Blair Unbound and Blair’s Britain.

One receipt also shows children's books, including Vikings Don’t Wear Pants: Potty Poems of the Past.

However, Mrs Miller, has categorically denied claiming for these, saying she was only reimbursed for books connected with her political work.

Many of the published documents have details blacked out which Mrs Miller condemned, saying: “I think the way that the expenses were published has simply served to breed further mistrust.”

Oh well nice to know what Basingstokes MP is claiming for. It is interesting to note that Ms Miller is claiming for expenses that her party leader would like scrapped - seems a bit of right hand not knowing what the left is doing.

You do not mention 3 parking tickets in Basingstoke for £1, £2 and £7 this is made worse that she can park at the Conservative offices for Free.

Al;so 2 claims for paying the Basingstoke Conservative Party £1,600 on each occaision for office space, as far as I know never used and services of the agent all legal but just as bad as paying a friend or family member the Conservative Party should not be funded by tax payers.

By claiming the maximum allowed and for such things as parking, cleaning and plants she really has milked us.

I claim expenses for my work but have a standard I set I would dream of charging for such things. If I park for a day on client business that can be quite expensive but £1, £2 and £7 this is too much.

The books ordered show 2 childrens books and the invoice seems to add up regretably too many invoices have after this been blacked out including 1 to the Conservative party I can not believe the invoice details are secret.

None of them should be able to claim expenses.

Most normal people working longer hours for less money get no such privilege.

I suspect Heath is doing this 'trolling' from his Council paid for laptop and Council paid for broadband and my personal view is politics must pay very well if both he and his wife choose to do it.

I suspect a real days work would kill both of them

No.

Was it you that had a child in that failing school?

That may explain to my why you can't blame the teachers for everything.

I thought not, so what gives you the right to be so judgemental and high and mighty. You are a typical nasty Tory who is a throw back to the bad old days of the 'nasty Tory party'.
I have not even mentioned the teachers - you have - there are good and bad everywhere.

Crikey, that must be the biggest slap of the year.
You should be ashamed Mr Butcher.
Apologies just won't work in this case.
You've revealed yourself entirely.

Maria Miller is guilty of 'flipping' her home for personal gain. In addition Maria has claimed for goods that are for her private benefit. In both cases someone else (taxpayer) is required to pay the costs.
In any other walk of life a prosecution would result and they definately would not keep their job.
David Cameron seems to have taken a different approach to the old Tory MP's offering little support. However the newer Tories ( and of course his old Etonian pals) he seems to be supportive of so there is a good chance Maria will keep her job.

If anyone was offended by my comment above I unreservedly apologise. It was not becoming of political debate and should not have been quoted. May I point out the circumstances behind the comment though - when political debate is lowered to bringing in ones spouse, children and domestic situation to a slanderous level then that would be a red rag to anyone. (In another article that has now been cleared).
My political debates are NOT about me but about the people of Basingstoke which is why I follow and support Phil Heaths Basingstoke First Community Party.
Unlike certain people above I do not think that I am too big to apologise when I have made a poor and ill judged comment and I hope that it will be accepted.

Please note - that as good debate is about meaningful discussion and not personal attacks, I will not respond to any comments posted by R_Johnson or anyone I deem to be linked with them.

To the people of Basingstoke and especially residents of Popley, Merton Rise and Marnel Park
I would like to bring to your attention what a Tory Party blogger said about our estates...of Merton Rise, Marnel Park and Popley... that they would be better places with travellers here and if they sent their children to Everest that they would probably improve the school and its exam
grades. I personally find that arrogant, rude and disrespectful to not just the estates in question but all residents in Basingstoke. When I
challenged him
to apologise this was his reply...

'NO. I'm not going to apologise to the people of Popley. We have seen money thrown at a school and it continues to fail. We have seen Tesco refuse to deliver to parts of it. I think it is fair game to make jokes about it and I don't apologise for it. I can understand your emotional turnmoil and that your feelings may be hurt but I don't honestly care.'

The teachers in Everest are working hard to improve the reputation of the school and do not need this.

The expenses scandal shows how given choice the MP's of all parties will take advantage if given the chance. In addition to expenses they should also take a review on how they spend their time. The position of MP is the only job they should have; no outside paid positions should be allowed. Many other aspects need bringing in to the 21st Century. An obvious one is the House of Commons. As I understand it we have 300 or so seats. We have around 645 MP's. Something wrong here ?. Also when the debates take place in the Commons the place often looks empty. Perhaps the country would be better run if the MP's were given tasks to improve the lot of the British people rather than spending hours fiddling their expenses.

The more you look the more you find.
Feb 07 and Feb 08 2 tax advise Bills for over £350 each claimed for over £1200 on petty cash in a year I thought her coming clean was a bit convienient seems she missed several interesting claims this really is the end.

These MP's must go and office and staffing in the future for MP's must maintained by the civil service not by the MP's.

Sorry Maria you should stand asside.
