Prospective Southampton FC owner Markus Liebherr worth €3bn

The 'ideal owner' for Saints The 'ideal owner' for Saints

SAINTS’ potential new owner Markus Liebherr has a personal fortune estimated at two-and-a-half billion pounds – but is expected to take a sensible and considered view to his spending at St Mary’s.

The 61-year-old, who was born and educated in Germany but is now a Swiss national, is expected to complete his Saints buyout today using personal wealth.

But the worldwide financial group also aiming to take over at St Mary’s were last night frantically trying to contact administrator Mark Fry to see if they could remain in the race by upping their bid.

Liebherr was a part of the Liebherr Group family business, which in 2008 turned over 8,408 million euros.

He had stood down from the board a year earlier to concentrate attention on his MALI Group, a hightech engineering company, made up of five independent companies and all belonging to him.

He had previously bought the MALI Group – whose companies are based in Switzerland and Germany in 1994.

A source who knows Liebherr told the Daily Echo last night: “This is a very sensible and serious guy.

“He is buying this out of his personal money and it is not in any way connected with the Liebherr family business."

“If he does acquire Saints he will not spend money all over the place, he will be sensible and measured.

“But he does understand what he needs to be done.

“It seems a long time coming at Southampton but this is the ideal purchaser and one who knows what you’ve got to do to get out of League One and the Championship.

“He won’t just go mad and throw money at it, but Southampton are getting a first rate new owner.”

Though Liebherr will be using personal wealth to finance his takeover as an individual purchaser, his philosophy on money is borne from his upbringing.

The Liebherr family business was set up by the late Hans Liebherr in 1949 and now employees 32,000 people worldwide. But despite its colossal size and growth, it is one of few companies that has grown without ever taking on any debt.

He sounds like the perfect guy to take us forward, a proper businessman who is used to success and hopefully wont settle for anything less on the football field. Which hopefully means he will identify we are well short in the important department of putting a proper football team on the pitch and do something about it. Great news, lets get the deal done today..

We now need desperately to prepare for next season and cannot afford any more delays. this is going to be such a pivotal season in our history and one that apart from the -10 we will be starting 5-6 weeks behind everyone else.

This looks great and I hope Mr. Fry won't be tempted by this other group simply because they'll throw another fiver into the pot. My only question about Mr. Liebherr is why buy Saints, or, indeed, any football club? Nothing I can read on the internet suggests he is a football fan and his portfolio doesn't suggest he has ever owned a sports business. So what's in it for this 61 year old? I just get this feeling that there's someone else lurking behind the scenes with an interest in the club and that Mr. Liebherr is that person's backer. I have this recurring nightmare wherein the deal is done, a press conference is called and his life-long friend Rupert Lowe is unveiled as his Chief Exec. As an ex Navy man I have my superstitions. Oh but then no, that couldn't happen could it? Please God that couldn't, please.

We still need to cross the finishing line.

But this really does seem like a golden sunrise.

With a truly proven business man at the helm with the money to finance the club, his first task will be to equip the club with a sound management structure. That will take a few weeks at the very least. We will need to be patient and not start clamouring for some of thenames recently mentioned.

We don't need big names, we need people who will become big names.

I would like to see Wotte looked after following his loyalty in recent weeks but I do not think they will pick him as the new boss.
His time may come with more experience but I don't think it's now.

I'm just busting to hear that the is confirmed and all signed off. The new season may be a rough time while the club rebuilds. Now is the time for stability, rebuilding foundations and watching this club re-grow.

HOW COOL IS THAT !!

A very good question.

So what do we bring?

We bring a first class ground, based in one of the country's biggest cities with excellent communication links via the port and airport.

His companies already have business links here and having a football club presents not just the opportunity to build a quality football club but also to use it to build further business contacts in the UK.

It's a wise move to buy a club where there are no remnants of past incompetance. He can start here with a clean sheet and build afresh.

He won't be in a big hurry, he will want to do it right. This club represents a truly green field site for him to build a top European football club.

In five years from now he will step back and look at how he got this club for a bargain price and achieved massive success. Shrewd or what?

That is what we bring to the table.

Now let's see what he brings. I must say it all sounds very good indeed.

I hope breakkie tastes great for all you Saints fans back home in the South.

Golden times ahead and happy ones too.

I am curious to know who is behind the World Wide Financial Group represented by Keith Harris. Harris is a guy who reps for serious money investors.

Curiosity thought won't kill this cat and I'm really happy with Mark Fry's handling of things. It would take a fair bit to tempt him away from a secure deal with Markus Liebherr as he has already said several times he has the security of the club as his paramount aim.

We would have crucified MF if he had not taken MLT's Groups exclusivity fee when it was tabled, but he had no hesitation in immediately moving on when the money didn't front. That urgent act brought the current deals to the table.

Thanks Mark Fry.

I'm with you Stevie. Apart from anything else there is no indication that the new owner(whoever that turns out to be) will want to throw money around. As the saying goes - to make a small fortune out of football, start with a large one.

I would still prefer to see the bulk of any investment going to toward developing talent. Otherwise football is just about buying a team - just another Starbucks franchise.

Steve, I am totally with you! I want this club to become self sustainable. I want to have a well respected club... I would hate to be a Man City or Chelsea fan.... purchased success is pointless... he who spends the most wins the most... I would rather have a club with a bit of class. Look at Aston Villa, I would much rather have a supportive backer that invests cautiously and does not want thier club to become a huge joke.

If Saints never make the prem it would not bother me, infact I would goes as far as to say what is the point of the prem these days? Spend, spend spend or just hang on if you are lucky. The rest of the World is laughing at the Prem!

I agree as well mate. I'm currentluy living and working in London and there are plenty of life long Chelsea fans hear who openly admit that they prefered it before they were Chelski.

They say that when they reached a cup final or had a good year in the league, it felt so much more deserved.

Plus, now most of the true fans can't even get tickets cause either they can't afford it or that all the fair weather fans (from miles away) keep snapping all the tickets up.

As for the QPR fans hear, they think that their club is being run a little too cautiously.

I'm proud to be a Saint whatever the weather!!

Blackburn did it a few years ago, their fans knew they bought the title, It didn't mean as much. Look a them now, money is ok, but a well run sustainable club, that really does not need to sell it's best players is far and away better in the long run, than a club that's buy success, and fade away as an also ran a few years later.

I still don't really understand how you splash that much cash in League 1. Why would a decent player drop down from the Championship, let alone the Premier League, to play against the likes of (no offence) Stockport? If the Swiss deal goes through, and I'm praying to a non-existent god that it does - we'll maybe bring in some decent-by-League 1 standards players but there's no way we'll be spending millions on anyone.

Well, seeing as he's a business man, unless he's a life-long Saints fan, he'll have thought about an exit strategy.

It actually might not be bad business – look at the club's turnover in the Premier League, look at it's position now, consider you've bought when the price is about as low as it could go in the midst of a recession and think of the potential for selling on if you bring reasonable success and come out of the other side of the downturn in good shape.

Word.

What's very nearly destroyed this club is the belief among some fans that we should be competing with the likes of Chelsea and Man U in the transfer markets. We just don't have a wide enough fan base to sustain that level of investment, so we need to get real about where we can end up. That said, there's an awful lot of dross in the bottom half of the Premier League, so I don't think it's unreasonable to think we can get into the top half in five to ten years, but we won't do ourselves any favours if we think we can 'do a Man City' (which, to date, hasn't gone that amazingly for them).

I understand where you are coming from, I like Wotte too but I don't believe he motivates the players as he should.

He is so inexperienced in the English game. I watched countless games at the back end of last season and we really very poor and made so many stupid mistakes. I don't accept the argument around the boardroom unrest because football is football, 11 v 11.

Wotte made some stupid substitutions and I can't stand the rediculous formations we stick out. 4-4-2 is all we need.

I like your optimism Dan and my opinion may not be shared by others, but I'm a realist and look at the facts.

New owners, great but we need fresh ideas and some more grit in the team if we are to suceed!

Mark Wotte + budget = improvement and advancement. Give him a chance he deserves it. It would however be interesting for someone to post a break down of pounds spent per win under each of our last era of coaches.... curious? I'm sure Wotte will have saints flying like eagles and hawks soon... At least this year I want the budget spent wisely on players and development not a fancy manager.
Correct me if I am wrong but wasnt one of the first actions of Wotte to revert back to 4 4 2?

Maybe it was!?! but the team didn't set out like that on the pitch. I only ever seem to remember one striker up top with others feeding in around. We created nothing. So poor.

Good to hear talk of dignity on here. Last year was also a time for dignity and stable rebuilding of our club. Regardless of whether Lowe was the man for the job or how much he was unliked by how many, it, most of the fans in the stadium wanted the club to survive and grow whatever. A shame some saw Lowe's removal as the main focus of their support. We need to reconnect with the people of Southampton and the area as being simply fans of football and not as haters of Lowe, as we must have seem to others.

hahaha. blimey. Benzema?? who happens to be a £30m+ target for Real Madrid?? i nearly fell of my chair reading that. Beckford is a good call though.
i pushed the boat out with benzema, but you never know.
Surely you're a skate (the clue being your lazy and transparent Pompey hating user name)? Can't think of any other reason you'd be coming up with this total tripe. Take your Man City expectations, divide by about 100 and get real. If he does turn out as someone who spends big in the right ways, great, but your ridiculous expectations are the sort that have caused a lot of bad blood and moaning at our club in recent times. The guy is saving our club. That is good enough for me.
"but your ridiculous expectations are the sort that have caused a lot of bad blood and moaning at our club in recent times." ... NO!!! The reason we are all arguing is because of d!ck heads like yourself who jump on innocent people who are just trying to have a bit of a laugh.

Why don't you get a life and leave the guy alone! Everyone is aloud an opinion!

Jesus, I am glad I am not friends with you!
Likewise. Surely you've just totally contradicted yourself on your passionate plea for free speech?

Cracks me up, so thanks.

And it's 'allowed' by the way.

Anyway, I'm delighted and the silly comments of the few will no longer wind me up, (until you start moaning within two days of this deal).

Rejoice – our club is saved.

By the way Saint's Fan 25, this is the post I felt demanded a reply exercising my right to free speech. Not exactly respectful of our new owner. There were others, but this sort of attitude winds me up.

To be honest though, it does have all the hallmarks of a Pompey imposter, so I'll guess that's the case.

Peace.

Now, to celebrate.
