Markus Liebherr's takeover explained by Nicola Cortese

MARKUS Liebherr was determined to buy Saints - after reading fans comments on the Daily Echo website.

In an exclusive interview with Adam Leitch, the man who brokered the deal has spoken about the new future Southampton FC can look forward to under Markus Liebherr.

Nicola Cortese spoke exclusively to the Daily Echo and the full interview is only available in today's edition.

He was the man who first introduced Liebherr to the idea of buying the club and saw the deal through to completion.

He tells of how the new owner would log on to dailyecho.co.uk everyday to see what fans were saying, how the deal first came about and what the new owner's next steps are.

Make sure you don't miss the full exclusive interview in today's Daily Echo

Marcus Liebherr and Nicola Cortese should not only be given the keys to St Marys, they should also be given the keys to the city.

Perhaps a new shirt with the red and white stripes on the front and a Swiss flag incorpoated on the back.

On SSN they are saying LeTis might have some sort of role in the club. The news gets better and better.
Exciting times eh.

Thank-you VERY much Nicola and Markus for your faith and investment in a sporting institution.

Feel free to take this song and celebrate the Saints SUNNY NEW DAY:

I hope talks go well with Matt le Tissier and that both parties are happy with working together in some capacity. I don't know how good a thinker/planner Matt is, but obviously the Saints fans hold him in high regard.

Thanks again Markus, Nicola and the team (and Mr. Wotte) for your patience and faith.

From a saints fan in Australia.

oh btw, would someone be able to offer some sort of internet video of Saints games for people elsewhere in the world? Even if it were a delayed .avi which could be downloaded via torrent within 24 hours of each game. We have no way of watching Saints in Australia etc.

Well if nothing else all our rantings, hopes and fears, and worries about the future seem to have done some good. Perhaps we need to thank The Echo for providing this forum for us to express our views?
Every football club in the country has fans like us...the seaon ticket holder, the "never miss a game" type, and the passionate casual. Let's face it we all follow one team and will until the day we day...better that than the day the club dies!
So whether you were a luvvie or an anyone else but, let's all celebrate - we've got a club to follow.
I'm not one for friendlies usually but I think all fans should show their thanks by going to the Ajax game...

Markus and Nicola both deserve our thanks for basically saving SFC from extinction.

They have shown great resilience and patience in the purchase process and we must now do the same as whilst the long term future looks good the return to some real form on the pitch may not be instant.

What we as fans need to do now is pack the stadium and show them the passion they so obviously saw on this website.

Also a big thank you to the Echo which got a lot of stick through the last few months but no doubt played a part especially in exposing Pinnacle for what they were.

Myself, I've never been a hardcore supporter but as a local was totally dismayed by what was happening with this club. I'm sure now the dead rot has been cleared out the club will receive far greater support. NB) We could do with a couple of experienced creative playmakers to pull the strings in midfield and help bring on the youngsters. Give Idiakez a call, perhaps he'll come back.

After all the recent debarcle(last 5years)I think we finally have a man that will bring us success. But we will have to be patient. There will be a few wobbles on the pitch in this league and its upto us to get behind the team.

Marcus being a shrewd man, I wouldn't be supprised if MLT has a role in the future of our great club in some capacity.

Thank you Marcus and Nicola for saving our club. It is a relief for the first time in ages us fans can now concentrate on our football rather than worry about what is happening in the boardroom. To know our club is being run by such a successful and professional outfit is the best outcome we could hope for. Much as Le Tiss is a legend and always will be I thought the interview on Sky was spot on. PR is great but they are looking to fill each role with specialists and experts in their field. Unfortunately Le Tiss expertise is in playing and those days are long gone. The professionalism of the approach from Marcus and Nicola is to be applauded, no time for sentiment here there is a job to be done. And for that idiot that said he is German and his companies are Swiss, factually incorrect, he was born in Germany but is actually a Swiss National and as such would hold a Swiss passport. Either way the guy is a winner and thats the important thing.

At the start of the '59/60 Season we were in the Old Third Division (now League 1) when we ended up Champions, with Norwich second - who knows? Anyway, I was hooked forever! 50 years on, we are now at the threshold of a new era, so let's all pull together. Support the team whatever, give the Swiss backers 150% support, turn up in your thousands and live the dream. No more infighting, no more Lowe, no more negative vibes. I'd also like to echo thanks to Leon for keeping the faith and preventing the club from going under while Fry did the business. Whatever the Swiss achieve, let's remember that Leon was the man who made it possible.

This is what we have needed for so long and not a Pimms swilling, jolly hockey sticks meglamaniac like red cheeks Rupert, who butted in at every opportunity!! I saw this on another website and it encapsulates all that I feel at the moment.

What I want from Markus:

I want sound business management that keeps the club safe from the receiver, I want steady progress built on a solid foundation, I want stability in club management at all levels, I want to hold on to the good players coming out of our academy, I do not want Markus to see us as a plaything to dispose of when he gets bored.

If I had been given 2 choices for SFC at the end of last season for this seasons future...

1) Stay in the Championship, but struggle on under Lowe with and uncertain future

2) Get relegated to League 1, and go into adminstration get a 10 point deduction, but then be bought by a billionaire making us debt free with a secure future.

I would take option 2 every time!

My first game was MU v Saints at Old Trafford (we lived in Mcr) back in the days when Best and Charlton were playing for them. My Dad a rugby fan took me in the hope we would get spanked and it would turn me over to rugby. As it turned out we won 4-1 with Ron Davies scoring a hattrick and I was hooked and spent many happy hours in the Stretford End supporting the Saints.

Next to that and the cup victory yesterday was perhaps my best day as a Saints fan. Unfortunately I now live in Qatar but still tracel down from Mcr for games when I am back on leave. Lets all now get behind the team and the support staff to continue to do our bit.

Perhaps a fans rendition of "Deutschland Uber Alles" might be in order to kick off the Millwall match. Later on, maybe a version of that song in Peter Pan..."We're following the Leibherr, the Leibherr, the Leibherr. We're following the Leibherr - as far as Saints can go"

I have followed the Saints since being one of the hundred mascots at the centenary game in Nov '85 and although university, ten years military service (former Tiger)and now living in the Midlands somewhat prevent regular attendance at SMS, I do try to get to games where possible (mostly away) and consider myself a fan. It has therefore pained me to see the amount of negativity and scorn poured over recent proceedings that made me wonder if there would ever be a future for the club.

It would seem that a miracle has occurred which has restored the faith in the majority- some never lost it but it certainly waivered for a few. Those who still doubt should simply stay away.

A second miracle in KD's new contract is almost unbelievable and I am astonished at the display of loyalty that has been shown in this day and age of greed and dishonesty in the game.

I am going to do what I can to get to the Ajax game; only question is, will I get a ticket. I sense a full house!!

In the meantime, I'm off to buy a cuckoo clock and some chocolate.

I, for one, am not looking to see a big name manager at this stage, I want our money invested in good players, (left back and centre foward a priority) not to see our cash feeding someones ego.

Maybe when we are on a roll we can get someone in to make us the finished article, it is too early for that, loyalty is the prime mover and none more loyal than Kelvin D, Michael S and Mark W, they must be given first bite.

My thanks to them and of course to our saviours, it has been rough, it is up to the fans to support the Club, big time, otherwise our efforts will have all been in vain. COYR!

How about posting your exclusive interview on the web site so those of us living abroad can read it? Security word "echo-exclusive"
Yep! I would like to read it but not much chance that I will pick up a copy of the echo at one of the newsagents in Sydney

Spot on !!

By the way , I'm curious about the legal entity status of the club now. Are we privately owned, are we a Plc or Ltd Company .. or what?

Sorry if I've missed this in the press but I have no idea what legal status we have now.

Charlie Wayman wrote: Don't get me wrong Pompey will always be our bitter rivals but can we now drop the WE HATE POMPEY chants. To me it shows the club in a bad light and takes us down to their level. When Marcus Liebherr comes to the ground next maybe our appreciation should demonstrated with the appropriate chants such as ALWAYS LOOK ON THE MARCUS SIDE OF LIFE. I'm sure the fans will come up with something.
It should be in the deeds to being a saints fan "WE MUST ALWAYS HATE POMPEY"
I agree with Charlie, the anti-Pompey songs are purile, shame all real Saints supporters and all true football fans.
The place for hate chants is the KKK. Nearest functioning branch Georgia. Cheerio to all Pompey haters, and don't get the idea you will be missed in Southampton.
Hating your local rivals is part of football, so long as its good natured hatred.

I lived in South Wales for years and Swansea/Cardiff hate have a similar thing going on, I visit Ipswich matches and they hate Norwich. This is all part of the fun of football that you don't get with cricket, rugby, tennis etc.

I saw PSV play at Portman road and the PSV fans united the crowd with a chant of "stand up if you hate the Germans".

I hope Ajax fans don't try that one - as now we'll have to boo them for it!!!

Markus - free entry to kids under 12 with adults please. Our youth support has suffered as we fell down the leagues to the point at which, let alone ManU and Chelsea shirts being seen on SOuthampton post coded streets but even dare I say it Pompey. The club has to re-connect with the kids for the future. I'm sure SMS would be filled if you went down this route. I doubt you'll have a full ground throughout the season but as you say, this is for the longterm and I fear we are losing local kids support simply because of our league position. This should grab them, especially with the extra excitement engendered buy the prospect of ownership under yourself. All the best

Well Well Well.....
What a stressful few months!! The news this week has had my head spinning at long last SFC is saved THANKYOU SOOOOOOOOOOO VERY MUCH!!!!! Mr Liebherr.
Thank you also to Mr Wotte for remaining a true pro throughout! Although I must admit that I felt the new brush would sweep clean to make way for new and exciting times...
I've been a Saints fan since 69' and was a steward under the west stand for many years and the security word
(Upon-Hurt) could go no where near describing the way I/we would have felt had our club disappeared! it hurts enough knowing that we're in Div 3!! somewhere we don't belong....
So thanks again Markus and your team, and Le God the upmost respect to you for your continued loyalty and endeavours in (yet again) trying to keep the club afloat - thanks Matt.

Well fellow Saints fans like you I wait with baited breath and a sense of shear excitment at what awaits us!!
