Alan Pardew appointed as Southampton manager

Alan Pardew has been appointed as the new Saints manager on a three-year contract.

The former Reading, West Ham and Charlton boss, who turns 48 tomorrow, was in talks late last night ahead of becoming Markus Liebherr’s first manager at St Mary’s.

Pardew said: "I am proud and very excited to be joining a club with an immense history and huge potential for improvement.

"Everything is here in terms of quality of stadium, training facilities and now financial stability.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

"I look forward to working with the squad and with the executive management as part of a team committed to achieving progress.

"Of course, I will bring my own style of football management to the club, but as part of a plan being evolved at the club to achieve long-term success."

Liebherr said: "We are delighted to have been able to attract Alan to St Mary's from a very strong field of candidates we identified and who expressed an interest in joining us.

"Alan has a strong track record and impressed us with his vision, commitment and ambition.

"We look forward to working with him."

Pardew has already achieved two promotions in his managerial career – with Reading and West Ham – and also led the Hammers to a dramatic FA Cup final defeat on penalties against Liverpool in 2006.

He has also taken both the Royals and the Hammers to play-off finals, losing in 2001 and 2004 respectively.

The former Crystal Palace player could meet the squad today and will be at St Mary’s watching from the stands for tomorrow’s pre-season friendly with Ajax – alongside Liebherr, who is paying his first visit since buying the club.

Stewart Henderson will continue as caretaker boss to oversee the Ajax game with Pardew set to start work with his new charges on Monday.

Pardew is Saints' 15th manager in as many years and succeeds Mark Wotte, who was sacked last Thursday a day after Liebherr's takeover of the club was completed.

Saints' ticket office will stay open late tonight until 8pm because of the expected rush for tickets for tomorrow's Ted Bates Trophy game following news of Pardew's imminent arrival.

In my opinion this is a sound appointment. He suits the situation we are in perfectly -managed in both the lower divisions and the Premiership with some success. He has been given a good length contract which will provide continuity and a chance to build HIS team. If I have a worry, and it is very small one, it is that I hope he has maintained his football contacts and player awareness whilst out of the game. For those posters who will say later today 'what about Charlton' I would say that we dont know what was going behind the scenes and it is time for us ALL to move on! Good luck Alan Pardew.

A few of us will be dissappointed with that as we probably thought and hoped that WGS was coming back. But thinking about it, Mr Pardew is pretty good choice. If we start poor though it's gonna be because he's only had 2 weeks to prepare so us fans need to be just a little more patient.

well it is a good signing and Alan was always a better choice than Adam thats for sure. Just hope he see from Sat the amount of work and rebuilding that is ahead of him. We need a big strong side to get out of this division and platers who can play and also can get stuck in and earn the right to play thier football. We really need two dominant center halves and strong midfield and a quality striker. Oli Lanchasher is a very poor player and just not up to the job at any standard and we need to be far better than him and a few others. Thank you Marcus for saving our club and I just hope you really understand we do now need significant investment to have any chance of the play offs thats for sure

Now it's on the OS and TV news that Pardew has been appointed the only thing to say is thank goodness the speculation is all over.

I wonder how all those 'punters' who put money on a certainty to return feel now. Pardew wasn't even being mentioned until late on.

Best thing about this whole sorry scenario is that Markus Liebherr and his advisors have shown that they are business men who can conduct themselves out of the spotlight unlike Lowe. I particularly liked the comment that ML had been committed to buying the club since he visited SMS and saw the potential in late May.

Hopefully there will be a place for or some recognition for Leon Crouch who put in a large amount of money and without whom the club would have been liquidated.

We all owe him a debt of gratitude.

Onwards and Upwards!

Not overwhelmed by this appointment, but he ticks most of the boxes for me. His last tenure at Charlton is not unlike the Managers who took over here recently. Second rate players on Premiership contracts that couldn't give...well you know the rest.
Hopefully at this level he will bring a blend of youth and experience, and be his own man. The squad is depleted and will need some additions - they will be his team, and they will play for him (hopefully).
I hope we can look forward to a positive period of decent football, varied tactics to suit the game and winning a few!
Good luck Alan Pardew - first job is to axe a couple of Poles, and bring in a proven goalscorer at this level.

I don't think that Alan Pardew is a bad choice. He has good experience at lower and higher level. I am hoping that his contract has incentives enough to keep him here and stay for many a year.
I hope that the back biting doesn't start and that we ALL get behind Alan and his team.
As for Alan's footballing style, I am sure he realises that our club demands an attractive style. Anyone who comes in and thinks that Saints fans will accept the long ball game won't last 5 minutes. I am not sure what style Alan will adopt but this is my plea to him that we try to play decent football.

He is the type of manager who can thrive at this club, knows how to play good football and how to mix it up when needs be. He's also likely to be loyal to us if we are to him. My worry of a higher profile appoitment would have been someone who would jump ship as soon as a biiger club came knocking...with this guy we may just have stability for a change. Pardew looks crap:

Charlton Athletic
Pardew's absence from management lasted less than two weeks when he was appointed manager of Charlton Athletic on Christmas Eve 2006, signing a three-and-a-half year contract. He took over with Charlton in 19th place in the Premier League, with just 12 points and a –20 goal difference, the lowest in the league. Although Charlton's form improved under Pardew, he was unable to keep Charlton up, resulting in the first relegation of his career, both as a player and manager.

Many expected Charlton to bounce back from relegation into the Premier League with signings such as Chris Iwelumo and Luke Varney in the 07/08 season. But Charlton failed to mount a serious promotion challenge and finished the season in 11th. This put Pardew under pressure going into the 08/09 season but Charlton started the season off well with victories over Reading and Swansea. Although Charltons' form very quickly deteriorated and they were near the foot of the table and after 8 games without a win and a 5-2 home defeat to Sheffield United on 22 November 2008, Pardew parted company with Charlton by mutual consent.

with the finances behind us, its time to spend a little cash....We haven't won a pre-season friendly against RUBBISH TEAMS !!!!!

Gordon Strachan (ok many of us didn't think he was a good appointment when he came, but he was, perhaps Pardew could prove us wrong, but I am sick of all that, the little ginger man has a PROVEN track record at Saints (second in the Prem at Christmas 2003 - wanted to sign a younng Drogba et al, F.A Cup Final etc).... hands in the pocket time...... fans would be elelated and give him the money to buy a new TEAM !!!!!!!!! Pay him what he is worth to get us back to the Prem for the LONG TERM. Let him sign the players he wants !!!!!!!

I think we will be thrashed by Ajax and our new away kit looks rubbish, everyone knows it should be all yellow 'YELLOW YELLOW !!! '

Would be such a lift to see him walk out with our wonderful new owner thank God he saved our club, now he needs people to advise him properly, no more half arsed appointments, get Strachan, pay the wages and give him a decent budget for players, otherwise its looking like we will be lucky to stay in Division 3....

I have no issues with Alan as Manager, I would have liked wGS but AP would have been my second choice.

He first action MUST be to get the players FIT, at the moment most of them stop playing around the 70 min mark when they run out of stream. (Double training sessions next week please).

He must also get in some new players who will give 110% in games.
We especially need somebody with pace up front as the balance of the team is not right, there are too many one-pace players.

Good choice - seem to remember on Tuesday some smarter people (tnan me) were predicting AP.
This is a man who knows ho to manage teams looking for promotion. He did a great job at Reading before Coppell and then at West Ham before it all went a bit sour.
Well done Alan and welcome to SFC!

Overall, pretty happy with Pardew. He’s got form at this level with Reading and then got West Ham playing some really good football on their way to the cup final. Ok, things went pretty badly for him at Charlton, but they were / are in a bit of a mess.

His over the top celebrations in the front of Wenger was classic and I thought the “absolutely rapes him” comment on MOTD2 was genius.

It will be interesting to see if he makes any changes to the backroom staff. I’d imagine he’ll be given a few quid to strengthen to squad so hopefully this is the start of a new dawn for us.

Just think about it all.

How rare is this situation for a football club!!

New owners, fully capable of refinancing a whole new team.

A new manager with proven experience and who has clearly excited the fans by his apointment.

No debt problems.

New structure within the club. We' re picking the best as we go along.

A fantastic ground.

If it wasn't for the ten point deduction we would be the most envied club in England.

I just hope I don't wake up in a minute and someone tells me I'm dreaming.

I have no idea why a Football club can mean so much to people. But it does .. and this just gets better and better.

You memory must be going. I suggest you go and read ITN pages 262 to 282 again because the FACTs do not support your statement.

I remember a 7-2 thrashing. I remember a number of 1-0 wins just before he left against the likes of Leicester, Boro and ManCity WHERE WE HAD ONE SHOT AT GOAL in the whole 90mins against a number of better chances for the oppo.

The team in his last game (17 March 2001)was :-
Jones, El Khalej, Wayne, Dan P, Claus, Richards, Oaks, Marion, BT, Draper, Tessam.

wGS team 18 months later included :-
Antti, Jason/Telfer, Killer, Fab, Brett, Svensson, Marsdon.

I only hope he has been taking some media lessons. The "He's a strong boy, he absolutely rapes him" gaffe on MOTD was class, but I hope we don't get a repeat of him calling his clubs fans "w***ers" who "should all f*** off" like he did at West Ham when manager there.

When Pardew had underdog teams i.e West Ham-v- Man U,Liverpool Chelsea etc OR a weal Charlton side who were up against it, then OF COURSE he played a cagey containing type of game. Whe he had a superior team like the Reading promotion teams he played a positive pressing game scoring a hat full of goals. Unfortunately most fans are pretty deluded about how their teams should play against the big boys. IMO give Pardew the tools and he will do a good job.

Admittedly I would have liked Strachan, but Pardew is a good choice (and at the end of the day it is Liebherr's decision) and I will fully support him this season. He has a good record. Yes he was a good manager but we where a good club that gave him a chance to re-incarnate his career. He well and truly shafted us at the end of season to pander to the whim of Spurs. Excellent news at last. A very sound choice, and a realistic one.
He's not the most charismatic or flamboyant of managers but he's a got a good pedigree as wanting to play decent football and isn't a kick-and-rush merchant like some of the names bandied about.
Forget Charlton, they've been through turbulent times, too, remmeber what a hot property he was at Reading and in his initial period at West Ham (both of them "footballing" clubs like Saints).
Just the sort of steady hand to rebuild our club and get us back into the Premiership in three years.
Could have seen it coming over the past few days as his odds on Skybet went from 40-1 to 25s and yesterday down to 16. Someone must have known!!
Thank you Herr Liebherr for the second bit of good news this month.
We're on the way back. COYR

I think every Saints fan should be over the moon with this appointment.
As a club at the foot of League One who little more than a week ago were about to disappear, we are very lucky to have a Manager who has secured:
2 championship promotions
2 play off finals
An FA cup final

not the appointment that i was hoping for but steady. Think rather than mess Charlton he kept Charlton where they were longer than other managers would of.Again a manager strapped by a club without money. Will reserve judgement, should do well at this level with money to spend.i still think we need six ro seven players very quickly if we want to get out of the division. Or have a hope of doing so. Should have contacts to bring good players to the club at this level.
Fingers crossed.COYR

I'd just like to say well done to all concerned and I'm also pleased the mood on here is so supportive - I was half expecting a mini riot if we didn't get WGS.

And I'd also like to say, in defence of the Echo, that this story would have been written last night and then set on a timer to appear on the website first thing this morning. Good choice. Experienced at all levels, relatively young and won't take any BS from players. As said before remember we are League 1 on minus 10 and as such this Pardew is a good catch. WGS? Well a lot of us didn't like it when he took over and he did alright didn't he?
The single most important thing is that we now have stable ownership and with that will come stability throughout the club. These are happy times, given what we've been through so even if it is against some peoples nature can everyone who's moaning just stop for a bit and give everyone in the club a chance to build us back up? Finally, thank the big man that we didn't go with the donkey-skate hybrid Adams. Marcus (or his people probably) must be tuning in to what we want. Happy Days.

I wonder how Rupert is feeling watching from the sidelines. No doubt he is calculating his losses and getting worked up about our new owner who actually knows how to run a football club something Rupert never got the hang of despite his years of prctice.

All the Lowe luvvies have disappeared as have those who said that administration was the wrong thing for the club.

Well it has been a horrid ten years or more but now we have a sound owner, agood management team, and a great team manager. Now all we need to do is to strengthen the team with two or three signings, a decent left back, a good centre half and a strong centre forward. That will do nicely as they used to say.

Add to all of our joy the Skates demise and their worries and you will know how happy I am.

lets just hope he gets half a dozen players in very soon with experience in the lower leagues, good old pros that can mix it. problem last couple of seasons was too many lightweights who thought they had made it.....name and shame, mcgoldrick, wright phillips, etc and we had too many on high wages just going through the motions, rasiak, euell, scatchal etc, we def need a leader in the middle of park, a strong burly centre forward and a no nonsense centre half, plus a couple more, add these to a few promising youngsters and we're half way there, but its going to be a long road. pardew's got 3 years, thats what it'll take just to get out of this league, then we have to look at it again and rebuild for the next 3 years......patience for all i feel.

If anyone was in any doubt that he was the right man for the job, look at the motto he devised for the team when he was at Reading: "Tenacity, Spirit and Flair" - that sounds just like the spirit of the Saints to me. And bear in mind it was his groundwork (with Graeme Murty as his captain) that made Reading the power they became with Coppell at the helm!!
And he mamanged to get Arsene Wenger to lose his cool, as well. Not many people can say that.

Disregarding the sentiment for WGS, Hoddle deserted Saints for his dream job at Spurs! The dream turned into a nightmare!
Keegan had two bites of the cherry at Newcastle, and neither was a triumph because although he had the right temperament as a footballer, he did not have it as a manager! Another dream job that turned into a nightmare!

Great News. Alan Pardew. Splendid. A "recognised" manager at last!

But, this can’t be the same Alan Pardew who on BBC TV once complained, “foreign owners were running the game”? Still, one can never tell the amnesiac effects of a spell of unemployment!

Welcome Mr Pardew, to the Southampton managerial carousel. Now do hold on very tight now, this appointment is not for feint-hearted. How can I put this without causing offenc? Please don’t go out buying some fancy house and the like, we Saints’ have a reputation for speedy dismissals to protect.

However, having read your remarks following your departure from Reading, Charlton Athletic and West Ham we can be reassured in knowing that should the likely outcome, here at ST Mary’s, not be to your liking then it would be none of your fault. It might be that of the owner, the CEO, the Board, the grounds men, the mascot even; but none of it will be your fault.

And you’re 48 to morrow!

It could have been worse; it could have John Gregory, for who the phrase “Whinging Pom” was invented!

I disagree, I think its a great appointment and 2 seasons ago it would have been easier to get an appointment like this. I think we all need to look at the facts, we a re in League 1 on minus 10 points. Its not really that attractive is it? I am glad we have someone like Pardew and will forget about his record at charlton, his record at west ham and reading was first class, march the saints on mr pardew
Yeah you are it is a good appointment for the place where the club is at, at the moment. It just still worries me a little that the more recent times in his managerial career have not reached the heights of the early parts of it and in his last couple of months at West Ham and then all the time he was at Charlton he didn`t win very many games at all. When a manager is not wining games and you have just had him appointed manager of your team then it has to cause at very least some slight concern.

Like others, I only hope he is the man to pull in the right kind of players we so desparately need.

Leroy Lita could be a good choice, he knows Pardew and is free at the mo.
We really need a creative central midfielder, a winger that can actually cross a ball, two solid centre halves and someone that will score 30 plus goals in the 40 plus games next season.

I will reserve judgement until the 31st August after seeing what new players we bring in and early results we get!

For those querying Pardews record.

With Reading his Win% was 48.11%

W 102
L 57
D 53

With West Ham his Win% was 41.10%
G 163
W 67
L 58
D 38

And finally with Charlton

Win% 31.46%
G 89
W 28
L 35
D 26

Let us compare that with Strachan

Coventry
Win% 32.55%
G 215
W 70
L 89
D 56

Southampton
Win% 35.45%
G 110
W 39
L 39
D 32

Celtic
Win% 67.03%
G 182
W 122

Draw your own conclusions from that as you will, but bear this in mind; even Tony Adams could probably win 50% of games were he managing Celtic

Very happy with Pardew, I think it's a solid appointment. Although he wasn't top of my wish list, it's a lot better than it could have been. Now hopefully some sensible transfers will be coming in, and we can really start moving forward. Wish I could be there tomorrow.

27,000+ for a friendly game skate. You couldn't even do that in the Prem in 2 games.

You don't even have a fan base of 27,000

Hopefully we can now keep Euell, John, Saga and Rasiak (if they want to stay). That strike force should be too good for Lge 1 defenders.

Alternatively, how aboot trying to get Beckford (Leeds), Lester (Chesterfield) or Reid (Rotherham). All proven goalscorers at lower league, and with the possible exception of Lester) still fairly young.

Pards has been appointed by the representitives of a of our new owner based on vision and credentials to get the job done.

He doesn't read to me to be the sort of guy that will tolerate people letting him down or telling him what to do least of all wowsers reading other teams threads.

For once the Echo poll is in the right place the support for Alan is there, showing the fans are coming together. By the time St Marys fills tonight and you get to feel the electricity of what's happened at Saints you'l know it's big and very special.

The hard times and bs of the past are gone. The task ahead is for everyone to support the new owner, to repay the faith he has in the fans to do their part in getting Saints back to the prem.. not by jeering or slagging the set backs on the way and looking for blame but by cheering all the way.

We have some very promising young players with a few experienced lads in the core. Alan will add to tighten from the back and add a someone up front for the fans to scream and shout for.

I'd like to congratulate young Morgan for his work with his nations young side and welcome him back. Under Alan this guy could be a real star on the way to our fortunes.

Whatever he does or does not do this whole season get behind him and the team.. don't go soft at half time (Xmas)

This is a new era for Saints with a clean slate for Alan!
He needs and must demand 110% positivity from his coaching staff to the board and from the fans.

The positivity is there at the moment, it's in the air and the expectations... feel it, believe in it and for goodness sake get out there and cheer loud and proud.

Go for it Alan you're the man!

Whatever he does or does not do this whole season get behind him and the team.. don't go soft at half time (Xmas) This is a new era for Saints with a clean slate for Alan! He needs and must demand 110% positivity from his coaching staff to the board and from the fans. The positivity is there at the moment, it's in the air and the expectations... feel it, believe in it and for goodness sake get out there and cheer loud and proud. Go for it Alan you're the man!

I have read all of the posts on all the threads, yes there is new optimism in Southampton and also the far flung, we will be patient and yes we will support our team and I mean from the top (boardroom, manager and the team) to the bottom (supporters) united in our belief that we are finally on the right road and going in the right direction, as fans we have to be very patient, it will not happen overnight, we will have times that we will moan about, that is what makes football what it is, just remember where we were going in the last few years (down) and even further down, so far this management team has done just about everything right, so far, as I have said there will be setbacks but that is inevetible, I believe that this management will only get better and better and that the city will be proud of it's football club and everything that goes with that, it has been said in many walks of life that you have to suffer before you get rewards, now bring it on, we have the makings to be great once again.

PS Why is it that this site gets taken over every night by a load of rubbish, if you want to take the p1ss out of our neighbours fine, but for gods sake don't get dragged down to that level, keep it to yourselves, you are the only ones who enjoy that cr@p.

I was pleased to hear of Alans appointment as our Manager.

He's got the fight, the passion, the vision, the strength in character, the hunger, the right experience and is the right age.

I think he will make some wise signings as he'll know what's required to get us out of this league.

I wish to thank Markus on behalf of fans who are no longer with us for his vision and investment in our dreams. Without Markus...it could have been far worse and we have a secure future!.

Unfortunately, I am unable to attend...(cost of fuel etc) but the knowledge that Markus will be there fills me with happiness.

I do hope fans can attend to celebrate tomorrows game as it will be such a key turning point in our clubs history.

I wish I could go...but that's life!. So, I hope everyone has a great day. Please stand tall and sing for our club.

What a difference from a few weeks back!.

Southampton forever in my HEART!.

Lol...

is there a Saint Chat Room?

The diff between chat rooms and forum threads is that the etiquette of forums and notice-boards is you stay on subject in order to have debate or state opinions.

Bit of banter is fun though, so long as everyone realises it's fun not personal.

Pubs are much better for banter though. Last time in a UK pub got my pic taken with my arm around a Spurs fan.. was made to regret it too haha.
Never drank so much whisky in the afternoon.

Enjoy the game.. any guesses as to the score?

Invidia's had too many prawn sandwiches of late! One of the most enjoyable things about football is the banter. My best mate is Chelsea through and through and we give each other loads of stick. Its fun even though I have been on the receiving end so many times in the last few years.

can't see invidia being a skate. bantered with him on and off for over a year on here over real club issues. Yeah okay we get a couple of skate wallies on here. Yet not everyone who disagrees on here with what one or two of you say is a skate.
i have supported this team for 45 years.
Yeah things are looking up and we have a club and we are grateful. Yet for some of us the jury is out on our new manager and whilst we will support and encourage him and the team one or two of us have reservations on him.
Whilst accepting we have have to be realistic as to the manager and players that will come to us.
In relation to the dump pit down the road they have had four years of superiority in the last fifty, let them have their fun, it won't last much longer.
