Serina Weeks jailed for benefit fraud

SHE escaped a jail term despite stealing thousands from a pre-school, depriving children of school trips and new play equipment.

Serina Weeks didn’t even have to pay back the full £13,235 she stole, some of which was spent on a holiday to Gran Canaria, after an appeal court ruled in her favour.

But just three months later the 36-yearold was back to her old ways – this time pocketing more than £12,000 in fraudulent benefit claims.

Now known as Serina Barker, she wrongly claimed income support, housing and council tax benefits over an 11-month period.

Today she is behind bars after the weeping mother of four went back before the same judge who sentenced her for her initial theft, and he locked her up for 34 weeks.

Barker, of Langrish Road, Southampton, was told she had blown her second chance as Judge John Boggis QC branded her a benefit cheat and sent her down.

Barker had pleaded guilty to three counts of failing to tell authorities about a change of circumstances.

Southampton Crown Court heard that when she signed on for the benefits in 2004 she told the Department for Work and Pensions that she was a single mother- of-three.

But three years later she failed to notify the department that she had married Keith Barker, with whom she has a tenmonth- old baby. He left her last December.

Barker’s defence barrister Roderick Blain said her offence was “unsophisticated”

and she made no attempt to hide the fact she was living with Mr Barker.

He said she was saddled with debts of £30,000 when she split with a former partner and had not seen the benefit of any money earned by Mr Barker who, he said, lived like a bachelor.

Mr Blain said Barker did not spend her benefit money on an “extravagant lifestyle” but on keeping her children afloat.

He said she had already begun to repay her fraudulent claims at £100 a month.

Judge Boggis told Barker her position had been made “more serious”

as the offending started shortly after admitting the Oaktrees Preschool thefts.

“At that stage I gave you a chance because I was concerned for your family,” he said.

“But you haven’t taken that chance.” Judge Boggis told her she had left court last time with a warning ringing in her ears that she faced prison if she offended again.

“If you won’t learn you must face the consequences,” he said.

Passing a sentence of 18 weeks for the benefit fraud and 16 weeks for breach of her earlier suspended sentence he said: “There is no proper alternative for someone who continues to offend in this dishonest way.”

A Department for Work and Pensions spokeswoman said: “No one should think they can get away with benefit theft. As Serina Barker found out, people who commit benefit fraud face fines, imprisonment and other penalties.”

Serina this sounds a much better way to achieve success and you didnt even get in that much trouble. Thanks for the tip.

How stupid can one person be? She should think herself lucky, she didn't get sent down for the first offence. Judge Boggis (known as Bang Um Up Boggis) rarely lets anyone off. Mind you having said that 17 weeks in jail for 12 grand, nice work if you can get it, I bet she stops paying the money as well.

I think that your comments are a bit OTT. I do though agree that all cheats should be punished, just look at what has happened at the other end of the scale, ie; MP's cheating us out of much higher amounts of money and then telling us, 'it was an honest mistake', or 'it was an oversight', etc etc, would the judge dealt with this woman any differently if she had said the same in her defence? I doubt it!! One rule for one and another rule for another. TV adverts telling us that someone is watching you if you're a benefit cheat but who are watching those who make the rules?

Wait for the appeal court to go in her favour again. I give it two weeks and she will be out. Most of us know someone who is claiming benefit when they should not, but whats the point of saying anything when you know nothing gets done.Even her solicitor would have been paid for by us the taxpayer. These dobbers never learn their lesson.

It is so easy for the public to help themselves with such easy pickings in this country. These people should NEVER be employed again where there is money or a till in sight. The serious factor is these people do not have a conscience. My mum was widowed when 34 with children and she did every job from cleaning, taking in ironing and she use to stipulate that we left the home tidy when she got back home. Now look at the lazy has beens, and as mentioned the kids will suffer - who would invite them into their home in case they have their mother's light fingers. May I say the MPs who were light fingered should also not be employed where money is.

I make no apologies for my comments and don't believe they are OTT. The fact is, this woman deliberately claimed benefits she was not entitled to. Those benefits are paid for, by the majority, that unfortunately have to share a society with people like this. This 'something for nothing' attitude that seems to be prevailing in our culture, sickens me.
MPs should be treated in the exact same way as this fraudster. Unfortunately, in their defence, the rules (admittedly written by themselves) save them from the full force of the law and we cannot expect them to face trial in the same manner. But thats another topic...

maybe i was a bit OTT for claiming that you were OTT, for that i apologise.
I thoroughly agree that there are too many like this woman getting a free ride, too many claiming anything thats going, people who have put little or nothing in yet see it as their right to milk the system. I am in my 60's and worked most of my life and paid my dues, after suffering a heart attack 2 years ago I received the princely sum of £1.27 for a period of 6 weeks sickness. How do these people get away with it, how do they know how to play the system, who advises them.....it does really make my blood boil. Stop all benefits tomorrow and the queues at the job centre would be a mile long full of all of these shirkers.

Well there wouldn't be if this was a proper insurance scheme, e.g. 1 years work for 1 month's unemployment insurance. If you aren't insured, there could be an absolute minimum living allowance, or the workhouse.

But this situation of having 4 kids and being able to claim enough different benefits to live a pretty good life style is just sickening to those of us who get up and work every day for our families. This should be a source of shame to the claimants, as far as I am concerned.

There's no way I ever wanted to claim benefits but I had no choice.

What I did do was to use the opportunity to go back to college as I only had to pay the administration fee for the course.

As soon as my son started school I managed to find a 5 day a week part time job, a weekend evening bar job whilst still completing the 3rd year of my accountancy course.

People like Serina give us all a bad name.

I hated every minute of needing to claim benefits but decided to use it as the short term helping hand that I believe it is meant to be.

I speak on many people who know this fraudster and this is just the tip of the fraud and theft she has done to date. Ripping off the state is one thing but her actions with the playschool were shameful as the whole playschool was in jeopardy of closing down! She clearly has no conscience and I don't think for one minute that she will learn her lesson as she is known to have stolen from every place she has worked at whilst still claiming benefits. The money taken from the playschool funded a people carrier, more than 1 luxury holiday, shopping sprees, clubbing at weekends etc and other activities which even people working can't enjoy !! I would also question where exactly she is spending her sentence - have the children gone with her? I have been told she has put in a request to be in a mother and baby unit so the youngest child is with her. Oh so caring !!!!!!! So many unanswered questions, no apology to the playschool etc. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THIS THIEF THE SYMPATHY VOTE. SHE KNEW SHE WAS DOING WRONG AND CONTINUED TO THINK SHE WAS ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE GAME, EVEN GIVEN THE FACT THAT THE JUDGE HAD WARNED HER !!!

People like this totally disgust me. What name is she going to use next to deceive others and please don't tell me when she's out she will be entitled to benefits again ! There is nothing at all which excuses her behaviours and I think her punishment should have been longer. Perhaps she should have also been given community service to work at the playschool and scrub the toilets out etc to try and start paying back some of what she took. She should never have been let off the first time. There are plenty of others out there doing it too - wouldn't be surprised if they have their little "community" site on the net somewhere sharing ideas on how to cheat the system! I bet she never thought in a million years she would be up against the same Judge - perhaps that alone is justice cos he had already warned her. The only thing she should be signing now are her release papers from prison and certainly no more applications for benefits !!!!!!

The answer to this is simple. The British benefis culture that has plagued Britain, has produced people who have lost all forms of self-respect. Governments have produced policies that have led to the decline of social-mobility in society. Instead of working to a plan, people on benefits just sit back and take these benefits, and those without self -respect try to play the system. We have a welfare state in exces of £100bn annually, and it is something that we can no longer afford. Even
MPs, who have taken expenses that they were not entitled to, have lost such self-respect, a sign of a wretched Britain.

I make no apologies for my comments and don't believe they are OTT. The fact is, this woman deliberately claimed benefits she was not entitled to. Those benefits are paid for, by the majority, that unfortunately have to share a society with people like this. This 'something for nothing' attitude that seems to be prevailing in our culture, sickens me. MPs should be treated in the exact same way as this fraudster. Unfortunately, in their defence, the rules (admittedly written by themselves) save them from the full force of the law and we cannot expect them to face trial in the same manner. But thats another topic...
there is no difference what so ever between the goverment & what serina done. the goverment stole more thousands of pounds more than serina did. so why not charge them & lock them all up to. it just goes to prove that one rule for us & another rule for them. the children will be well looked after & loved.
The children will probably be well looked after cos our money is probably stashed away under a mattress somewhere ready for when social services hand them back when her sentence is over. And you're right, there is no difference between her and MPs expenses scandal because MUD STICKS and hopefully people will steer clear of this woman and remember all the harm and upset she caused to those innocent people at the playschool !!!!
