Fluoride campaigner John Spottiswoode in challenge for John Denham’s seat

HE has led the fight to stop fluoride being added to Hampshire’s water.

Now John Spottiswoode is to challenge Government minister John Denham for his place in Parliament.

Mr Spottiswoode, chairman of Hampshire Against fluoridation, wants to turn the vote into the referendum on fluoridation that has so far been denied to the 200,000 people in and around the city affected by it.

He has been selected as the Green Party candidate for the Southampton Itchen seat at the next general election, which must be held by June 3 next year.

He will also come up against Southampton City Council deputy leader Royston Smith, who will be standing as the Conservative candidate.

Mr Spottiswoode said: “Clearly there are many other issues of importance in a general election and the Greens have substantial policies on all of these.

“However, the big issue in Southampton of putting a known toxin in our water against our will goes to the heart of our democracy and what our politicians should do.

“What right does anyone have to force anyone else to drink what is widely considered to be a poison?

“Further, by what right does an unelected health quango have to decide to add fluoride to our drinking water when a massive 72 per cent rejected the idea in the public consultation, despite the authorities running a very biased pro-fluoride campaign?”

Mr Spottiswoode, a married father-of-four who was a county councillor in Suffolk before moving to Southampton, said that the man he is challenging is one of those responsible for fluoridation being approved for Hampshire.

Mr Denham, the Government’s Communities Secretary, has consistently said that he agrees with fluoridation as a principle.

However, earlier this year he changed his stance to say that although he personally believes it is the right thing to do, the scheme should be put on hold until it can be shown that the public agrees with adding fluoride to tap water.

Cllr Smith is opposed to fluoride being added to Hampshire tap water and has also backed the Daily Echo’s calls for a referendum on the issue.

he would do better in going for southampton north and romsey, here he might get a chance to get elected. than to take on itchen, if the greens stand in itchen or test all they will do is let the torys win, and the torys will not take any notice of the green party, they treat them has a joke.

Citizens have wised up to this poison dumped in our water systems. That is why fluoridation loses in 80% of the elections held.
There is no other example of forced medication, where people must take a drug against their will every day of their lives. Even if it were of value to children's teeth, 50% of all you take accumulated in the bones, the thyroid, the brain and the joints. Research shows the result for childen is a fivefold increase in bone cancer, lowered IQ, and enamel damage. In the elderly other cancers, thyroid destruction and boken hips due to brittle bones. I would much rather have a nuclear submarine in Southampton's Waters than fluoride, the former is much the safer option.

people can vote for who ever they like, but i would not worry about the socialist losing there deposits in the test and itchen constituency's, they will have way to many votes for that and will be above the libs and greens, and have a very good chance off getting a seat or two, people who have not voted since voting for blair the first time are ready to vote again because of the socialist party is going to stand this time round for the first time, they also know they are getting the backing from the unions, it will only take one socialist mp to send a shock wave though the house of commons, from a place like southampton where it swing to one side to the other, to make government to stop and start listen to what the people want and not what they think what the people want, and a message is what is needed. dont you think.

People thought they were voting Socialist when they voted Labour. I don't think they will want to know about Socialists any more.

The Green Party would be like a breath of fresh air. Try checking out their website.

i had check out the greens web site, Rob444, Southampton, a lot of people could of voted for them last time but did't because they are not socialist, but this time people know, that the socialist party stand for what it is a socialist party. a people party, and not a like the capitalist labour thats why its got the nick name nu-labour. we waiting on the CNWP to make up its mind on what its doing.

I reckon the only shock waves are going to be in the public bar of the Scargill Arms as all the Socialists realise they have lost all their deposits. Joking aside the SP does offer a real ideological choice to voters which is good, but there is a still a bit of hiding under bushels. The Socialist party sounds like a traditional Marxist manifesto hidden behind an anti EU ticket because let's face it if they won a real majority it would be the politics of Bob Crow that we'd get, not St. Tony of Benn.

i am killing my self laughing here on the bit st tony of benn. wonder if he knows he been promoted above his old tittle lord. lol, sorry i find that very funny, but bob crow was very middle road type person, and only ended up being left centre because he got push in to corner by the government, but your getting the socialist party mix up with the socialist working party, it was the rmt that made the first steps in getting the very first socialist party (labour party) going all them years ago, and now they are doing the same history repeating it self a little bit, just this time they will have learned there lessions, yes i know that the name socialist do sound a bit like the marxist, but what else could you call a party made from the people, by the people, for the people, after all socialism is for the ordinary people and not just the uk all over the world, and they do well working with each other, they dont need a things like the EU to work with each other.
its like i said before and other have said it, if we leave the EU it dont mean we stop trading with them, one thing people are learning and learning fast now, is that the uk dont need the EU, but the EU needs us. if we stay in the EU then expect the lisbon treaty to be enforce on us, like what they are doing to eire they voted no to it, but the EU whats eire to have another vote, and they will keep on telling eire to vote till they got a yes vote, i can see them soon to leave the EU, because it not gone down to well with them, and one of the things the green party wants is to stay in the EU, even lo the socialist never wanted to join the EU in the first place, but they are willing to give the people the vote on the EU, and it would a country wide majority, unlike it was when ted heath took us in to the EU, that was done by block count, i can under stand why it was done by block counting its easy and a lot quicker, specially when it had to be counted 3 times to make sure there was no errors in counting.

Is that the same Tony Benn who decided to relocate a car factory to Glasgow to get Labour votes when all the experts told him to keep it in the West Midlands?

Anything to get Labour out must be a good thing. The country can't afford them. We've had 12 years old plunder, ask anyone with a pension about that.

As for the EU, it's a worker's paradise. Only an idiot (like Neil Kinnock) would vote against it then rake in all the rewards from it.

OK, so a dentist looks into a childs mouth and doesn't like what he sees
ie; black teeth. Well, on changing the air filter on my car at the weekend, - i was not too happy with what i saw, - 'black soot', and in all the 53 years that have been servicing my own vehicles, it has never as bad as this. It is of coarse, due to the increasing numbers of Diesel engined cars / lorries on our roads today. Similarly, my wife runs a damp cloth along her clothes line to the bottom of the garden, and yes, - there it is again 'black soot.
Who said "Smoking kills", surely
this ingestion of carbon into our lungs has got to be as bad or even worse, in the long term for our children's health.
Tackling the problem however, may not be that easy, as the oil Barons rule everything.

Waysider, West End 72 nice inning's i hope you carry on for another 72 years. but i noticed that to on my last filter change, there do seem to be more black carbon in the filter, and i am no where near driving has much has i use to.

condor man make that 30 years of plunder, has for the EU its not a workers paradise never has been, its all ways been about the rich man, to make more money. thats why the torys wanted in the EU so badly back under ted heath, when he lead the tory party way back then in the 60's and early 70's, do you remember now.

That is a very interesting observation that reminds me of a piece of work I did earlier in my career for a sadly defunct company called ( Wellworthy's in partnership with Ricardo Consulting engineers over in Shoreham (remember them?). We concluded that although diesels did indeed emit more particulate emissions (black smoke in other words) the actual harm done by this was less than what could not be seen ie the gases, especially the nitrous oxides. In fact the NOxs were far more dangerous than the hydrocarbons so although diesels were smellier and smokier, strangely they were actually less "dangerous" to humans than the petrol engines. Funny old world but a good observation Waysider

I'm sure with the Tory swing, barring a political miracle, John Denham's days are numbered anyway. Unfortunately this leaves us with Royston. A prospect I, along with other people who have had personal dealings with him, am not too thrilled about.

I won't vote Green because they have b&gger all idea about policies and strategies other than green issues. It's like voting for Esther Ranzen, you might get good consumer advice but that's it! ;) whilst it's entertaining to have these people in Parliament, people soon tire of them, look at Martin Lewis and others before/after him.....

If the Labour party insist on bringing in the changes in the disability arena/benefits that they are proposing I can truly say that will be it as far as I'm concerned after a lifetime of voting Labour.

I will look forward to see how many votes the SP gets (won't get mine, I'm not an idealistic student any more who thinks that the workers will unite bla bla bla), my guessing it won't be very many, especially as you've advocated tactical voting in the first post on here Southy!

Unfortunately I live in AW constituency and he's not getting my vote this time but neither are the Tories!

We may not live right in the area freemantlegirl2,but we are entitled to a opinion on things.
While this may not directly affect us at this moment,if it
goes ahead it could well do in the future.
You're entitled to your opinions about the New Forest area where I live,I don't mind that, this is just a place where we chat over things,I don't suppose what any of us says on here makes a blind bit of difference, but at least give me the chance to stick my five eggs in without getting so annoyed,I sure don't mean to annoy anyone but feel i've a right to comment.
I don't expect you to agree but that's what free speech is about.

the idea freematle is to kick the labour pary up the rear to get them to start listening and to work for the people, and if that dont work, then the sp will be here to stay, and work for the ordinary people get things done, but to be truthful about it, i can not see the labour party going back to supporting the ordinary people, because they been refusing to take any notice of the unions warnings. and at this moment the they at talking about all unions with drawing the support to the labour party and start supporting the sp (the tuc meeting is happening now in liverpool), i have to be there this friday, so i would guess that this tackle vote will become a full blown affair. i will know the result of the vote early hours in the morning, we are also waiting on the CNWP to decided what they are doing. and they need to be quick about it, because the sp is waiting on them to decide what they are doing before there is a formally decoration of sp members that will be standing at the next general election. it is possable for the sp to be elected in ruling power in government. there is massive support up in the north. even on a scargill ground, whitch was a bit of a surprise to every one. people want socialism back, but they dont want the exstream, the spot where labour use to be, and this is the area that the sp is covering.
