A PLANE carrying players from a Premier League side had to make an emergency landing after leaving Southampton Airport.
The Stoke City team were returning from a match at Saints' rivals Portsmouth in last night's Carling Cup.
Passengers on board the plane reported a burning smell inside the cabin not long after take-off and the flight was diverted to Gatwick.
The aircraft was greeted by fire appliances on landing, but no sign of any fire was found.
The Potters have a large contingent of ex-Saints players, but only defender Danny Higginbotham played in last night's 4-0 defeat.
