A TOP Southampton councillor has today said the city council would never have backed fluoridation if it had known children’s dental health had improved.
Deputy leader Cllr Royston Smith said new survey results, which show the city’s five-year-olds suffer the same amount of tooth decay as those across England, have dramatically weakened the case for fluoridation.
The survey found tooth decay among Southampton children at a ten-year low, as reported in yesterday’s Daily Echo.
The city council’s backing for the plan – affecting nearly 200,000 residents – in last year’s public consultation was seen as key to those in favour of the scheme.
Every other local authority – Hampshire, Eastleigh, New Forest and Test Valley councils – opposed the proposals.
Cllr Smith said: “The council was probably the most important consultee, and whatever we said or did was going to be taken very seriously.”
Every councillor had a free vote in November, and they backed fluoridation 26 to 18.
The report for the meeting claimed the city’s dental health was deteriorating and worse than regional and national averages.
Cllr Smith said the latest figures showing Southampton has lower levels of tooth decay than fluoridated Birmingham, are another nail in the coffin for the case for adding fluoride to the water.
“The main thrust was the poor state of dental health in Southampton, and that’s now shown not to be the case,” he said. “That, combined with the overwhelming public opposition and will of the people should be enough for the SHA to rethink their plans and abandon them.”
South Central Strategic Health Authority has said it remains committed to fluoridation.

Or could it be with an election fast approaching Royston is trying to distance himself from one of his more unpopular decisions by claiming the wool was pulled over his eyes. This bloke could teach Mandelson a thing or two about the dark arts.

Southy and mr. southampton--if you are going to slam someone at least get your facts correct (yes I know those pesky facts make life inconvenient when trying to slander someone but it does highlight your complete lack of credibility on any opinion you may have)
The vote by the council on fluoride was a free vote. Some labour councillors voted in favour, some against, some conservative councillors voted in favour, some against. The lib dems--the same.
In reality Cllr Smith voted AGAINST fluoride. Get your facts straight. You don't have to like someone, but at least either: a-get your facts correct or b-stop lying. The other option is of course that you are completely ignorant--if that is the case, I forgive you both.
ps--Personally I am against adding fluoride in water, against adding folic acid in bread, but yet I don't subscribe to any mad "theories" about it being a conspiracy to "get us all". In reality what it is is a misguided attempt by people in power (Strategic Health Authority as example) who actually believe they are trying to help people (ie--children's dental health). The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Unfortunatlely instead of factual debate I bet half the people in these comments section believe in leprechauns.
ps--feel free to now slander me with your "facts"

He didn't say "lizard", he said "salamander" and he was thinking not of the Queen but Ken Livingstone.
It's a "fact"
Anyway, it's as much a "fact" as any so-called "fact" thrown up by the silly socialists you justly berate, chide and righteously ridicule!

I can never be a Tory voter, but as a socialist believe in fairness and facts.
Vote on Fluoride was free i.e. Party whips not applied.
Tory Cllr. Royston Smith made his position against fluoridation known and explained voting against in the Council through letters page of Daily Echo.
But as far as I am aware he has not been active in campaigning against adding fluoride to drinking water, and there is no guarantee from his party to ban fluoridation of water.
It is also a fact that John Spottiswoode of Green Party who is also going to be candidate in Itchen has not only put in lots of hard work on this issues, he is also the Chair of Hampshire Against Fluoride campaign, without whose total commitment the establishment would have succeeded in killing this issue long time ago. And I think Green Party’s policy commitment is against adding fluoride to drinking water.
John Denham of New Labour on the other hand is personally in favour of adding fluoride, their party policy is unclear and he has only paid very minimum lip service to the debate. He could have done much better by telling to the guano responsible to properly follow the government's guide lines and taken guano to task for ignoring overwhelming anti fluoride concern expressed in consultation. He did no such thing.
With above info in mind if I was voter in Itchen, I will vote for Green Party candidate John Spottiswoode.

Come on councillors, be brave, do the decent thing, support the majority and pull out of this scheme.
You are here to serve the electorate, so do it.
