Marchwood Incinerator to process refuse from outside of Hampshire

WE have been betrayed and stabbed in the back.

That was the reaction of villagers after councillors agreed to bring in rubbish from outside Hampshire to be burnt at a landmark incinerator.

Furious residents in Marchwood now face even more lorries thundering along their roads as household waste is brought to the “silver dome” on the edge of Southampton Water.

Anything from dirty nappies to food packaging could be trucked in from Dorset, West Sussex and even further afield.

It reverses the original planning conditions put in place when waste giant Veolia was given permission to build the burner.

Protesters have predicted that the number of lorries using Jacobs Gutter Lane, the access route, will increase still further– and have warned of more fatalities.

A moped rider and a cyclist have died in the past six months after being involved in collisions on the busy road.

Alan Shotter, chairman of Marchwood Parish Council, said: “Marchwood has been stabbed in the back.

“I’m disappointed but not surprised that it’s been approved because the incinerator is not operating at full capacity.

“Having said it would burn rubbish from Southampton and southern Hampshire the county council is now talking about bringing it in from further afield.”

Fellow parish councillor Alison Hoare added: “We have been betrayed.

“The county council has shown a disregard for the people of Marchwood. We’ve got an incinerator, an industrial estate, a power station and a sewage works.

Residents have had enough.”

Totton South and Marchwood councillor David Harrison, who appealed for councillors to throw out the scheme, said: “Clearly we will have HGVs thundering along Jacobs Gutter Lane for years to come with all the disturbance to quality of life and safety issues. There will be more fatalities.

I am absolutely certain.”

He accused the county council of secret plans to increase the capacity of the Marchwood energy recovery facility that last year incinerated 192,000 tonnes of Hampshire waste – and generated 14 MW of electricity.

Richard Read, head of planning for the county council, said: “There will be no change in the capacity of the plant, no change in the number of lorries travelling to and from the plant nor the type of waste.

The change would be the source of waste.”

We're the deaths caused by waste lorries?

Or do I detect straw grabbing NIMBYism?

is the incinerator connected to the national grid yet? if so take all the rubbish and burn it generate power then bury the CO2 using carbon capture. Simples.

Except the CO2 has gone up the chimney CM, and into the atmosphere. Burning rubbish typically produces the following CH4 + 2O2 + 7.52N2 → CO2 + 2H2O + 7.52N2 + nasties in the waste(eg CFCs) + heat which can be used to generate steam for electricity generation). THe best form of carbon capture is simply to bury waste in the ground except Nimbies everywhere are crying "No to Landfill!" and "No to gravel extraction!" so there are no holes in which to bury the waste in the first place anyway. The noose of Nimby paralysis is choking real strategy - waste is brought to Marchwood because of Nimbyism elsewhere and councils who cave in to Nimbyism, and this is all because every Nimby group is only concerned about what happens in their neighbourhood rather than what is good for us as a whole.

It's actually irrelevant if any of the NINE deaths in the last FOUR years were caused only by waste lorries (I know that the last two were caused by lorries but can anyone tell if they were for waste?).

What is important to me as a daily cyclist along Jacob's Gutter Lane (especially as the days shorten) is that the increase in vehicles will add to the already heavy, speeding traffic on a road that has no lights, no calming measures and no 'beware of the cyclists/motorcyclis
ts' signs on problem corners.

I find it hard to make the leap of logic necessary to understand that road deaths are caused by incinerators - they are most often caused by drivers.

And can I add most local politicians are under extreme pressure from nimbyism for fear of losing their seats.

Just think how how the CO2 emissions and road deaths will increase if ABP is allowed to develop Dibden Bay!

Marchwood!

You ain't seen nothing yet!

Of course one could argue that the increase in traffic will naturally cause it to slow down.

Most of the traffic for the Dibden Bay project will go in and out via the rail link, yes, there will be plenty of container lorries, but hopefully a full duel carriageway of the A326 will sort that. Simples.

It saddens me that our councillors are opening us up as a dump - but then surely this must not be just a matter of local government, somebody knows someone who will dump their waste without a backward glance. We are so hard up we would sell our own grandmother to make a dollar or two.

Living where most of Hampshire's pollution emanates and where foreign seamen cannot go ashore without being attacked by feral youths, the waste from your area would appear to be youngsters that have been dumped, and would not be welcome in Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth or anywhere.

I was referring to the not very Bright Brite Spark who has the misfortune to live at Fawley, some distance from the delights of Stubbington.

Like Fareham, you are down-wind of Fawley, so should be aware of it!

I've been kicked out of Fawley, they didn't want any Brite Spark's over there for some reason, back in Stubbington now.

re stabbed in the back comment form local council.
No one has been dtabbed in the back this was inevetable and anyone with common sense knew this would happen. Years ago there were NFDC / HCC plans in public domain siting; transfer station, recycling plants plus incinerator, it was obvious then this was not just to deal with local rubbish.
Stabbed in the back maybe...by local councillors pretending they have the power to make choices/influences on such issues!
