Flooding closes supermarket

A Southampton supermarket has been forced to close after suffering flooding due to this morning’s heavy rainfall.

Staff at Sainsbury’s in Redcar Street, Shirley, have been forced to turn customers away after the shop was due to open at 10am this morning.

The Daily Echo understands the store suffered water damage to its stock room.

No-one was available for comment from the store.

One shopper Edward Goodall, of Shirley, said: “My wife Hazel went to the shop this morning and they were turning everyone away.

“They have probably lost a lot of stock.”

As basic it may be - over the last 50 years 'look at the water courses' - a fundemental observation where our water is going. Culverts are being constructed, water courses are being altered - ditches not cleared, listen to the people that know how we are altering the whole lanscape of our island. Large towns, large estates, concrete forecourts, motorway construction, hate to say it: we are a Nation destroyed. Money money money!!

If the report of the roof giving way is correct, it's unlikely to be due to building over water courses, is it?

No that is a Wilkinsons now.

The Sainsbury's is a relatively new build only opening about two years ago.

Quite right. Also a difference in streets; the old Sainsbury's was in the road opposite Kwik Fit; the new one is in the precinct. Of course, not that facts should interfere with posting - LOL.

Turn the freezers on full blast and hey presto - Southampton has a much needed ice rink again and everyone is happy.
