Portsmouth will no longer try to be a host city for the 2018 FIFA World Cup (From This is Hampshire)

It just keeps getting better and better.
Hopefully the next headlines to appear will be "storrie, Rednapp and Mandric jailed, portmouth f.c. thrown out of league and Fratton Park to become Walmart Superstore"

I think this is a real opportunity for southampton as i think there has to be a venue in the South-east outside london.

They were mentioning a potential bill in the region of £24m with the lack of support from the Government/FA. Why would Southampton need or want a bill like that? I can't see a problem with Southampton being a host city for the World Cup as long as the entire cost was met by the Football Association and through the ticket prices. Why should Council Tax payers with no interest in it be lumbered with a massive bill? London taxpayers are in debt for years with the rocketing cost of the Olympic Games. How many would want that fiasco if the choice was offered today?

I personaly am not aware of the exact cost to S.F.C of a successful application.
Would seem however that anything that promotes our Global Image is probably something that The Management,as we climb the leagues,would want.
You cant sell something to the non converted if it's not in the shop window!
As one of The Faithful I'm not overly bothered if we do or dont apply but would love to see our Club revenues benefit if more support were to result

Haha - I can't believe Pompey were even thinking about bidding in the first place. Can you imagine World Cup games at Fratton Park? The entire planet would absolutelyPISS itself laughing. People in war-ravaged parts of Africa would would be crammed round a solitary tv clutching some cholera-infested glass of water saying "Man, thank god we're not there".

But we, on the other hand, definitely should bid. The whole existence of Southampton as we know it is down to its history as a port and its links with the international community. This would be a great way not only of celebrating that history but also reinforcing it and reminding potential trade partners just how big a deal Southampton is.

As my origins are in the SO postal area, I guess it must be something that I picked up in my youth Tye-Dye! At least I was not so keen to get away from the area that I relocated to outer space!

For this event to take place in our area would need the co-operation of a number of cities, because neither Portsmouth or Southampton would be able to provide all of the facilities on their own.
Each team would need their own training facilities and hotel accommodation and would not want to share, and that is before the fans arrive on the scene!

What I find strange is that the Government and the Lottery are putting a hell of a lot of money into the Olympics, that will be watched by considerably less people than will watch the World Cup!

I wonder why!

I think that Southampton could quite easily cope with all of the requirements expected from a World Cup Host City. However, it may mean that Portsmouth FC may have to vacate Wellington for that period Linesman!

Neither Portsmouth nor Southampton could be a World Cup venue without the help and co-operation of other cities.

Countries would need their own hotel accommodation, not sharing.
Their own training facilities, not sharing and there would not be enough hotels in any one city to cope with the visitors both from home and from abroad.

When the Government and Lottery can pour so much cash into the Olympics, the question has to be asked why they are not doing the same for the World Cup.

The Olympics are no longer restricted to amateur sportsmen, so that excuse cannot be used and the tv audience for the world cup would be bigger than that for the olympics!

One is the sport of toffs and the other the working man's sport!

First and foremost this is great news because it shows the guy is here for the long term.
Secondly, with regards to the projected costs of extending the stadium, I believe Cortese/Liebherr would gladly cover them, as they would recoup the money through global advertising of products, including the "family" businesses. They could even insist on any company involved in the extension using Liebherr vehicles and film it as part of the advertising campaign.
This is a win - win situation for Southampton FC and the city.

But is it just me or are all Portsmouth's 'attractions' that you mention all things that us from the nice end of the M27 used to get dragged to on school trips and find really, really boring? Seriously, no one enjoys HMS Victory and the Mary Rose is the biggest load of cack put on display to the public outside of Fratton Park. What else have you got? Some brass rubbings?

Porchester Castle was OK ... always a real risk that someone would fall down the stairs, which added to the excitement of the day.

And it's in better condition than the local football ground, and gets more visitors.

Forget that Southampton was a Roman fort.
Add to that the oak for ships like the Victory was harvested on the western side of Southampton and alot of the ships built at Bucklers hard.
Forget that it boasts one of the largest shopping Malls in europe.
Forget that it has the only decent sports arena this side of london. Which was designed to be raised to take 43000 if necessary and can even be re/structured to take 53000.

Went to the O2 on sunday to watch the APT tennis finals. Getting in and out of the O2 was a complete nightmare - just hope the authorities sort out the transport problems ahead of the Olympics or they will be dead in the water before they start!!!
SMS has hosted an England International and did a good job and Southampton is more than capable of hosting World Cup matches - what a great opportunity for football fans to see international teams playing at the only decent football ground in the south of the country outside London. Go for it.

I showed some pictures of Portsmouth to my Afghan staff the other day and they asked me what part of Kabul it was!

BBC say 15 citys expected to try and get it, come on Southampton make us proud.

I'm a bit disappointed with your negativity Alicesdad, Champions League only twice.

Linesman, i'm pretty sure there would not be a shortage of training grounds in and around Southampton. As far as hotels is concerned, again Southampton is not that small and when you take all surrounding areas there would be no problem hosting players and fans from different countries. Its not as if England is so big that a neighbouring town or city is thousands of miles away!!

In response to the question "why should the council pay?", because the city will benefit MASSIVELY in terms of increased tourism and trade during the world cup which all adds to the revenue they would get back as a result. Aswell as the increased status and improvement to the city that will benefit EVERYONE here. All the many thousands of visitors will need to eat places, stay somewhere, do a bit of shopping in our humungous shopping mall and generally pump millions into our economy.
The bid would not be and expense, it would be an INVESTMENT into the city.

I'm all for the bid if we are allowed to enter one.

Further, there's nothing much wrong with Southampton some professional publicity couldn't fix - the medieval walls are two-thirds extant, and we've three magnificent gateways, which is more than the rest of the medieval towns in this country can put together. And, as mentioned above, it's green, friendly and has lots of other things going for it.
All we lack is the application of imagination and gumption by the City Council and the local media. It would make a world of difference.

The 2010 World Cup is expected to increase the South African GDP by R55billion. Surely Southampton would welcome a similar slice of the equivalent in Sterling in 2018?

Of course I have a short attention span - I'm a product of the soundbite culture and we're the future. In case you didn't know, anyone under 35 finds old ships and old wars really, really boring. But boring is better than the rest of Portsmouth, which is just a bit depressing.

Counciller Mike Hanckock opposed the bid as he thought it was a waste of taxpayers money and said that it could be spent more effectivly in impoverished parts of Portsmouth.

The Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Southampton! - The Mayflower was on the point of doing a 'Titanic' so had to call into Plymouth to be made seaworthy, which is why, where they landed in America is called Plymouth Rock and not Southampton Rock!

Bucklers Hard is in the New Forest, not Southampton!
It has one of the biggest shopping malls in Europe, and Solent Village and Above Bar have suffered as a result!
It has a football ground built on the old gasworks site, that is poorly situated to reach either by public transport or by car. It could be extended, but there has never been the need with attendances at the 20,000 mark.
The City has a good airport? Situated in the borough of Eastleigh, and was always known as Eastleigh Airport!
Good rail links? Southampton Central. Hardly sited in the centre of town!
Good road links? Listen to the traffic reports on Radio Solent any morning!
It has numerous hotels and guest houses! Yep! Derby Road! By the hour!

There are sufficient stadia to meet the 40,000 capacity criteria set by FIFA. We could never sell the expanded ground out except for derby games and the odd fixture against a really big team. Better it goes to London, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Sunderland and Newcastle.

I`m sure there are lots of things to consider, not least the cost of extending SMS. But assuming this project has already been thought about, a successful venue bid can only generate funds which would offset this outlay making it a win win situation.

Although I'm not much of a football fan myself, the prospect of Southampton hosting two world cups during the next decade (the other being the confirmed rugby world cup) is exciting. As I understand it, the costs ought to be at least slightly less than Portsmouth's would have been due to the fact that we have a stadium with the required capacity already (once expanded). Hopefully it's not too late for Southampton to get it!

Apparently PFC were actually bidding to host the Subbuteo World Cup, but FIFA said that Fratton Park was too small to host such an event!

The facilities that Saints have at Marchwood are first class, but those that Pompey use in Stoneham Lane are not, and unless there has been a massive input of cash into the Sports Centre, they are not either. Come the World Cup, all being well, Pompey's planned training ground and facilities would be up and running.
Reading's facilities would also be available as would Brighton's. Four separate facilities, that would be rented for the period of use and all within a reasonable distance.
Although Southampton has first class hotels, teams would not want to be in the same hotel, and probably not in the same town or city, so they also would be spread around, attracting money into that area. Likewise their fans from abroad and those living in this country.

I was pointing out the infrastructure was all in place. You tell me a city that doesn't have traffic problems and traffic jams. We all know the best place for the ground to be built was down by the Airport but it wasn't. yet it has a close rail link. Park and ride schemes would be in place which would eleviate alot of problems.
