Southampton sailor held in Iran

A SOUTHAMPTON man is amongst five British sailors who have been detained by the Iranian navy while sailing from Bahrain to Dubai.

Oliver Smith, 31, has been named as part of the crew sailing from Bahrain to Dubai, the foreign office has confirmed.

The racing yacht - the Kingdom Of Bahrain, owned by Sail Bahrain and crewed by the five Britons was stopped by Iranian naval vessels last Wednesday.

The crew members are still in Iran and are understood to be safe and well. Their families have been informed.

The sailors were heading to Dubai to join the Dubai-Muscat Offshore Sailing Race and the Foreign Office has said the yacht might have “inadvertently” strayed into Iranian waters.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband said that officials had contacted their Iranian counterparts as soon as they became aware of the situation.

He explained: "FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) officials immediately contacted the Iranian authorities in London and in Tehran on the evening of November 25, both to seek clarification and to try and resolve the matter swiftly.

"Our ambassador in Tehran has raised the issue with the Iranian foreign ministry and we have discussed the matter with the Iranian embassy in London. I hope this issue will soon be resolved.

"We will remain in close touch with the Iranian authorities, as well as the families."

Iran are typical bullies. They have caused most of the deaths in Iraq, are destabilising governments in places like Bahrain and Lebanon and all the while blame it on Israel and America. One good thing about depleting oil reserves is that eventually despotic regimes in the middle east will have no significance to us- in fact they'll be begging us for water in 20 years time.

As for the sailor, I hope he isn't subjected to wearing an awful suit like those Navy blokes were a few years back.

the time is getting closer when israeli cruise missiles will be "straying into Iranian airspace" on their way to destroying weapons development bases... in the meantime , can idiots please stay away from the national waters of a terrorist state.... just an idea.

At the current time, with the technology now on boats, including GPS which can pinpoint location to within a few feet, I fail to see how the could "inadvertantly stray" into foreign waters.

These are "disputed" waters - ie Iran has unilaterally declared them to be part of Iran, nobody else has agreed to this. The problem is that having humiliated the Royal Navy prevously Iran knows that it can do this with impunity any time it feels like it. Even if there were Navy ships in the area they would be ordered not to interfere by the Foreign Office. Iran must be scared stiff in case David Milliband sends a really cross note telling them off. (He has all the authority of a supply teacher on his first day). The Government are even terrified of Somali pirates now - The navy were ordered to stand by and watch rather than rescue the old couple recently. Result? It's going to happen again and again and again.
