Temperatures forecast to plummet to -5C across Hampshire

HAMPSHIRE is on the brink of being plunged into freezing Arctic weather conditions which will bring snow to the county.

Temperatures are forecast to plummet to -5 degrees Celsius, the coldest the county has seen this year.

And last night a few snowflakes were reported to have fallen in Southampton, Bitterne and Lymington.

It will be colder than Stockholm in Sweden, Reykjavik in Iceland and Anchorage in Alaska, when the weather front sweeps across the county later today.

A Met Office forecaster said: “It has been cold already this week but today will see the start of the really cold weather.

“The cold front is still very much coming our way from the east and it’s going to bring freezing conditions with it.

“Even before it arrives there may well be snowflakes falling over higher ground in Hampshire.

“Ice on the roads is going to be a real problem because there is going to be some pretty sharp frosts.

“The really cold weather will be coming in this afternoon and there will be snow in parts but nothing that’s going to settle.

“Daytime temperatures are going to be about one or two degrees but with a wind-chill factor of about -5.

“At night it will be even colder, and definitely the coldest it’s been this year.

“The good news is it should ease off into the weekend.”

She added it was “very difficult”

to tell whether Hampshire could look forward to a white Christmas.

Bosses at Hampshire County Council reassured drivers that the county’s salt supplies were fully stocked.

Councillor Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Environment said: “We actively monitor salt stocks and we also carry out regular checks at depots, so I am confident we can deal with any long periods of freezing weather.”

It's called 'Winter' & most of us will get through it.

Just check on any elderly relatives.

If its cold like this now, whats it going to be like when winter really sets in next year!?

At least its not like Mongolia... -20 during the day all the way down as far as -31 at night! Nice...

Oh no not winter again! It seems like we have this every year doesn't it!

Does the Government not have a department for this? Surely it must be against some politically correct rule?

After all normally this nanny state would either ban it, change it or tax us on it but not a word from Mr Brown.

As an old un' we have had experience with ALL sorts of weather. We have gone to work with ice covering the road, not snow, ice. Buses slid against kerbs, we went down sideways on a slight hill; walked in the most beautiful snow clad evening on Xmas Eve to the pub; New Years Eve at Rhinefield House and after 12am travelled through Rhodedendron Walk with the animals, hares, rabbits, deer and moonlight - Yes memories and this was over 50 years ago - climate change? I have not noticed any difference. BUT I would say that when one concretes over, take down trees, alter water courses, in fact change the whole ecology of this Country - then we will have floods - how stupid are the people running this Country?

The snow is falling steadily here. I can just imagine how excited the school children must be!
I hope it settles so that there will be some snow play later : )
I hope that in this Nanny state of "health and safety" that the children are allowed into the playground when it's snowing and not kept inside!

Arctic conditions!! Oh please!! -5 is nothing compared to in the -20s with a windchill making it feel more like in the -30s which you get in southern Canada where I spent 20 years. You feel your nose hairs freezing up when you breathe in and there's mounds of snow. So this is warm in comparison!!

Lazy journalism again, Echo. 5 day forecast for Anchorage, Alaska is far colder than we are expecting, ranging from a daytime high on Thursday of -19 to a balmy -9 daytime Sunday. Check your information on BBC weather first to get it right please.

Oh, and Stockholm will be colder than here over the next 5 days as one would expect if we have weather coming from the east. Only Rekjavik will be slightly milder. Where do you get your information from?

Obviously someone has a bee in their bonnet about the weather (above) lol.

Nooooooo snow before term finishes please! Snow means cancellation of school transport, closure of schools, chaos reigns because yes the UK still can't cope with a bit of snow! Fingers crossed!
