Eastleigh civic chiefs to force closure of Leigh Ballroom

“A LITTLE piece of history has just gone down the drain.”

That’s the view of the couple who run the Leigh Ballroom destined to be turned into a youth centre by council bosses.

Husband and wife team Robert and Linda Bellinger have been dancing together since they were infants and between them have 100 years of experience.

In their younger days the duo competed in competitions, winning countless accolades before concentrating on teaching at the Eastleigh venue.

Under their watchful eye many champions and talented dancers honed their craft, notably Karen Hardy, who won Strictly Come Dancing with her then partner cricketer Mark Ramprakash, and Hampshire dancers James Prouton and Claire Taplin.

However, the proud parents believe one of their best students is daughter Lisa Ivanets who, with her husband Alexi, are Latin American champions for the UK.

Linda, 56, says she believes the couple’s success is the reason the historic ballroom draws people in from all over the country.

She said: “I think a lot of people come here just to see them dance and then get involved from there.

“There will never be another place like this, that’s for sure.

“Lots of people have been writing letters to the council but it seems they have made up their minds.”

She added more than 300 people pass through their doors each week.

Robert, 57, echoed these sentiments and added: “We have been pushed out.

“It is very sad, it is a family place and we hold all kinds of events here.”

He went on to say how they attract people of all ages having diverse events from street dance and kids’ parties to traditional ballroom and tea dances.

The couple have been using the centre for years before leasing it from Eastleigh Borough Council for more than 20 years.

Over the decades the building has had many roles – from a roller skating ring, a drill hall, a medical base and a dance venue.

The hall has been used for dancing in some form for at least 99 years.

The council said its new role of youth centre will start in January and will involve a £680,000 revamp as well as setting up pool tables, Internet services and laying on counselling and careers advice.

Council bosses say the town has been crying out for a youth centre for years.

The Southampton couple vow to keep running dance classes even if the have to rent a hall or buy somewhere new.

Quote " The town has been crying out for a youth centre for years ". Why the hell then was the Nightingale Centre pulled down a few years ago????? It was originally called Eastleigh Youth Centre.

£680,000 revamp? What a waste of money. The local 'yuffs' will soon tire of it and then the damage will start and we're left with an ongoing additional expense.
What's that dance: 'One step forward, two steps back'?

I helped with a youth club in Bitterne run out of the church hall. Totally voluntary it reached out to over 100 kids a week. Later I worked in the paid sector and the results were risable. Councils should waste less money on youth work by handing it over to voluntary groups who know the local areas rather than organisations who pay staff and are left with little money to provide decent services.

The Council should be ashamed, as Condor Man said, this will be a waste of money, abused and unappreciated and then probably close at more expense to us. But I don't suppose they're interested in the peoples opinion, it's obviously something they want for some reason and that's that!
Remember the Golf Course?
The goog news is that in a couple of years we'll have some more flats!

Blame those that keep returning lib dems to the council. They have no respect for those they are supposed to represent.

I grew up in beastleigh and remember this building before Robert and Linda Bellinger moved into it and it was a complete wreck.... they have made the building what it is now and deserve to stay, it is also very well used so how can they be kicked out?
There must be better places for a youth center than the middle of town!

A youth club eh? what was wrong with the youth club in Nightingale Avenue when Ted Naseby and the two Colins ran it (assisted by Colin's wife Dot). It had recovered from the terrible reputation in the 60's and made a huge difference to youngsters lives in the 70's. That declined because of poor funding and a general lack of interest. Now the council want to resurrect a youth centre but at the expense of an established dance facility. Someone has not done their homework properly!

How long was that art gallery that all the lottery money went into stood empty. The council could have used that. What happened to the teenage drop in center that was opened in High Street.I'm sorry but local government trying to run youth projects just don't work. Why do scouts, guides and cadets run and get supported so well? The people involved want to do it and it's voluntary. Not on a paid salary when you have targets to meet. Thanks Eastleigh more money wasted and a popular facility gone.

I thought McDonalds in the Swan Centre was the local youth centre?

I am quite amazed at Eastleigh Councils decision to close leigh ballroom. When I lived in Eastleigh they turned the old town hall and library into The Point which was supposed to be a theatre and youth centre. Nightingale Youth Centre has been pulled down but there is a Community Centre Centre nearby which the Senators D&BC manage and is used for a number of youth and community activities. If I remember rightly the council put money into this. I am so disappointed that the council want to lose this world class facility to convert it into a youth club. Surely the council should be exploiting the world wide success of Leigh Ballroom and promoting it as desitnation for dance.

It just goes to show how out of touch the council are with the community. As the previous post says, promote the popularity of ballroom. You would be one up on anything in the area and people would come to the town and do the shops a favour.

The Leigh ballroom caters for every single age group and is extremely popular. Eastleigh council, build your youth club elsewhere!

this is disgraceful! as a world champion dancer since 1984, who has myself taught, coached and encouraged thousands i am appalled at the lack of forsight by the council. on the whole, todays kids get everything without any effort on their part and therefore appreciate nothing, whilst us older citizens get pushed out into the cold for their benefit.this move by the council is highly illegal and smacks of ageism.
