Bus services disrupted by ice

Hampshire bus firm First have updated their list of services after this morning’s network was disrupted by continuing snow and ice.

To combat the effects of the adverse weather bosses are bringing in extra staff to check which services are running early in the morning and have opened their customer service line earlier to deal with queries.

Contact First customer services on 0870 010 6022 The company is also advising passengers to expect delays on many routes and to wrap up warm while waiting for a bus.

General Passenger Advice wrap up warm - bus services may be unavoidably delayed due to the snowy / icy conditions If in doubt, walk to the nearest main road (ie a road that has been gritted); services may be diverted along the clearer main roads if icy conditions prevent buses travelling along smaller roads. For the details of specific service disruptions and diversions check the website.

We expect journey times to be longer than usual, our drivers and controllers are committed to providing the best service possible given the adverse weather conditions expected.

Congratulations to someone. First Bus No 17 has yet again been diverted from along Lower Brownhill Road thus stopping many elderly people that live in Council and other accommodation along that route from being able to go shopping for any essentials and for visiting hospital, doctors surgerys etc. Probably because they have bus passes they are not considered.

Might have something to with the weather? It's hardly a conspiracy against the elderly - get real!

What an ignorant post. So they do it on purpose do they?

Its the same for Thornhill also. Unless you can make it out to the main roads, the whole area is off limits. All the buses are sticking to the main roads. Blame the councils, Forestexbury, if they don't treat the roads then the larger vehicles can't use them.

As a bus driver who has been out driving in these conditions, I can assure you that the company is trying to serve as much of each route as possible, but due to the fact no side roads are being gritted it is still not safe do go down these roads.

That road and many many more on our routes still have patches of ice and it would only take one little incident to cause an accident possibily putting those elderly people you spoke about in danger.

We're not diverting for the fun of it you know, we're just doing it for the safety and the customers and staff! As soon as its safe, they'll send us back down again!

By the way, if anyone wants the most up to date information about the First bus services and you're on Facebook, search for "First Hampshire" and become a fan of that page.

They are giving regular updates about whats going on and whats being changed. You can also ask questions about services, so Forest Exbury you can ask them yourself why they have withdrawn them from that road at the moment and when they are expected to be going back down!

Wonderful comments, wonder why delivery vehicles, council vehicles, mini buses etc., can use it but First Bus cannot. Green Lane isn't gritted either but they can go down there okay. Perhaps there is a difference?

There is a world of difference between driving small vehicles you mention and a 10t bus with up to 80 people on it! Your idiotic whinging of consipracies makes me laugh out loud!

Its nice to know that some buses are running . I live off of Middle Road , and Middle Road, Spring Road, Deacon Road , Ruby Road and all the roads branching off of Middle Road and surrounding areas are like little ice rinks. I have tried to audition for dancing on ice today but I have failed I just cannot stand up on the ice on the pavements. Getting to the local shops in Merryoak to get supplies ie bread, milk , carrot & onion for my dinner forget it...(not my snowman) All this is , by foot - the pavements and roads are just sheets of sheer ice. In the past Middle Road & Spring Road have been cleared so that if you could get there you had a resonable chance of getting to shops in Merryoak or Bitterne or to the local bus stops to get to work. For the past two days I cant go anywhere. The council say that we are not a priority area at all but as I have reminded them what will happen when people run out of food or I surpose that will not be a problem because residents will then fall over trying to negotiate on treacherous pavements and have to be taken to hospital and maybe southampton general will feed them.

If all those who are fit and able each take a shovel and clear a few yards of road/pavement instead of expecting someone else to do it for them, it would make things a lot easier.

If it's not safe to do do we will not drive on roads that are not gritted ..Have you not heard of health and safety???? Elderly are advised to stay in as the pavements are treacherous .
Would you put yourself in a situation were safety is not for most .We drivers are doing the best we can and many passengers are happy to have the service we are providing .Have not had any complaints just gratitude that we are doing the best we can ..

Yes I am extremely grateful, having travelled from the Big Cheese to the City yesterday; lucky to get the number 8 bus that terminated at the Mousehole Lane roundabout. Grateful for any transport I can get. Well done First and BlueLine for organising any services which people can use.

Since so many council staff and councillors who are not at work - surely they could at least clear the pavements and ensure the elderly are OK by delivering the basic foods.

So many people are car drivers that they do not care about the pavements in front of their homes. However, maybe it is Southampton only - other areas I have lived, owners have cleared the pavements in front of their homes. Pointout Road was lethal yesterday - yet not one home owner had bothered to clear the pavements. Yet drivers pouring hot water on their cars to make the situation even worse - total madness.

I am vey grateful to the bus companies that are running . I just cannot walk safley on the pavements to get to use your service on the main road, seeing that the number 8 is not running where I live. I am a car driver , my car is stuck on the bottom of a cul de sac for the last 4 days. If the pavements where gritted I may be able to walk further rather that auditioning for dancing on ice. I am trying to help my mum and elderly neighbours but cant get to the local shops. Spoken to the council - nothing they can do .

If you can't walk on the pavements or drive your car, how can you expect someone else to get there to grit your pavements?! Why do people always expect SOMEBODY to do something - SOMEBODY'S probably too busy!
