EMERGENCY services have been called to a Hampshire pub after hazardous gas was discovered leaking from a walk-in refrigerator.

Fire crews were called to the Kings Head pub in The Square, Wickham just after 1.30pm after a member of staff became unwell after detecting a strange smell in a walk in chiller.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene to treat a member of staff who came into contact with the dangerous chemical, believed to be freon gas.

Five members of staff were treated at the scene by ambulance crews and two of these have been taken to the Queen Alexandra Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Specially trained Haz Mat teams from Hampshire Fire and Rescue are now at the scene investigating the source of the dangerous refrigeration chemical and what caused the leak.

Police closed entry into The Square via Winchester Road for nearly two hours as fire crews evacuated the building.

They are now bringing in special detection equipment into the pub to find the source of the harmful gas.
