FIRE crews last night tackled a blaze in a Southampton home.

Six fire engines were called to Shaftesbury Avenue, Highfield, before 8pm on Tuesday as flames took hold of the end-of-terrace house.

More than 40 firefighters were on the scene.

Part of the road was cordoned off as fire crews wearing breathing apparatus fought the blaze.

Up to 60 neighbours were out on the street watching the drama.

The two-storey house on the corner of Shaftesbury Avenue and Richmond Gardens is believed to have been the home of university students.

The fire appeared to have broken out on the top floor.

There were no reports of any casualties.
