Time’s running out to ensure you get a vote

ONE in ten people in Southampton risk missing out on their chance to vote in the forthcoming general and Local elections, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Official figures show that, with both elections widely expected to take place on May 6, roughly nine per cent of adults eligible to vote in the city have not yet registered.

Today, with just over five weeks before the registration deadline, the man in charge of organising this year’s ballots urges Daily Echo readers who have not yet secured their vote to get in touch with Southampton City Council and do so.

Mark Heath, the city’s electoral registration and returning officer, said: “I would urge all our residents to register to vote in the general and local elections. This is the chance for our residents to make a real difference in their communities, by voting on the issues which will affect them.”

According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, 191,700 residents in Southampton, aged 18 and older, are eligible to register. However, the City Council says only 174,078 people within the city’s boundaries have so far done so.

It means as many as 17,000 adults may still not have registered.

Mr Heath added: “In Southampton we want as many of our residents to vote as possible. However, people must remember that if they are not already registered to vote then they need to do this before April 20. There could be thousands of people in Southampton who are not registered to vote and I want those people to make sure they don’t lose their right to have their say.”

The overall number of people on the register disguises the number of those who are joining and leaving it, or moving in and out of the city. Since December, 996 people have joined the register in Southampton but 970 have left it, the council said.

Boosting registration is driven by efforts to increase voting at the election. Turnout has become a growing concern among officials and politicians, as more people become disillusioned by the parties, or apathetic about taking part.

At the 2005 general election, just 57.5 per cent of people voted in Southampton Test and 55 per cent in South-ampton Itchen. Both were lower than the UK average of 61.4 per cent.

Local elections – when one third of Southampton City Council seats will be up for grabs –- is fixed for May 6. The general election is widely expected to be held on the same day to maximise turnout.

echo recheck your figures "only 57.5 per cent of people voted in southampton test", or is that 57.5 per cent of the people that did register to vote did vote. that would be two different figures.
i have figures that only 52% of those that could have voted did vote in the last general election. and the forecast for this general election is going to be 50% or lower.

Vote Conservative.
Its time for Change.
If you are happy with the status quo, vote Labour and get the same tired Gordon Brown policies which have failed this country for the part 13 years.
PS--Remember--A vote for UKIP or the BNP (or some other nonsense party) is a vote for Labour. Its a two way fight in Southampton Test and Itchen.

james a vote for torys is no different to vote for labour, they are all right wing partys and the only different party out there is the TUSC who are only standing in southampton itchen, in southampton thiers 3 constituencys you for got southampton north & romsey. so a tory win or a labour win there will be no change apart from the faces the policy is of all the right wing partys are the same cuts and more cuts.

Still posting under a different name then...........
.
Such tired policies for thirteen years and you still cant get your Tory party to form a credible opposition....how sad is that. Your only chance is if the Lib Dems side with you....two chances of that ...fat and slim

Considering all three main parties have similar policies on offer it is hardly surprising many people still have not registered to vote.
In Southampton Test few of us who may most reluctantly vote, will mostly be voting on the basis of personalities of the candidates, as opposed to vote for any political party.
As there is hardly any chance of a real socialist candidate, some of us will only be voting for Alan Whitehead because he works hard on the case work of his constituents and is very experienced and intelligent person. So it will be vote for the Tory we know than the inexperienced out of touch and cut crazy local Conservative councillor we don’t know.
As far as New Labour is concerned, its latest back stabbing of Unite members in dispute with BA has proved that what used to be the party of working people has in fact become parasite of trade unions i.e. de facto Thatcherite Tories.

It's not a two way fight at all - the Lib Dems aren't that far behind the Tories in both seats.
Vote Tory and confirm the destruction of this once great country.

I've lived in Test for 2.5 years, the only time I've ever seen Alan Whitehead is in the queue at Waitrose. He does nothing for owner-occupiers just council tenants- his core vote. If you look at the electoral spread in the city Moulton will beat Whitehead and Smith will push Denham close. Tories to also win back Romsey, Winchester and possibly Eastleigh.

he do's very little for council tenants he do's more for the home owners on the private estates like in old redbridge road test lane. he do's not reply to letters phone calls or e-mails. you got go and knock on his door to get any sort of answer if you live on the council estates.
but people will vote him back just because he the lesser of the evils and he knows this.

With your character assassination its a forgone conclusion then that your little mob will do it. I hope that the defeat of Moulton and Smith brings to an end their brief and pitiful politicical career

so what has Alan Whitehead actually done in 13 years as an MP? Come on, justify it? We pay more tax now that we've ever done before and for what? even more debt. As a parent I'm not spoilt for choice of a decent secondary school to send my kids to, decent jobs are hard to come by locally and poorest in society are getting poorer.

Unfortunately, many Cabinet or shadow partys appear to have a 'caught in car lights' stare with a look of 'I'm new to this game'. Like lemmings they throw themselves after their leader and after ruining our Country fall over a cliff.

whitehead has done has much has hill. but what do you expect, lost of decent jobs and the poor getting poorer is all down to right wing politics, and it will not matter who ever gets into power, you have a choice in the test constituency extreme, far right and right wing politics and all any one can do over here is vote for the lesser of the evils whitch is whitehead.

Condor Man, why are you trying to shoot yourself in the foot?
Surely you are aware that schools are run by your favourite Conservative council. How can you pin that on Alan Whitehead or his right of centre party?
Yes by following Thatcherism to keep the Tories happy the New Labour has betrayed good old Labour values, so why are you surprised at the end results of those evil inhuman and nasty policies?
Because Cameron's Conservatives will be even crueller than the Tories in NuLabour clothing, most people will opt for NuLabour. Because typical 'British Left' has spent most of its resources criticising each other rather than picking upon the real enemy, which is on the right, most of us are left with no choice but to vote for lesser of the two evils.
In fairness I must say that as an individual MP Alan Whitehead works very hard for his constituents, most people know that, so the mud upon him being thrown simply will not stick. But obviously that is not going to stop the fans of the self confessed nasty party doing its usual dirty bits, is it?

The Tories are as bad as New Labour. You will be kicking yourself with in 6 months of either Moulton or Smith getting elected or the incompetent Cameron becoming Prime Minister.
Get this, I dont like Brown but I would rather he be set the task of sorting out the mess the bankers have created, under the de-regulated economic freedom they got from the Tories prior to 1997.

Brown created the mess. In 1997 he was left a strong economy by Ken Clarke (arguably the best chancellor this country's ever had). In the first term he stuck to Clarke's spending plans and the economy was in record credit. In the 2nd term he started borrowing and hence the problems we are in now.

the economy had started to collapse in march 1995, it could not sustain the high unemployment that the torys push up in the 80's, all brown done was to hold off what was going to happen any way. all your problems you got today was started by maggie government, and you will not see an improvement till we turn back the clock and get back to what we had pre-1979. right wing policy only works for a very short term, and the down ward trends are much deeper and last very much longer.
