More stories about: Southampton General Hospital
PARKING at Southampton General Hospital has been thrown into more chaos after residents won a five-year battle to be able to park outside their own homes.
Until now patients and staff have left their cars in St James’ Park Road, Vinery Gardens, Vinery Road and St Winifred’s Road to escape long waits and hefty charges in the hospital’s car park.
Now council chiefs have made the roads permit only zones, which are set to come into force this summer.
The move has delighted campaigners who have been fighting for residents only parking since 2005. But it is sure to worsen congestion at the General where people regularly have to queue for up to half an hour to get a space.
Campaigner Linda Haynes, 41, who lives in St James’ Park Road, said: “Good things come to those who wait, you just have to put that fight up and make it happen.”
Neighbour Claire Jordan, 24, who works at the General as a pharmacist, said the hospital should do more.
She said: “There’s not enough parking at the hospital. That’s the problem, that’s why we moved here so we could walk to work.”
Southampton Test MP Alan Whitehead said roads surrounding the General had become a magnet for people wanting to park. He told the Daily Echo: “I think the hospital is now waking up to the problem of parking.
“I believe that a contribution of park and ride, residential parking and more parking spaces on the hospital site will help improve the situation.
“People pay a reasonable amount for good parking facilities but the hospital could do more to help regular hospital visitors with season tickets offering reduced parking rates.”
City transport supremo Councillor Matt Dean said parking around the General had been an issue for a long time. He said: “I represent Shirley and I’m aware that this has been an issue for some years.
“I have been working in this role for two years now and a survey we completed found that 70 per cent of residents wanted a scheme like this.
“I think the answer has to be that residents have to come first although we take into account the need for businesses which we have done.”
Harry Dymond, chairman of patient watchdog Southampton Link, said his organisation, which was set up last year, had already contacted the city council and hospital to find out what is being done to resolve parking problems.
He said: “That can add to the stress of going to hospital.”

Now watch the council see this as a revenue earner, and charge the residents for permits, then see the same people complain. They wanted 'private parking' on a public road so charge 'em

Is it against the law for more than one person to drive in a family?, is it too much to ask to be able to park outside or even in the same street as you live, Its not our fault that YOU choose to drive to work, Its not out fault that YOUR employer does not provied enough parking. If you did have your own parking bay at work Im sure you would kick up a storm If I parked in it!

If the Hospital had not sold most of the Western(CHEST) site for big money to Tesco they between the 2 sites would have had more than adequate space for all departments of the hospital and still have had plenty of room for parking and this problem would have not arisen.
I lived in Dale Road until 1972 and Mother lived there until her death in 2000, we watched the General expand massively, taking over most of Laundry an Tremona Roads and bringing the surrounding areas to a standstill.
Usual shortsited planning and greed,
even our GP used to park in Mothers drive if he had to visit the Hospital

After years of suffering students and Uni staff parking in my road we successfully got permit holder parking last year. As a council tax payer you should be able to park near your own home.

I moved from Shirley to Totton after fighting for a parking place even in the same road for 28 years.
Paying council tax or even road tax entitles you to nothing except the right to use the road. If you want to park near your house buy a house with a driveway

Parking permits do not only limit those that work at the hospital. Like me, motorists that pay road tax should be able to park in the streets of Southampton provided they dont block access etc. Many of these celebrating residents have drive ways they do not use, some are two or three car families and are just another bunch of not in my back yardigans.

Ok so we have a problem with parking!! well sorry but i put the blame not on SGH in full but partly as most of the cars parked are Disabled Blue Badge they get money to help pay for parking or they get a new car with everything paid for yet they wont park in SGH disabled parking bays ok cost is a bit high they should do what QA in cosham do that would help all disabled drivers have it all paid for them and when it comes to carparking they want more which is wrong the car is to get them around YES a disabled bay is for helping THOSE who cant walk park close to the entrence YES but they want more yes DISABLED car drivers want it all FREE when the money in the end comes from Tax payers so if you deal with this problem you will solve it, also get your friends to drop you off at hospital if the app is not for the disabled person let a REAL DISABLED PERSON in a Wheelchair have the space and not you for the wife/hus/person who is not disabled park in the space you have taken.

There are many people that cant afford their own house or flat and house share as a result thesedays. This increases the amount of cars for that property. It isnt nimbyism, its just life. . Secondly, you dont pay road tax. It dont exist. You pay a vehicle tax for the ownership and based on emissions (its a green tax, and an over simplified one at that)... Vehicle excise duty. Its not really anything to do with the roads, thats what you pay council tax, income tax and a little VAT for. . Anyway, I digress. . They live there, why shouldnt they be allowed to park there. Mind you planning applications for a second multi storey for the hospital was said to have been rejected in the 90s becuase locals didnt want it, LOL! . Infact heres a thought.Perhaps we should be erecting smaller multi storey car parks around the city for residents? Theres one or two places they could site them near flats and houses.

St.DaveH wrote:I expect the residents park outside their house and leave their drive free because if they don't, somebody with a big white van will park it there, probably abandoning it for a whole weekend, let alone the hospital commuters. That prevents them having any home visitors who can park within a reasonable distance. I doubt they want to look at a massive commercial vehicle either. Ban vans from residential areas I say. Leave your van at the depot!

Point taken on road tax, but isn’t official name still the road fund license???.and thus makes a vehicle legal for driving or parking use on any public road????St.DaveH wrote: Parking permits do not only limit those that work at the hospital.
