Boat’s safety is called into question

A LIFEBOAT crew has criticised the condition of a boat that broke down with five men aboard after a cross- Solent trip.

The owner of the 11- metre craft has been told to make sure it is seaworthy before attempting another voyage.

The boat was returning from the Isle of Wight when it suffered engine failure in the River Itchen in Southampton.

An RNLI spokesman said both Calshot lifeboats were launched in case there were any casualties in the water.

The boat eventually drifted ashore, allowing the party to disembark and walk home.

However, the owner returned in a small tender to tow his vessel into a safer position and was taken aboard one of the lifeboats suffering from the cold.

Lifeboat coxswain Duncan Christie said; “This boat was not the most seaworthy of vessels.

“I urged the owner to make sure it is in seaworthy condition before setting out again.”

Small motor boats should have a spare outboard engine or a pair of oars in case the main engine dies - simple.
It's fortunate this happened in the relative safety of the River Itchen, and not in the Solent itself.

Support Our Lifeboats.

How many times do you see a plastic bathtub being towed along on a worn out trailer behind a clapped out Citroen and think that the idiot is preparing to go out to sea in it. All boat owners should carry an insurance policy for rescues in a similar way to car owners joining the RAC.

brite i have been supporting the RNLI since i was 15 years old.
the picture makes this boat look bigger than it is, for a 36 footer boat, there is no reason why it could not carried an aux out board engine and a bracket on the back to take a out board motor. or a inflatable boat with an out board motor to control the boat.
there was a time that i was against that all boat owner should have a licence ( some like a car licence but for boats) but i have been changing my mind over the years has i see more and more people take to the water in boats thats are not savvy to boat owner ship on the water.
