COUNCIL chiefs have denied that Wightlink ferries will be used to transport waste across the Solent from the Isle of Wight. Rumours that household rubbish will be shipped from Yarmouth, then trucked to the Marchwood incinerator, were raised at a meeting of Lymington Harbour Commissioners.
The discussion sparked fears that the New Forest would be hit by extra lorry movements. But Mel Kendal, Hampshire County Council’s executive member for environment, said any waste shipped across the Solent would be taken all the way to Marchwood by barge.
The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that it is looking into the possibility of using the £50m rubbish burner. However, a spokesman said waste would be transported to the mainland only if the Island’s unique “gasification plant” broke down.
