Network Rail defend works on same days as Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final

NETWORK Rail has defended its decision to go ahead with planned engineering works on the day Saints head to Wembley.

The works mean trains from Southampton to London Waterloo will take an extra half an hour and has meant South West Trains adding trains and extending carriages.

Fans have been asked to ensure they add extra time on to their journeys if they are travelling by train as a result of the works.

There will be two trains an hour running from Southampton with the additional service travelling up from Bournemouth at 08:25am. Following the game there will also be two trains an hour running from Waterloo to Southampton from 4pm until 7pm.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “Our improvement works are planned 12 to 18 months in advance and prior to this fixture being set.

“As soon as we knew Saints would be playing at Wembley on Sunday 28 March we worked closely with South West Trains to see what could be done to help fans get to London and back as quickly and easily as possible.

“As a result, extra services have been scheduled and all trains will be formed of ten coaches, which is the maximum possible length. We hope Saints fans enjoy their day at Wembley and that their trip home is especially enjoyable.”

A spokesperson for South West Trains said the number of trains they were running was the maximum possible in light of the engineering works.

The spokesperson said: “Football fans travelling to the match are therefore advised to leave extra time for their journey and travel as early as possible.”

I wrote to SWT 3 weeks ago & didnt even get a reply,This is what I wrote in my email showing my concerns.

""""Are you going to lay on extra Trains/Special Trains for Sunday 28th March, reason for me asking is that Southampton FC are playing in a cup Final against Carlisle Utd, Southampton have almost sold 44000 tickets which is more than any one club has taken to Wembley before, Southampton FC have laid on 100 coaches leaving St Marys around 10am which will take around 5000 fans, there will be independent coach companies also laying on a few so possible in total 7500 going by coach, some will drive & majority of fans will use Public Transport i.e. Trains for this, but notice you have a normal Sunday service, also there are Saints fans throughout the South Coast leading up to London & very large number living in the Salisbury/Andover/Ba
singstoke areas.
When Saints went to Cardiff in 2003 for a cup final you laid on extra trains then & when my local side AFC Totton played at Wembley in the FA Vase 2007 it was standing room for most of the journey.
Think come Sunday 28th if there is no extra Trains/Special Trains you will have very very bad overcrowding & possible problems .Is there any chance you could lay on Football Specials Direct to Wembley Central/Park or a station close to Wembley as lower league Clubs manage to do this & you would have no problems filling if kept at a reasonable price.""""

It annoys me considerably that you people out there think the Railways are there for the travelling publics benefit, nothing further from the truth, it's run to keep the bean counters in a job.

The fact that it is fragmented means that the Train Operating Companies and Network Rail just do not get on, and could not organise a booze up in a brewery.

Why they want to spend millions on a high speed link that no one wants, or needs when they are penny pinching on safety issues is also a cause for worry. The oncoming strike is trying to highlight what is proposed, so before you pilory the strikers, get a clear idea of the issues please.
