Church VAT campaign

Churches are being urged to join a campaign calling for VAT refunds on repairs to listed buildings to continue.

Listed churches can reclaim from the Government all of the VAT on the majority of their repair works, but the system, which has been running for a decade, is up for review in March next year.

Cathy Roberts, secretary of the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches, said: “If the scheme ends it will make the situation considerably more difficult for parishes facing extensive repair work.”

Churches are mounting a major effort to keep the scheme.

Places of Worship at The Heritage Alliance (POW Alliance) has joined forces with the Church of England and English Heritage in the campaign.

Mrs Roberts added: “It will be a tough fight to keep it and we all need to fight for it. Please sign the petition on the 10 Downing Street website now and encourage everyone to do the same as quickly as possible.”

regardless of peoples beliefs these buidlings are of important cultural and historical importance. Anything that can be done to protect them is a good thing. Southampton especially lost a lot of historic buildings during the wartime bombings, we need to keep as many as possible.

Stuff the VAT.
Given the recent relevations, and is a very long, and ongoing situation, I think it is time the church brought their house into order regarding the number of child offenders there are in their ranks.
It would appear they know about a number of them, and move them around to hide them, giving the impression it is condoned, rather than involving the police.

You can add to that the destruction of all the graves at St Mary's, this city's mother church, in the early 1950's.
Vandalism on a grand scale.

In the current financial climate, everyone has to take the pain and it's a question of priorities.
As far as I'm concerned, pointless buildings rank with drunken students on noddy degree courses...

how on earth are the 2 related? There have been incidents of child molestation in schools, should they been demolished too? A friend of mine is child protection officer for the Winchester Diocese of the C of E. She certainly runs a tight ship, it's regretable that the RC hasn't been so diligent.

That is the worst, most bigoted piece of dis-association I have read from you.
"runs a tight ship" - it all must be ok then
There is child abuse in all areas of education and religion. Wherever weak adults are put in charge of vulnerable children, the opportunity for problems arise.
And there is no weaker adult than the one who depends on religion for way of life and income. REGARDLESS OF THE RELIGION

I would hardly call my friend weak, she's dealt with incidents where people have been accused of child abuse very seriously- in fact one person ended up in prison for his crime. Had the RC taken action against rogue priests then perhaps they would not be dragged through the mire now. I've worked with children in schools, churches and the wider community. Sadly there will be horrible people out there, it's up to us to vigilant and stop them before they cause real harm.

Apology accepted. Maybe now you will think twice about hijacking a VAT story, to rant about something unrelated.

I never started the rant, I just felt obliged to make a point. Back to the story all buildings of historical importance should be protected. If Wyndham Court can be a grade 2 listed building then other properties need protection.
