Knife drama at Skandia's offices in Southampton

AN investigation has been launched after a horrific knife incident at the offices one of Southampton’s biggest employers.

Shocked office workers at Skandia watched as an employee pulled out a knife and tried to cut his wrists on the street outside.

Emergency services were called by a receptionist who witnessed the incident yesterday afternoon.

An ambulance crew took the man to Southampton General Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.

lol I guess most of us will think that- however- get ready for those that get 'offended' by this throwaway remark.

Maybe 'friends' or 'family' who are deeply upset about the person - or maybe their great great grandfather who did the same outside Ye Olde Bargate back in 1889.

Surprised at Skandia though. Woolies or MFI maybe.......

People who attempt to commit suicide in a public place are usually suffering from mental vulnerabilities at the time. In short, the balance of their minds are disturbed. Possibly this is not so funny as some correspondents on this board seem to suggest. I am glad that the situation did not turn out worse for the person and am also glad that he is now getting the appropriate treatment.

Anybody naturally wishes for a happy outcome- however we do seem to attract a form of 'censorship' in which some people dont like what other people come out with, despite the open nature of any web forum.

Many of us (including me) have had personal links to all manner of 'sad' circumstances but it shouldnt stop me or anybody else (especially strangers) for lightening up.

Think of the fire sales as goods are ditched cheaply to raise money quickly. It's an ill wind that blows no-one any good and as a committed capitalist I think it's incumbent upon me to buy cut price and help the poor souls out. Now which countries did you say have gone in to depression?

Someone tried to commit suicide here and mostly, I've read comments from people taking the mickey, this is a sad reflection of the society that we live in. I hope that he doesn't try to throw himself off The Itchen Bridge, maybe you guys would find that amusing too?

I dont deny that people do tend to make light of unfortunate situations such as tidal waves, earthquakes, martial affairs etc. However, these tend to be shared umongst friends that you know have the same sense of humour. This web site allows for all personalities and we should accomodate everyone.
All that said, I work at Skandia and know the person who felt so sad that they had to do this. So lets just remember this is a real person and wish him better

Good post and I'm sure we all agree with the final sentence.

This or any other website cannot legislate for what might be deemed 'offensive' humour to some- but mere light hearted comments in passing to to others. Very few of us take delight in 'cruel'personal comments and it's quite easy to ignore the banal rubbish that often accompanies any story from certain posters. They often get removed and/or find that they are bounced off this semi-moderated site.

But should we accommodate those who can't spell "accommodate"?

Lighten up yourself, silly person. Lets see how you feel when you are suicidal, make an attempt on your own life and end up in hospital. Yep, not so funny then is it?

Tell me Donny
What do you know about the subject? more than me - or less than me - or less on some aspects and more on others?
2 Points
First, don't assume anything about a fellow human, even if you do know them
Second, Don't get all high and morally superior about a situation which you do not know the facts, but chose to substitute your own life skirmishes into the blank spaces, then have the audacity to take emotional ownership of someone elses plight.

Huh? What suicide attempt? I didn't read anything about suicide. Self-harm, perhaps, the old "cry for help" routine - and luckily he got the help - but surely a supposed expert such as yourself knows that opening your wrists on a busy street in broad daylight is destined to fail as a suicide attempt. Genuine suicide attemps tend to succeed

No probs- this can be the downside of the net when certain comments seem to irk certain others for whatever reason. I'm sure that many of us who read the stories will have some direct or indirect link to the core subject and no doubt have personal experience.

However this shouldnt lead to a kind of 'censorship' where posters are 'told off' or berated for off-colour comments. Most of us just brush it off, ignore the blatant trolls and sick idiots who pop up now and then. Just pity them and leave the numpties alone as they soon disappear up their own orifices from which they spout their fecal matter.

Anyone can set themselves up as an 'expert' in any field and pontificate on any manner of story thread and the comments. Therefore one cannot expect anybody to take it seriously- unless it's obvious by the style, content and manner of writing.

Once again - someone has pointed out that this appears another 'cry for help' by virtue of the act. We all hope that the person gets the help he deserves

seriously people... this is not a funny matter! knowing the person involved makes me very sad.... as it I can personally say this is a person who always shows respect to everyone, is kind and always smiled to everyone....! makes me sad to see that when someone like all of us is vulnerable, everyone likes to laugh and point...as opposed to trying to give support....
Life sometimes can play bad tricks on you and until you go through those moments you will never know how you will react....
all I hope is that the person makes a full recovery and continues to be the same kind and happy person of always....
