FIREFIGHTERS battled a blaze at the old post office in Southampton city centre this morning.
Two crews from St Mary's were called to tackle flames which broke out from a bathroom at the basement flat on the High Street at 4.30am.
The fire was caused by a fault with the electrical shower unit.
Ten firefighters took one hour and a half to put out the fire.
The three occupants, who are aged between 20 and 27, woke up after they heard the smoke alarms.
They managed to get out of the blazing flat and call the fire service shaken but unharmed.
Damage has been caused to the bathroom and there is smoke damage throughout the flat.
Watch manager from St Mary's Nigel Mottashed, said: "The fact they had smoke detectors fitted in the flat, which woke them from a deep sleep at 4.30am, could have saved their lives."
