Boxing commentator Harry Carpenter dies, aged 84

BC boxing commentator Harry Carpenter has died, a spokesman for his family said.

The 84-year-old former TV sports presenter died at King's College Hospital, London, on Saturday.

His lawyer David Wills said: "He had been unwell since last summer when he had a minor heart attack.

"The funeral has not been arranged but will be a family funeral, to be followed by a memorial service in London."

Mr Carpenter leaves a widow and one son.

Carpenter became closely identified with Frank Bruno, whose catchphrase "Know what I mean, 'arry?" featured in their post-fight interviews.

A spokesman for Bruno said he was upset and shocked by the news.

The former heavyweight champion's agent said he was "very upset" at the news.

He said: "When I told him, he said it was 'terrible, sad news'.

"Frank has many acquaintances but not many real friends. Harry Carpenter was a friend."

And did Harry know what Frank Bruno meant? Now we shall never know.

That's a shame he was a friendly kind of chap who was very popular when the big fights used to be on terrestrial TV for all to see. He was always unbiased in his commentary, apart from the time he called out 'Come on Frank!' when Bruno nearly flattened Mike Tyson. Know what mean?

A great boxing/sports commentator, big fights were never the same after he retired and Sky took over coverage of major boxing matches.

R.I.P Arry.

Always remember going to bed before the Bruno/Tyson fight in the late 80's when I was a nipper - waking up and watching it and re-watching it again and again. A great fight made even better by his excited commentary! RIP!

Sorry but I cant stand the sight of seeing 'sportsmen' bashing the brains out of each other with oft-repeated consequences.

I've been to a couple of these boxing nights and watched the twisted vicious faces of the onlookers as they bay for blood in the ring. A display of the sadder side of human nature - mostly males of course.

Cue the pugilist-supporting lobbyists to come wading in with the usual defensive cliches. "Teaches 'em respect" etc lol

I'm with you on this one KM.
Respect to the man but boxing is just barbaric.

I once saw HC at Heathrow coach station. Another proper sports commentator gone, although I don't think I ever heard any commentaries from him. All the classic Eubank v Benn fights were on ITV with Reg Gutteridge.
