It should be worth noting that only around 40-50% (I forget the exact figures, its on the TRL or DFT website I think) of large vehicle and cyclist collisions were the result of filtering cyclists. One poor lady in London for example was overtaken and "hooked" and another was rear ended by a skip lorry.
Cyclists must remember never to go down beside a lorry if there is any chance they are turning.
.
Its not always clear cut and the Police will investigate.
.
I will say that on the various cycle forums there are links to surveys being run by traffic police on this very subject. If all cycle users could google: "Andy Rose
Detective Inspector
Head of Collision Investigation Unit
Alperton Traffic Unit" for the Bikeradar or cyclechat forums they will find links to these surveys.
.
Cyclists will also find advice on how to avoid certain dangers.
.
Lastly I offer my condolences to the man's family.

please dont think when you read this i am putting her at fault as i am not.
I drive a car around southampton and i must say "i am not suprised to read this" As we have had a number of accidents, which sadly ends in the death of the cyclist, sometimes i see it to be the cyclist who was stupid and othertimes the Vehicle, but it was only yesterday I saw a cyclist ride though a red light that i was stopped at so it makes you wonder!! With regards to the post above I don't think now is the time nor the place to start criticising other cyclists behaviour. Whenever I hear of a car accident I don't take the opportunity to point out the number of cars I see run red lights at pedestrian crossings.
Have some tact.
