A NEW safety scheme has been unveiled in Southampton encouraging contractors to take care when digging up roads and pavements in the city.

Eight firms, including BT and Southern Water, have already signed up to this voluntary code of practice.

It aims to encourage contractors to keep residents informed about works, operate in a safe manner and take responsibility for the cleanliness of their site.

Representatives from the Guide Dog Association attended the launch of the initiative to show their support.

Councillor Richard Williams, cabinet member for environment and transport at the city council, said: "We want all contractors to work with us to ensure that the public is not put at risk by work on pavements and the highways.

"The Caring Contractor Scheme is a really good way of making this happen."
