Protestors say no to Sainsbury's

SAY no to Sainsbury’s.

That was the defiant message chanted by more than 100 Hampshire residents protesting at plans for a new superstore in Bishop’s Waltham.

Waving giant placards and blowing vuvuzelas the group handed in a 4,500 petition opposing the 35,000 square ft store to council bosses at Winchester City Council today.

The 60-metre petition was given to the leader of the city council, councillor Kelsie Learney, on the steps of the Guildhall.

What a bunch of idiots, have they not looked at Bishops Waltham? Open your eyes about 40% of the shop are closed or in the process of closing down. Those remaining only cater for a very specific cliental.

Would they be equally vehement if the proposed plan was for a quality German supermarket such as Lydl’s or Aldi, or would they find that even more repugnant?

Perhaps the supermarkets in the surrounding area should refuse to serve the residents of Bishops Waltham, as they are wasting fuel if they drive to other areas when they clearly feel they are fully catered for in their own area!

I bet that if you checked the rubbish bins of the protesters you would find that they do not shop locally, but drive to the nearest supermarket to shop.
Typical NIMBYs.

They chased off the residential developers, if they chase off this scheme it will end up as a waste transfer plant or similar. I bet now they wish they would not have objected for years on end about the residential scheme causing it to go under.

Small towns need supermarkets, look at ASDA and Morrisons in Totton, Sainsburys and Lidl in Shirley Etc.
Its only these companies that attract shoppers to an area, Bishops Waltham get into the 21st century, it could be worse it could be Tesco Town

It's amusing that they are banging on about their local heritage while buying the kids vevuzelas. Wouldn't descant recorders or tambors be more appropriate?

What we really have here is a minority of about 6 or so businesses out of about 30 in Bishops Waltham who fear competition are trying to bulldoze the local community into saying no to the Sainsbury’s proposed supermarket. Aren’t we the customer here? Surely it's our choice in the local and surrounding area, not a hand full of nimby shop keepers.
Has anyone visited the doctors surgery at Bishops Waltham recently? That could certainly be upgraded.
So if the proposal doesn't go ahead, what will we get? Another eye sore of an industrial estate, which it was prior to 2008, or maybe high density housing, which will generate even more traffic that Sainsbury’s would?
Bishops Waltham is not getting smaller, we will eventually need an other alternative which has got to be better that what we have now.
Personally I'll save 500 plus miles driving per year, instead of shopping in Fareham, how many miles driving could be saved looking at all households in the area who currently drive to Fareham or Hedge End? Think of the fuel savings.
Don't believe all the hype you hear about this, think further ahead beyond all the fuss that being made in self interest by a minority. Come on everyone, let's put the interests of the majority first and say a big "YES to Sainsbury’s"
