Hundreds turn out against Sainsbury's plan for Bishop's Waltham

Residents fill Jubilee Hall in Bishop’s Waltham as the parish council makes its objection to supermarket giant’s plans. Residents fill Jubilee Hall in Bishop’s Waltham as the parish council makes its objection to supermarket giant’s plans.

FOUR hundred residents crammed into a public meeting last night to see a supermarket giant receive a bitter blow in its battle to bring a controversial new store to Hampshire.

There was standing room only as councillors rejected Sainsbury’s plans for a new shop in Bishop’s Waltham.

A heated hour-long public debate in the Jubilee Hall saw both supporters and campaigners air their views on proposals for the Abbey Mill site as the public applauded, booed and occasionally heckled the speakers.

A policeman was on standby during the meeting, which ended with Bishop’s Waltham Parish Council voting for an overall objection to the plans.

The council’s decision, which is not binding, will be passed to planning chiefs at Winchester City Council, who are currently considering the application.

Councillors said 1,015 letters have been written opposing the plans, compared to 21 supporting the supermarket giant’s bid.

Peter Atkinson, a local fishmonger, said: “It will adversely affect the diversity of this town.”

Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery, who was away on holiday, made his views through his parliamentary researcher and said the town would “die a slow and painful death” if Sainsbury’s were to open.

But many residents argued in favour of bringing Sainsbury’s to Bishop’s Waltham. Gordon Campbell said: “There is not anybody that supports local shops more than me. I believe Sainsbury’s will be good for the town.”

One resident reduced the crowd to laughter after demanding Sainsbury’s build the new doctor’s surgery and then “get out of the way”.

Bishop’s Waltham surgery manager Andy Moulam said the current surgery has a patient-to-doctor ratio above the national average and currently has nowhere to put the extra GPs it needs.

He said: “It’s for those reasons the practice approached Sainsbury’s to see if they could do something to help.”

A major campaign has been launched to stop the store, backed by Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden, who grew up in the town.

More than 100 members of the Bishop’s Waltham Action Group last month handed in a 4,500-signature petition to council bosses.

But another action group, Bishop’s Waltham Another View, claim the store will bring more employment and offer residents a cheaper alternative to expensive High Street shops.

Objections to the planning application ended yesterday.

Planning chiefs will now have to decide whether to approve the 35,000 sq ft store, which would bring 350 jobs.

It's about time somebody stood up against the big 4. Just look at the huge profits and, I mean HUGE that they make at our expense! Unfortunately they probably won't win as the share holders have more power and only want to add to their overseas bank accounts. They don't give a wobbly trolly about the likes of us! Good luck though.

If it does not get planning I would not mind betting it comes up for open storage then residents will have problems with lorries.
Or even maybe as something more anti social.

They did not want housing , they don't want a supermarket. Residents may regret this when it becomes a waste transfer plant (or similar) as every other use has been exhausted due to complaints.

Watch the developers for anti social uses line up to jump on this if it get refused and turned down at any subsequent appeal.

I'm broke. Me and the missus just did our week's shopping at Sainsburys. Would 20 cans of baked beans be acceptable instead of cash?

I wonder what the protesters' attitude would be if Supermarkets were able to identify them and banned them from their stores.
My betting is that they would start another protest movement!

Interestingly, there were actually quite a few nodding heads in agreement in the hall while the pro Sainsbury's group were having their say. As well as on several points some distinct applause. Maybe there are some cracks appearing in the "Anti" group? How about some choice for elderly low income earners who don't have a car, and can't possibly manage to get a weekly shop on and off a bus?
300 more jobs wouldn't do any harm to the town, are the nimby shopkeepers going to increase employment prospects for the town? Doesn't look like that will happen does it?
Shop keepers regularly invite French and Farmers markets to the town, Sainsbury's would provide much more business to the High Street shops if only a small portion of visitors to Sainsbury's visited the High Street.
Seventy new homes with an average of 1.5 cars per house, would create much more traffic in peak times compared to the Sainsbury's store.
How many lorries would there be if the site resumes as an industrial estate. I bet English Heritage would object to that.
English Heritage have said in writing that they will NOT object to the Sainsbury's store!
The worst option in my opinion is that the half dozen shopkeepers who are behind the "Anti" protest get their way, and the community throws the project into the "Too hard basket" we keep the site how it looks now for goodness knows how long. And the town's aging doctors surgery collapses due to retiring doctors and too many patients, and no new doctors to replace them. If it gets rejected, and as a result no doctors surgery, all I can say is; look out don't get sick!
