Giant tomato from Chandler’s Ford garden

IT is a 15-inch whopper that makes even a beef tomato look inadequate.

But this huge fruit is what gardening enthusiasts Antonio and Elisa Martone have grown in their Hampshire back garden.

The couple, originally from Italy, who are both 78 could not believe their eyes when they picked this massive tomato from the vine at their garden in Pennine Way, Chandler’s Ford, weighing more than one pound.

Now the pair, who are from Naples but moved to Hampshire almost 50 years ago, say they will make tomato puree from the giant fruit to enjoy in dozens of Elisa’s Italian dishes.

Antonio said: “I have never seen a tomato like this in my entire life. I am very very happy. It is fantastico!”

Are they both holding that tomato or has he got a really long left arm ???

By the way that looks remarkably like a pumpkin that has been painted with shiny red paint.

got a tomato that,s 14cm at its widest point, and 9cm deep.
echo take a look at the picture and then get a ruler out 15 inches would make that tomato the size about from finger tip to elbow, did you make an error and mean cm and not inches.

15inches round would fit in just the palm of one hand and not two.
the one in my garden is 12 and half inches round (31cm), 5 and half inches (14cm) at is widest point, 3 and half inches deep (9cm) and its still growing. both stake and beef tomato's can get much larger than this.
