Dog facing death over attack on girl in pub

Aaron Clifford with his dog Reggie. The animal faces being put to sleep after biting a girl at the Haywain pub
A DOG is facing the death sentence after savaging a three-year-old girl in a pub.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback cross sank its teeth into the little girl’s shoulder and lifted her off her feet in front of horrified families.
It then pinned her to the ground for several seconds before being pulled away by its owner.
The victim was taken to Southampton General Hospital and given a general anaesthetic before being treated for puncture wounds to her arm and shoulder.
Rachel Lile, prosecuting, told New Forest magistrates that the girl was likely to be scarred for life following the attack, which occurred at the Haywain pub in Cadnam on August 16.
The animal’s owner, Aaron Clifford, 21, of Calmore Drive, Totton, admitted allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place.
He was warned that he could be jailed and the dog destroyed when he is sentenced on November 11.
The court heard that the animal had growled at another child on the same day as the incident involving the girl and snapped at a four-year-old boy last year.
But Clifford last night begged magistrates to spare Reggie’s life, saying that he was normally a docile dog and had never bitten anyone before.
Since the incident the dog now wears a muzzle and has been neutered.
“My girlfriend and I had been for a walk and stopped off at the pub on the way home,” said Clifford.
“Reggie was tied to a picnic bench away from everyone else but suddenly jumped up when a child ran past. We called the ambulance ourselves and put the dog in the car.”
Clifford said that the two-year-old animal might have been affected by the exceptionally hot weather.
He added that the child could have accidentally stepped on the dog’s tail, which had been caught in a door, causing a painful injury.
“I’m very upset about the girl but this was a one-off. Reggie didn’t eat for two weeks – he knew he’d done wrong.
“I never meant it to happen and didn’t see it coming. I only pleaded guilty because he did actually bite someone.”
Urging the magistrates not to issue a destruction order, he said: “He means the world to me and I’d be distraught if he had to be put down. He’s my little boy – I don’t care how big he is.
“All my mates have children and he’s fine with them. I just hope the court decides to give him another chance.”

The Courts should start putting children down and not the dogs!
No doubt the dog was simply defending itself, but that is just my opinion.
Best of luck Reggie!

These dogs are renowned for being highly strung and should be muzzled in public, they are merely status symbols to young people who like to look "hard".

Never bitten anyone before - so we have to wait until he does it again before we start protecting small children ? Or perhaps a few of them, just in case they stepped on his tail.
Any dog which did this to my kids would be dispatched - quickly and painlessly of course to avoid distress to the animal.

people should keep their kids under control if you ask me. i've had kids as young as three upset my labrador. they pull his tail and his ears and what to do the parents do? sit there and do nothing and it's me who has to push the kid away from my dog.

It's a hard one to blame. The owner because it's his dog, or the parents for not keeping an eye on their kid. I gotta go for the stupid parents if the dog was tied up away from everyone!

One thing i do notice as a dog owner these days, is that kids do just come running up to my dog.I was always told as a child not to approach strange dogs as i could get bitten. It does seem that this dog should of been muzzled from the outset.Must of been a scary thing for the parents. At the same time how many of us have seen kids running round in public places completely out of control and sight of the parents?

There is an awful lot of misunderstanding about this dog actions. Does anyone know what the child did to get bitten? I don't think that it's just the dog at fault.
I hope that common sense prevails. Good luck to Aaron & Reggie

When will parents wake up to the responsibility of parenthood? Anyone who knows this pub will know that to allow a 3 year old to run around outside is totally irresponsible. It is situated on a junction with little pavement.
I am in no way a dog lover, never owned one and never will. But we have become a society of blaming everyone but ourselves.
Put yourself in the dogs shoes for a second, imagine someone running at you, a humans natural defence is to defend themselves or at least go into defensive mode. A dog can't talk (obviously) so it growls as a warning, if you don't listen then you suffer the consequences. They are very similar to humans.
The dog was tied to a bench/table, the owner done no wrong on this occasion UNLESS ALL dogs should be muzzled?
Maybe the children should be kept on leashes instead.
Only last week whilst shopping some brat ran into my trolley, the mother had the cheek to tell me to look where I was going! The world doesn't revolve around kids!

It's quite simply. Dog bites child, dog dies, dead head owner goes to jail. I own a large dog, if it was ever to attact a child it would never see the sun set. There are far to many dead heads with status dogs which they have no understanding off or ability to control

As a parent of a 4,1/2yr old girl & the owner of 2 dogs one being a rottie/staffie cross I have to be responsible on all counts. Children no matter how well they've been brought up will always run up to dogs...I get it every day & parents just don't seem to take any notice of them. Thankfully mine are very good & I always make sure they're on a lead if children are around-but you should never trust any dog big or small. I have told my daughter if she wishes to stroke a dog she must always ask the owner first. I think in this day & age EVERYONE should take responsibility!

Much like animals can only judge people based on what they see running at them and react to the situation.
I don't look down my nose at people but I do get fed up with this blame culture. I also get really angry at parents who use fowl language when it is not called for.

Ban ALL dogs from pub gardens for a start, any dog off a leash on public land should be removed from the owner and the owner fined.
Dogs can be kept on leads and exercised perfectly well, take responsability if you own a dog you own a potential killer.

If a dog attacked my little girl i would be the one in court for killing the dog and its owner, this has got to stop, every chav wants a big aggressive dog to look hard with. I don't know the owner, but it seems he has taken every measure possible to prevent this happening, can the same be said for the childs parents?
I will be the first to admit that when I see a dog I move away as I don't like them, but it's experience that has led me to behave this way. I was bitten as a child but I blamed myself not the dog. Mind, I did put my foot in it's face, so I guess I asked for it!

Children should be kept on a leash (I believe they're called reins) whilst in an open area so as the parents can keep a close eye on them. They even do extendable ones now like they do for dogs.
Life is life, wether it be an animal or human. I guess it's far easier to blame an animal as they can't talk to a judge!
On this planet we are all equal, humans just 'believe' they're superior!

Dog owners are responsible for their dogs.
Parents are responsible for their small children.
How either dogs or small children behave in public is down to the respective dog owner or the parents of the small child. So, neither the dog nor the small child can in anyway be at fault. Blame rests squarely with the adults, not the dog nor the small child.
In the article's reporting of events the balance of responsibility seems to weigh towards the dog owner and not the parents of the small child.
If the Echo's facts are accurate then it is the dog owner who must shoulder the blame for the small child getting hurt and if the eventual outcome is the sad demise of the dog, then it is the dog owner who will also responsible for that happening.

Reggie's breed is not on the dangerous dogs register and if anyone cares to spend some time looking into this breed of dog will find they make fantastic family pets. From ALL the information i have read on this case, supported by comments made in court, Reggie was with his owners on a lead which was tied to the picnic table where the owners were sitting whilst eating their dinner. Reggie was also eating his dinner with his back against the family involved. The owner of Reggie advised a family who's little girls was running around unsupervised( age 3) to make sure she does not try to pet the dog whilst he is eating, from the information i have read this was ignored by the child's family allowing her to run free, as i say without supervision. The information i have read is that the child ran up to Reggie from behind him making lots of noise (as any 3 year old does) Reggie would not have known this was a child, as far as Reggie was concerned he was protecting his food as any dog would. He turned his head biting the child (ONE BITE NOT SAVAGED) as reported, the child's father pulled the child away (understandably) which resulted in the wound's being much worse. I would also like to add that the case was heard in court on 15th October NOT Friday 22nd October as reported by "Chris Yandall" (please see my first statement about reporters not always publishing the truth.
To the knowledge i have by looking into this case the owner of Reggie did everything he could to prevent this terrible accident from happening, why do some parents think they have to hand over responsibility of their children to members of the public when it comes to their welbeing, no doubt this accident would not of happened if they had taken full responsibility of the little girl, its not as though Reggie ran chase after her as he was tied up by his lead to the table with his owner, on what i have read to be "no more than a metre"
This of course has been a terrible thing for the little girl which as i have already mentioned would not of happened if the appropriate parenting was at hand. Of course i hope any emotional and physical scars deminish for the little girl and hope she is kept safe in the future and HER parents DO NOT allow history to repeat itself, i would also like to add that no doubt Reggie's owner also has emotional scars from what has happened, i also read that the owner handed his mobile phone to the parents to call an ambulance, stayed with the family until the emergency service left. The owner called the child's family several times to see how the child was doing, does this sound like a young man without feeling "NO IT DOESNT".
I would like to conclude that Reggies was doing no more than eating his dinner, protecting his food, as any dog would do, WHY SHOULD REGGIE BE PUT TO DEATH???????????????

I fully accept it's easy to blame an animal as they are unable to defend themselves.
On this occasion the child should NOT have been running around, if the dog hadn't bitten the child a car would have hit it.

As a responsible parent it is our duty to protect our children. In the first place Children should not be in a Public House or anywhere that sells alcohol on-licence. Not because I am mean but because these days you cannot guarantee the behaviour of others, wether that be human or animal.
Responsible parents would be best of spending quality time with children rather than palming them off in a play pen whilst they have a beer!

It has done what has wolves been trained not to do over generations.
Feel sorry for the dog if you must, but blame the owner and kill the dog.
As for publicly attacking a mum who has just had her 3 year old mauled..it’s a bit sick don’t you think?
I don’t think spelling would be the first thing on her mind…do you?

Kill the dog, the owners to blame. No matter how intelligent a dog is it is incapable of remorse, it will not learn “the hard way” I like dogs, but I understand that a dog is a dog. They don’t wear bow-ties and play snooker. The owner needs to be banned from keeping dogs. If kids were pestering the dog he should have removed it from the situation.
Your comment is bizarre as it’s stupid

The child suffered a bite on the shoulder, don't make up a story that doesn't exist.
If someone ran at you what would your reaction be? A human can say 'Go Away' an animal can't!
If a spoilt child ran at me I'd be tempted to bite too these days, I hasted to add tempted!

I do feel sorry for the mother of the girl (and of course the girl herself) - some of the comments on here towards her are despicable: I don't care whether or not she can spell - it's irrelevant! Her daughter has just been mauled by a dog and everyone should be sympathetic towards that. I also find it hard to see how such venom towards the child and the parent can possibly be justified, since we know very few facts about the circumstances; and the child is 3 - how can it be to blame??!
There should be a couple of blanket rules that all dogs capable of more than a certain bite strength wear a muzzle when not at home, and that ALL dogs should always be kept on a lead when out and about, with significant fines for anyone breaching them. It's just common sense in my mind... but I suspect there are some dog-loving, people-hating socio-paths who would be horrified at such a suggestion.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. IF YOU WANT TO OWN A DOG, YOU SHOULD PASS A SUITABILITY AND APPROPRIATENESS TEST. Cars, guns and dogs will kill people, yet I don't have to pass any kind of test to own dogs. THAT, my friends, isn't rocket science.

1. I'm sceptical of your claims to be the mother of the child.
2. Your 4th point. He didn't take a dog that hadn't eaten for 2 weeks to a pub. Read the bloody article, the dog didn't eat for 2 weeks AFTER, that's A-F-T-E-R, AFTER the incident.
3. IF you are the child's parent, it was highly irresponsible of you to allow her to go near a strangers dog. All parents should tell children not to approach another dog unless the owner says it's safe. And the dog was tied up so don't tell us that it went for her. She would have to have got too close or provoked it in some way.
4. As a responsible dog owner myself, I don't let children near him unless their parents say it's fine, because in the past unruly children have hurt my dog unintentionally when petting it. Young children are heavy-handed and don't know their own strength. They can pull a dog's tail or ears without meaning to and the dog feels the need to defend itself, often resulting in the dog lashing out in self-defence.
5. Your spelling, punctuation and overall grammar is f***ing abysmal.

Put the kid and the parents down first. Also, the dog never ate for two weeks after this. Not the owner didn't feed it. Stupid bunch or idiots. Read. English is your first language?

No doubt the dog was simply defending itself, but that is just my opinion.
Best of luck Reggie!
