FOR a quarter of a million pounds, some people might buy a house or even consider a super car.

But for the same sum, you could net the fishing rights on a stretch of the River Itchen Navigation near Winchester.

A section nearly one-mile long called the Brambridge Beat, which is just south of Otterbourne, has come onto the market.

In private hands since 1970, the 1,340-metre stretch is popular with anglers looking for salmon and trout.

Currently stocked by a fishing association, around 250 catches were made on the Brambridge Beat last year.

It included a 15lb salmon, the largest on the stretch for four years, and a 4lb brown trout.

Martin Freeman, a partner at fisheries specialist Fenn Wright, which is handling the sale, is expecting lots of interest.

He said: “This is a remarkable stretch of water offering a wide variety of angling experiences, from the chalk stream fishing of The Top Beat, through the slower, more lakelike conditions of The Middle Beat, to the fast flowing water of The Bottom Beat where sea trout are to be found in deeper pools.

“All in all, something to satisfy practically every fly fisherman and a bit more besides.”
