PLANS for a new school building in Southampton have been given the thumbs up.

Southampton City Council’s planning panel decided unanimously to give the green light for the new build of Oasis Academy Lord's Hill to start at a meeting today.

It will be located next to The Cedar School on Lordshill Recreation Ground. The Academy is currently located on split sites in Fairisle Road and Green Lane following a reorganisation of education in the city.

Responding to news of today’s decision, Cllr Paul Holmes, head of Children’s Services, said: “This is more good news for education in Southampton. The new academy building will help us to deliver the best possible learning experience for the city’s young people.

“We’ve carried out an extensive consultation and the feedback from that has been used to inform the plans that were approved today.

“The quality and pace of our Academies programme demonstrates the importance we place on education in Southampton. We want our children and young people to have the very best facilities we can offer them. The new Academy will provide excellent learning environments for students and staff, as well as providing jobs for local residents and a fantastic resource for the local community.”

we need to get rid of this council and get this stop. they are ignoring the locals over this matter, super state size schools are no good for education or sports.

With the school moving from its present site, what's going to happen to the sports facilities including the swimming pool that's available to the general public ?
I KNOW !!!
They will be closed, the land sold off and 100s of houses built.....Its about time someone thought about how to improve Lordhill, not push more people into an already crowded area, and at the same time taking away the few remaining open areas for the youngsters and local residents to enjoy.

Depends who you mean by locals, as the from everything I have seen the "locals" in Lordshill are behind this project. There have been a number of consultations right from the outset when the Academies were first mooted and a new build on Five Acres met with approval from the local commnity. Those who are against it are from the Nursling area.
.
And if you look at the plans then you will see it is not a super state size school and is planned to hold only 900 students (pretty small when compared to other secondarys).
.
Looks like a very good decision to me. the Academy have improved results massively and hopefully this new build will be another chance to make a sea change for an area that has been poorly served in recent years.

I too would be interested to know what the plans are for the remaining facilites on the old Oaklands site and the old Millbrook site.
.
Would it be possible to keep the sports facilities at both open and available to the general public? I would certainly like to see the swimming pool kept open and I'm sure Millbrook recently had a new sports facility opened.
.
Also, what would be wrong with keeping part of these sites as greenfield and relandscaping them?? I'm sure there will be pressure to build on them (a decent windfall in these austere times), but a mixture of development and recreational space would be nice.
.
Some answers would be nice here.

Millbrook school site is still in use although obviously not as a school. There is a gym which can be used by the general public and you can hire the sports facilities i.e football pitches sports halls etc.

The facilities are basically 'rented' by an outside company who then hire them out.

I have been told by 'people in the know' that it will be up for tender again soon, next year I think. Lets hope the same company retain the tender as it is used by a lot of Youth and Men's football teams aswell as many groups that use the old classrooms.

Also some pupils that need extra help have been going there for one-on-one tuition.

quite a few of the residents of Lordshill have actually been against this, petitions have been organised, meetings arranged with councillors in homes etc and it seems all to no avail. I'm not against building for the future but 20million? as far as we have been made aware the swimming pool in oaklands will stay & the rest of the site will be earmarked for offices or local housing. But according to the council Lordshill is a deprived area so who would actually want to live in an area that is so deprived?? As for the Green Lane site, this will stay as an adult education centre!
