Echo readers show how they would 'pimp their bin'

SOME might say it’s a rubbish idea.

But heaps of artful Daily Echo readers think it’s a bright idea.

Plans are afoot to transform Southampton’s 150,000- strong wheelie bin collection into individual works of art.

The idea, piloted by Southampton City Council, seeks to foster love for our bins.

Already 100 pimped up bins are taking pride of place in the community after workshops invited people to tart up their own.

We asked Daily Echo readers to come up with their own wheelie bin ideas.

Since launching our competition to decorate your wheelie, entries have been piling in from across the age ranges.

• See all the Pimp Your Bin entries.

Ideas include mocking up the bins as a Doctor Who Tardis or depicting night time scenes with scurrying urban foxes.

Others like Carys James, 12, from Harefield, sees her bin being transformed into a “rubbish eating machine”

while Olivia Costello, 11, from North Baddesley has designed hers with a mouth gobbling up rubbish.

Betty Robinson, 85, from Shirley thinks her bin would look magic with her mushroom design.

Christine Adams, 66, believes that you should “love your wheelie” with a red heart decoration.

However, Peter Spindloe, 51, from Golden Grove, thinks that the bins should have “biohazard” emblazed across them.

He has written across the front: “Empty once or week or more often to avoid typhoid, cholera, diphtheria, rats, cockroaches, mice, urban foxes, seagulls, starlings, pigeons, and related faeces – Protective clothing to be worn.”

Under the council plans, to be discussed in the summer, an artist would be employed to help people dream up designs and even introduce themes to each of the city’s neighbourhoods.

Enter the competition

It’s not too late to enter our competition. You can download a wheelie bin to colour in and send it to Patrick Knox, Daily Echo, Test Lane, Redbridge, Southampton, SO16 9JX.

'Pimping' bins is a good idea for the residents of places such as Eastleigh and Millbrook, it could increase the value of property in the area.

Let's hope that by decorating the bins that they don't become targets for the local wheelie bin arsonists.

Most DIY shops sell stick on designs for wheelie bins so why are so few people using them.
After all they are only about a fiver

Because they look TACKY!
(But locals probably think that they look classy in Totton).

Surely the designs will be shortlisted only for a late entry to be received and declared the winner, to the amazement of all.

In the economically challenging times, perhaps we should be selling the space on our weelie bins for adverts... or perhaps having charities given the space for adverts...

"Tory Recovery Plan Think-Tank" perhaps?
Or maybe "One of a set of twelve easy to collect bins sponsored by Dorset Council"
Or "Daily Echo Advanced Recycling" (Saves time and money-only joking)

Sorry to disappoint you.
We don't have wheelie bins in Totton.

The idea of the comment was for people to buy them and save the City Council the time and MONEY with such a pathetic idea.
Why waste tax payers money on an artist employed by the council to show people how to paint.

Do the council own our wheelie bins and if so, in these tough times, why not charge them ground rent for storing them?

Have to say DB I agree with you, I also have 4 children and don't have the time. Fair enough if people want to paint and decorate them it's a nice idea if they do. However, I would point out that children touching bins that haven't been cleaned is not very hygenic(!). I pay to have ours cleaned because I have to due to our circumstances, but I can see it rubbing off quickly if others do this, even with durable paint.

Employing an artist is PURE madness, and SCC we cannot afford it!!! Why can't people do their own and why do they have to be stepford wives and conform to themes!! a handful of Echo readers submitting designs isn't indicative of most Southampton residents. If people want to attend a workshop then run them at the Art House, and let them pay a couple of pounds for doing it and use a community enterprise, rather than employing someone which costs money.

Employing an artist? Councils still don't get it. Your executive pay is outrageous and yet you cut front line services and still have the gall to publish plans to hire an artist for this type of trivia. Don't you think the money would be better spent fixing pot-holes, providing decent care for the elderly, etc.? Of course you will say that those things cost millions but try fixing some small things - a little at a time for a change.

Perhaps if we all put photos of our properties on the bins then the bin-men might be able to get the bins back to us as putting huge house numbers on the bins just doesn't seem to work for some reason ........
I'd rather see elderly people having cheaper meals on wheels than the council wasting money on something like this. (Or should I just be saying, as local councillors must be, "Let them eat cake" .....).
