A LOCAL butcher has become the newest president of the Rotary Club of Basingstoke Deane.
Terry Tarrant, who has been a member of the club for six years, took over the position from former president Alf McCarthy.
Mr Tarrant is the manager of the Manydown Farm Shop, in Worting Road, Basingstoke, and lives on the site.
The 42-year-old was born in London and began working in the meat industry at the age of 14.
He purchased his own business in 1989 and became president of the London South West Butchers Association.
Mr Tarrant moved to Basingstoke 10 years ago and has been instrumental in turning the Manydown Farm Shop into one of the most successful in Hampshire, winning Hampshire Life magazine's Best Butchers in Hampshire award, Best Food Producers in Hampshire award and Best in Hampshire Farm Shop award.
Mr Tarrant and his wife Jan have been married for 22 years and have two sons - Adam, nine, and Lee, eight.
Mrs Tarrant has also taken on the role of president of the Basingstoke Deane Inner Wheel Club, the female counterpart of the Rotary club.
Mr Tarrant said: "Not many clubs have husband-and-wife presidents, but when we found out that we could do it the same year, we thought it would be a good idea."
He added: "I am looking forward to the next year.
"I would like to raise the profile of Rotary by attracting new members and raising money for local charities, while having fun at the same time."
