AN action-packed programme of activities for this year’s Over-50s Festival in Southampton has been unveiled.

The festival, which runs from August 7 to 21, aims to give the city’s older generations the chance to get active and try something new this summer.

The volunteer-led festival supported by Age Concern Southampton and Southampton City Council, which has been running for more than 20 years, will take place all over the city.

Celebrations will kick off with a service at St Mary’s Church on Sunday, August 7 at 3pm where the Reverend Canon Bruce Hartnell will give a sermon on the theme of Help.

Monday, August 8 will see Guildhall Square come to life with performances, community groups, stallholders, and tea and cake from the Age Concern bus.

The following two weeks will see a packed programme of events and activities including the chance to try new sports, tours of St Mary’s Stadium, Solent Sky Museum and Southampton’s historic sites, a Film Noir evening, coach and boat trips, an all-day dance, a vintage make-over session and much more.

Ken Street, of the Over 50s Festival Committee, said: “Over the years the festival has gone from two days to a fortnight. This year we’re really excited to be utilising Guildhall Square and the old Tyrell and Green site in the heart of Southampton’s new cultural quarter.”
